What Was Walden Pond Like

hello y'all this is going to be one of a,few brief videos that I'll be making for,Henry David Thoreau's book Walden and, this video is all about a question that,I get every semester for my students, what did Walden Pond look like when,Henry David Thoreau lived there and what, does it look like now so let's get, started a lot of times students wonder, well gosh where is Concord Massachusetts, where Walden Pond is of course located, and where is Walden in comparison to say,Boston and I always like to show people, that well it's not that far from Boston, and so you can see here I have a little, red arrow it's pointing actually to,Walden Pond itself you can see in,Concord right here where the roast, friend Ralph Waldo Emerson lived there, they know Hawthorne the author of The,Scarlet Letter lived there as well for a,time as well as of course Louisa May,Alcott the author of Little Women you,can see that it's not very far from at,all from Boston and in fact in the roast, time he was able to take a train from,Concord to Boston and be there within a,day what did it look like, where Thoreau built his house this is,what he says he says my house is on the, side of a hill immediately on the edge,of the larger wood in the midst of a,young forest with pitch pines and, hickories and half a dozen rods that's,100 feet from the pond to a chain narrow, footpath led down the hill in my front, yard through the strawberry blackberry,in life everlasting John's wort and, goldenrod shrub oaks and sand cherry, blueberry and ground so it's a lot of,words a lot of herbs and a lot of little, bushes and things like that but it's a,little bit harder to visualize it so,we'll be getting to that just to say if,you look on the right side of your, screen though you'll see a photo here, this is a photo that I actually took on,a recent research trip to Walden Pond, where they have actually built a replica,of Thoreau's house you may notice that I,am not calling it a cabin that's because,Thoreau was very very firm and calling,it a house and so you can see a little, replica hid there and they actually have,a replica of Thoreau himself it's it's,quite remarkable,if you're wondering just how, small this house was you can see it here, the house was torn down not long after, throw ceased living there but, archaeologists actually discovered the, foundation of that house in the early,20th century and so you can see here, that it's very it was very very small, you can see that it's marked out and you,can see where you had a stove here in,the back of the house you can also take,a look and you can see that there was a,footpath this is heading back towards,Concord and you can also see a little, bit of just how green and forested the, land still is I find this picture very, very fascinating it was taken in roughly,1908 this is a Library of Congress, picture taken by the Detroit publishing, company and this is a view from the site,of Thoreau's house looking toward the, pond and so you can see that he was, indeed about 100 feet from the pond you,can see that he's he has indeed to built, his house on the side of a hill looking, down on the pond and so as he read,Walden I really invite you to come back,to this picture and think of what his, view would have been so given that this, was taken in 1908 that's only 50 years,or so after he lived there and so it's,not very hard to imagine his view, looking not at all different from this, one if you're wondering what that pile,of rocks is there in the video that's,actually a mount a mound of sorts in,memory of Thoreau so the story goes, after he died is very very good friend, amos bronson alcott who is the father of,louisa may alcott, came to pay his respects and tossed a,stone near the cabin and so ever since, then everyone who comes by the cabin, finds a stone and leaves it there and so,if you go these days it's quite a big, mountain deep finally this is another, picture that i took from our research, trip and i just wanted to give you a,nice color image of what the pond looks, like today you can see that it is still, very very very well forested very green, the reason for that is actually Don,Henley of the Eagles,in years ago and provided a great amount,of public support and a great amount of,personal funding in order to create a,Walden Pond National Natural Area and, that's why it's so very very well, preserved but you can see that it is,remarkably blue just as Thoreau says, that it is and a remarkably calm and so,it's a beautiful place to go and if you, ever find yourself in Boston I cannot, recommend it enough so that's it for me,for this video I hope you enjoyed it and,you got to learn a little bit about what, does Walden Pond look like thank you, very much

Ink Review: Organics Studio Henry David Thereau Walden Pond Blue

Ink Review: Organics Studio Henry David Thereau Walden Pond Blue

hey everybody Jake here and today where,I take a look at another ink today it's,going to be organic Studio Henry David,Thoreau Walden Pond blue heck of a name,so these are very interesting is from a,very small manufacturer named organic,Studio I'm as far as I know it's really, just one guy,so these inks aren't always in stock on,this one currently is a Goulet it is a,55 milliliter bottle goodness gracious, for thirteen dollars so it's a pretty, good value but the biggest reason these, interests are popular right now is the, shading and the shining it's ridiculous,it's crazy the color change in these, inks so we're going to take a look at it,one thing I'm going to do a little, differently though I'm actually going to,show you the box for this because the, bottle isn't that interesting and I'll,go over it more in a second but the box,has some pretty interesting stuff in,there so it has henry david thoreau, right there yeah he's an author if you, aren't aware I'm so says organic studio, represents the Masters writing series, volume number 14 and made Maryland,my name is ink and then if you want to,pause this and read it you're more than, welcome to but just that something there, about Henry David Thoreau think bottle, size and then the website as well as,some notable books he'd written which is,I think very very cool very plain, cardboard package otherwise it's good to,go look at the ink bottle I'm very tall, very uh someone slim at least very wide, neck for filling from this is great I,got to be honest guys if this were a,glass bottle instead of platicas plastic,if it were glass though this would, probably be my favorite ink bottle of,all time it's like there's no way you're,not gonna get a pen down in there,I don't you got some ink oh I'm a,wonderful but it's great I don't own a,single pen that comes even close to,being too too wide to filter this from,so it's fantastic, let's go take a look at the ink swatch, here so yeah so babe the base color is,this kind of it's a lot more of a green, than a blue does have a slight bluish to,him but it's mostly a green but with a,little bit of shading but the shining, from the red and purple kind of tone, yeah it's amazing and no this ink is not,wet there's also no glitter in this ink, this is just ridiculously reflective for, some reason on just the reddish purple, parts it's crazy I actually haven't seen, any of the shining until I did the eye,dip these cards just to get the best, kind of representation of the ink and, then I'll write above it but until I did, this in there I had never seen I thought,it was wet and I was like gosh it's,taking forever to dry no it's just, that's just how it looks and I'll just, see the back here as well so it's a very, interesting color and here's the right, and you can see there is definitely some,of that blue but a lot of it is that, purplish red it's kind of hard to catch, but it it does show up well yeah you can, kind of see you there very very, interesting color it's crazy this ink is,amazing let's go again to the right, example real quick before I gosh too, much over I'm just I'm really impressed, with this one guys okay as usual we've,got the LA me mm here so see, this is organics studio I'm not writing, all that out I'm just going to put,Walden Pond which is what it's most, commonly known as as far as like in the, fountain thing community I'll do a few, passes here but it's a very very, interesting ink it's super wet I love, that this is I have another one to check, out from the same brand if it's as good,as this this might be my favorite ink, brand of all time this is this is insane, just the oil needs is crazy so I'll go,ahead and kind of bring it up here to,the camera a little bit you can see see,a little better and it's still wet I'll,do a dry time just here in a moment I,just wanted to show you can kind of see,a changing color already,um top you can kind of see it shifting, from the the bluish green to the the, purplish red but it's it's just a,wonderful ink I'm I'm blown away by this, one the one thing I will say the dry, times on this from my experience are, ridiculous so be very careful turning, pages I've gotten this on my desk, several times already just from flipping, over a notebook or something it's it's,not fun but it is a very very nice ink,and I honestly can't recommend this, enough if you're interested in the color, pick this up this one like sets, currently in stock still on Goulet there, are two more the Goulet stocks the,Twilight blue and the nitrogen, those are both currently out of stock, but you may go find them other places, but it's just and now you can see it's,really starting to turn but it's a it's,a an amazing ink,if you wanted to try something in the, vein of emerald of shavar but you don't,want to have glitter in your pan or,anything like that this is the way to go,this this ink is this is impressive I'm,really really really blown away by this, but thanks for tuning in keeping out for, another interview next week it won't be,from this brand but it is a new and, intere

Fallout 4's Hidden Treasures - Walden Pond

Fallout 4's Hidden Treasures - Walden Pond

you,hey it's me GV and welcome to a brand, new edition of fallout 4s hidden, treasures ladies and gentlemen we are, done with far harbour there doesn't seem,to be anything interesting left on that, island so we're returning to fallout 4,and the Commonwealth where there are, quite a few interesting things that we,still have not been to quite a few I,very actually a lot that I've heard, about and read about and yeah we're,going to be exploring them all so we'll,probably be doing that until nuclear, world comes out anyways today's the one, that we are going to be doing is Walden,Pond as suggested by Malcolm extreme,we're going to zoom out and go ahead and, show you where this is if we go to the,North West never eat soggy yes Northwest, here sanctuary and right over here is,going to be Walden Pond I have activated, this location but I have not actually, been inside of it and there's lots of,cool stuff this is going to be a great, great great location so the first thing, that we're going to do is explore the, inside of course it's nighttime and you, can't just wait whenever you want to so,we're going to go ahead and just turn on,the pip-boy light and take a look what,we have we have a novice Locke suitcase,to begin with but yes I already know, some of the notable loot in this, location and it is pretty sweet and I,mean it just it just hits all the main, points as we will see a little bit later,on,let's defuse the makeshift bomb here we,have some pretty warm money let's take a,look at the I've definitely been here, before by the way that's probably why,I've activated this location oh wait no,okay the thing was I streamed this at,one point I was streaming a character, and we came across this location and I,explored it and I remember let's see,we've got a cap stash as well yes this, door is locked I believe oh it's got a,master lock okay so if we open that will, actually go through and here we have a,note to tweeze tweeze if you're reading, this then you're an idiot this is the, last time I tell you we're locking this, door use the entrance in the sewer pipe, next time you forget I'm locking your, ass out permanently Walter so we're,gonna go ahead and take that and we,could go through this door because we,have an unbreakable lockpick and it's,master and that does really,we can open that regardless but we're,going to take that advice and we are, going to go through the sewer pipe, because a very interesting interaction, happens now like I said I have been to,this location before also we have an,automated tour here and welcome to,Walden Pond yeah hello and welcome to,Walden Pond that's it okay let's see in,here we have a winter jacket and jeans, anything else some alcohol looks like, that it's I'm not sure if this is,bugging out or not because the dialogue,is remaining on this screen hopefully, that doesn't stay like that oh no it,looks like it's gonna stay like that, that's not good at all because we want,to hear okay there we go yeah we want to,hear some dialogue coming up in a second, alright so before we go ahead and go,into the sewer entrance oh no it's it's,it's appearing again when I go near it,alright hopefully that fixes itself, because what we actually want to do is,turn off the pip-boy light first of all,and right over here we're gonna start, going into sneak as I've been mentioning,I have done this before so I know what,it entails but I have not shown you guys, and I have not done it on this character, alright,so we're going to be very very very, quiet as we peruse these sewer pipes, over here we have nothing that is closed, off let's continue this way,so this guy made sure he had everything,he needed before starting his camping, trip in that little shack up top,double-check this list and everything, that's why they call it being the road,ah this guy been in trance trance old, things been,I read a book that one,I wish I could read, okay so that's so funny because, basically if you guys didn't know I'll,go ahead and read the little blurb about, this location this is the history this,is a real location in real life, apparently from 18 foot well not, apparently it is I've read about this in,school too from 1845 to 1847 the author, and philosopher Henry David Thoreau, lived in a cabin by the lake during his, stay he investigated the principles of,transcendentalism by living according to,this philosophy he later wrote a book, about his experiences the cabin in which, the row lived is preserved before the,Great War the cabin and the audio tour, associated with it is sponsored by,General Atomics international this may, show an aspect of pre-war society as the, humble message of Thoreau is immediately, contradicted by consumerism and, corporate involvement in every day life, and I'm not really brushed up on this, subject I remember reading about the ROE,and Walden Pond in school basically I,think he went out here and lived in a,cabin by himself and just tried to,transcend by becoming one with nature I,think that's the gist and so it's funny, hearing Raiders dead Raiders well

Orphan Island, by Laurel Snyder (Walden Pond Press/Harper Collins) Chapter 1, read by the author

Orphan Island, by Laurel Snyder (Walden Pond Press/Harper Collins) Chapter 1, read by the author

hey my name is Laurel Snider and I am,the author of many books for children, but today I'm talking about it called, orphan island that is a middle grade, novel and I have had several requests, from people to do a reading of the first, chapter of this book for students who,are out there working from home who were, using this book in school and it seemed,to me well first of all I said yes and,it seemed to me that this is a strange, book in that it's about nine children, who live alone on an island without any, grownups and there's something about the, book that that feels like not not a,quarantine but that feels like an,isolation feels like a bubble and also, the book engages with some questions, about the social contract and what we,owe ourselves and what we owe each other, and so it seemed to me that it might, actually be an interesting book for, people to read right now have you had, kids at home so I thought I would just, make this video public um people have, questions about it or if you want to set,up a chance for your students to do a,Q&A with me I'm delighted to do free, visits of students by zoom I did my,first one today and I went pretty well,so I just want to be a resource if,anybody's interested chapter one Bell, and boat Gini heard the Bell she threw, down her book rose from the stale, comfort of the old brown sofa and, scrambled for the door when she burst, from the cabin into the evening air,Jinny ran along the beach everyone was, running bolting for the coves summoned,by the golden clatter of the Bell so,bright in the dusk eight kids sprinting, from the fire circle or the outdoor, kitchen emerging from their cabins, racing for the Bell and the tallboy, ringing it by the water's edge it was, like this every time the bell rang at,The Cove they lined up breathless and, staring out to sea to watch the boat, come in against the sunset, they stood waiting like uneven fence, posts there was Dean who towered the, side Ginny and now leaned to set the, bell gently back on its hook and little,Sam beside him there was thin Evie, frowning at the lapping water as though,it had done something wrong and oz and,Jack jostling each other,June stood tall and straight at one end,of the line her gaze intent on the sea,and NAT waited patiently beside her a,book clutched in her hands then there, was been just a year below Jenny and, almost exactly her height smiling his, easy smile as he stared out at the water, patiently Dean had been the one to spot, the small green boat appearing through, mist that reached the island cutting, through the white-capped waves Dean had, lifted the bell and rung it to some and,the others Dean had been alone briefly, with the knowledge that it was time, again for a changing Jenny didn't think, that was fair to Dean after all it was,his turn to leave he shouldn't have had,to ring the bell too and stand there on,the beach waiting alone,Jenny edged closer to him now she took, his cold hand and Dean gripped her, fingers tightly laced them with his own,but didn't turn to look down at her he,kept his dark eyes trained on the boat,in the distance so Jenny did the same, she wondered what he was thinking he,seemed strangely calm unsurprised almost, like he'd been waiting for the boat but,his jaws clenched firmly in a handful of,silent minutes the boat slipped into the, cove and nestled it's green prow in the, sand at their bare feet, then came the empty before moment the, strange heartbeat of time when the nine, kids on the shore peered into the boat, before anybody said a word they all, stared at the shivering child staring, back Jenny knew she should be the one to,speak first to reach out a hand and help, the kid onto the island this one would,be hers after all her care Jeannie was, oldest after Dean and would officially, become elder the moment he stepped into, his boat but she couldn't seem to move, her feet she didn't feel ready,Jenny curled her toes into the damp sand, and squeezed Dean's fingers he squeezed, back but then let go,leaving Janie's hand lonely she dropped,it to her side last year there had been,a boy in the boat yellow haired Sam who,now stood on the other side of Dean, sniffling Oh,sniffling Sam had belonged to Dean had, stumbled along after him like a shadow, wherever he went,Sam had shared Dean sleeping cabin and, been always underfoot learning the, island from the tall boy who would be,leaving now so suddenly the new arrival, was a girl of course it was a girl year, her eyes were huge in her face stunned, her chin trembled and her black curls, were damp with sea spray the girl was, pretty but that didn't melt really kids, all look the same sitting in the boat, boy or girl fat or thin dark or light, they look damp lost and snot faced the, salt spraying me their noses from now, everyone was waiting waiting for Ginny,to say something she was taking too long, and she knew it but it was hard to speak, she was frozen in the moment she'd been, dreading for hundreds of sleeps at last, she forced herself forward her feet, stuttered in the sand as she reached one,arm

Walden by Thoreau & A Tour of Walden Pond

Walden by Thoreau & A Tour of Walden Pond

hi everyone welcome back to my channel today  i want to talk to you about my favorite  ,non-fiction book of all times which is Walden  by Henry David Thoreau I've mentioned this book  ,so many times on this channel but i want to go a  little bit deeper and i want to explore as much  ,as i can of Walden i'm hoping you will stick  with me for the entire video because i promise  ,it will be worth it Henry David Thoreau was  actually born three miles away from Walden pond  ,he was born in concord Massachusetts you  can walk from Walden pond to his birthplace  ,within an hour so this region was technically  his childhood home of which he had fond memories  ,he was part of a working-class family his  father worked at a pencil factory and for a  ,while so did thoreau but he really loved the arts  literature poetry and he got educated at harvard  ,it's 5'7 very pale a little bit lanky and a super  introvert and like most introverts they usually  ,um get introduced to the world by being adopted  by an extrovert and throws extrovert was emerson  ,who was an orator and essayist and he also  adopted him into the transcendentalist movement  ,and their friendship is the content and basis  of so many books out there and their friendship  ,is fascinating emerson also lived very close  to walton pond in fact thoreau would often go  ,and have dinner with emerson's mom and emerson  when he would visit like his project for walden  ,pond wasn't that extreme for the most part thoreau  wanted to work out an experiment that he lived out  ,and while he was doing this he kind of wanted to  meditate so when he was 27 years old he decided  ,that he would live alone in walden by the pond he  wanted to start first by building his own house  ,which was a very very tiny house it was like a  cottage he called it a house most people wouldn't  ,but he wanted to build it on his own and in walden  we are taken through his process he tells us how  ,much he spent on the materials how he worked  through it working on building his own house  ,makes him feel more connected to nature because  you know birds build their own nests he moved in  ,on the 4th of july in 1845 and he stayed there for  two years until 1847. he worked on this manuscript  ,for several years refining it taking some things  out adding some stuff in some things are once  ,again either exaggerated or tweaked to the point  where you don't know if it's truth or fiction  ,some records say he might have not eaten the thing  he said he ate on that day people really went to  ,the trouble of fact checking some of the things he  says to the details that they can find from other  ,people's journals or from his own diaries and if  they don't line up they say oh you know shame or  ,exposed but again i don't think that's the point  of walden when it was published on august 9  ,1854 um it was sold at this very tiny bookstore  in boston and did really well people seemed to  ,really enjoy his writing and there was something  about walden and the way was written that was  ,not only him kind of revealing his innermost  thoughts and contemplating about life in nature  ,but it begins by being a critique and a social  commentary on society at large in his first  ,chapter which is economy he looks at how much you  have to pay to just live in a city like boston or  ,how much education costs in and he gives harvard  as an example because of his experience there but  ,i mean if he had to look at what education costs  now he would probably drown himself in walden pond  ,he views his contemporaries as mindless drones  people who lead lives of quiet desperation  ,this is a very famous line i think a part of it  is not only the social commentary it's not the  ,sad part that they live in desperation it's the  quiet that's unsettling it's feeling trapped and  ,having this inability to change your own fate or  to change your life should you want to if you are  ,to contrast the quiet life in desperation to you  know whitman's barbaric yawp where you feel brave  ,and when you're really holding life by the horns  and i think ultimately that's what thoreau wanted  ,for himself he wanted this experiment to be him  living and he uses the word living not only living  ,deliberately but living and life and he uses these  words a million times in the early chapters of  ,introducing us to his work walden now he actually  kind of wrote walden by accident because his  ,intention when he arrived at walton pond was  to write this other book and i'm going to put  ,it on the screen and he did write that but in the  process of meditating on his actual experience and  ,i would say that this is more of a scientific  experiment in many ways you know recording  ,numbers measurements uh collecting data from  how you've planted things outside how they've  ,grown over time it's a very scientific way  of approaching you know a diary or a journal  ,and he realized a year in that he's actually  created something something valuable and  ,t

Examining Friendship at Walden Pond

Examining Friendship at Walden Pond

hi welcome back to another episode of,examining life a life that's worth, living thank you so much for tuning in,today my name is Amanda and today I am,back at Walden Pond at the site where,Henry David Thoreau's cabin used to be I,recently read this book called solid, seasons by Jeffrey Kramer and this book,is about throw and Emerson's friendship,so I definitely recommend this book if,you're interested in learning about, throw an Emerson's friendship and their, views on friendship and inspired by the, book today's question is what is your, idea of a perfect friendship thank you,to everyone who has subscribed so far if,you haven't please click the red, rectangle to subscribe also I'd like to,thank my patrons thank you very much for, your support I greatly appreciate it so,Who am I speaking with my name is,Danielle how would you describe a,perfect friendship I think a perfect, friendship is one where you support one, another but also I hope challenge one, another a little bit encourage growth, and you're there for one another, regardless of what kind of difficulty, you may be facing definitely what has, come up for me recently was the question, was it was a question that was posed to,me what would you were you to a,hypothetical situation where you need to,choose one either in multiple, friendships as many friendships as you, would like strictly platonic or a,romantic relationship for the rest of,your life just one which would you, choose I actually ended up choosing the, romantic relationship because I felt, that while I really value my friendships, actually the reason why I answer the, question I did is while I really value,my friendships and I find them to be,very caring and supportive and nurturing,I don't find they encourage growth the,way they don't challenge me the way my,romantic relationships okay,so Who am I speaking with today my name,is my gender sing what is your idea of a,perfect friendship I would start my,answer off with effortless but that, ignores the fact that in all human, relationship you will have arguments so,I'd say openness with effortlessness, and then willingness to do activities at,random so those three activities are, necessary and I've noticed the only time, that's possible is with someone who is,not busy at all times so those three, things those three things but like, actually having some free time I think, also like maybe priorities comes in,because you can make time or budget your, time accordingly if you want to be,friends with someone or maintain a,friendship I agree completely I a friend,of mine assigned a friend recently about, the idea of busy yeah when you say, you're busy to someone you're not really, busy which you can always make time it's,more your saying you were a lot at the,top to my 30 list I'd rather be doing, other things so yeah friendship, definitely comes in with that idea you, need to prioritize this person right and, make sure they feel like you actually so,what's your idea of a perfect friendship,I mean I guess I would think that, there's no such thing as perfection but, other than that I think of my best, friend and my husband mm-hmm and both of,those relationships especially with my,best friend I mean we just connect and, have been friends for about 40 years and,can just totally understand each other, and are often dealings with the same, things in life but coming at it from, different directions, yeah with how we approach it or more, what we're bringing to the to the, problem yeah is slightly different yeah,so we help each other really well that, way Trust is a big issue, yeah and also just just getting into, friendship is,a road in itself and in with my husband,in many ways we connected physically, with what we love to do and everything, but talking together was more difficult, and more of a long road probably because,of the male and the female thing yeah so,Who am I speaking with today are you, speaking to an ROC Panda what is your, idea of a perfect friendship the, friendships that I have that that have, had the most impact on me are the ones, that we work on a long-term project for, years or decades but there's a lot of,struggles along the way and we support, each other through the difficult times, and inspire each other to work harder, and maybe achieve something that we are,we haven't been able to achieve so is,there usually like one common goal that, you have in common you're both working, towards that goal or is it like you're,working on your goal and a friend is,working on a different goal and you're,just like encouraging each other to do,what you want and like achieve as much,as you can,it can be both sometimes it's a working,on a publication together or other times,it's each of us is trying to master, different sports together or even, separately and just thank you for, watching please like and subscribe and,let me know in the comments below what, you think of friendship and how would, you answer the question what is your, idea of a perfect friendship thank you, happy travels bye
