breaking tonight,just in the past minute twitter has,announced it is cutting off president,trump's ability,to post on the social media site,permanently,suspending the president's account at,realdonaldtrump,twitter saying after close review of,recent tweets from the president's,account,and the context around them we have,permanently suspended the account due to,the risk,of further incitement and violence in,context,of the horrific events this week we've,made it clear on wednesday that,additional violations of the twitter,rules would,potentially result in this very course,of action joining us again,from the north lawn of the white house,john roberts john obviously this,president has used twitter,throughout his presidency he has some 89,million followers and now,twitter permanently suspending his,account,yeah you know they cut it off for about,a day and a half bretton now they've cut,it off permanently and just to give you,a little more context as to,what's behind all of this twitter put,out a blog,detailing its decision and in that blog,twitter says the president trump's,statement,that he will not be attending the,inauguration is being received,by a number of his supporters is further,confirmation that the election was not,legitimate and is being seen as him,disavowing his previous claim via two,tweets,for an orderly transition on the 20th,the second tweet may also serve it says,here as encouragement,to those potentially considering violent,acts that the inauguration would be a,quote,safe target as he will not be attending,further the use of the words american,patriots,in earlier tweets to describe some of,his supporters is also being,interpreted as support for those,committing violent acts at the u.s,capitol and a tweet that he put out,earlier today,about his supporters having a giant,voice long into the future,and that they will not be disrespected,or treated unfairly in any way shape or,form,is being interpreted as further,indication that president trump,does not plan to facilitate an orderly,transition and instead that he plans to,continue,to support empower and shield those who,believe that he,won the election according to twitter,plans for future,armed protests have already begun,proliferating,on and off twitter including a proposed,secondary attack on the u.s capitol,and state capitol buildings on january,the 17th,so twitter is looking at all of this and,its calculation is that what the,president is saying,even by just saying that i'm not,attending uh the inauguration,is is is being seen as,code language to the president's,supporters that it's a safe target there,at the capitol,that that the election was not,legitimate despite the fact that the,president has called for an,orderly transition so because of this,incitement,to violence as twitter is is perceiving,it,uh they are permanently suspending the,president's account now he can still get,the message out through his digital,media director dan scavino,his facebook and instagram accounts have,also been blocked,this was the way that the president was,reaching out past the press,to get straight to his constituents so,we'll have to see how the president,reacts to all of this,uh brett it seemed that he reacted all,right,to the first suspension because he knew,it was only going to be temporary but,this permanent suspension now this may,draw something out of the president,we haven't seen so it is something to,see a company and they are a company,divine from those statements uh,what they divine in that blog readout,of what it truly means i mean we should,point out the president also,put out uh a video in which he denounced,the violence,pretty specifically in that speech which,came out,on twitter yeah and the president has,long railed against,big tech facebook twitter other other um,social media platforms uh which is why,he has been looking to repeal section,230,uh to that protects them from actions,regarding things that are either posted,or actions that they take,it protects them from legal action so,the president will probably,uh yell even louder and longer about,that whole thing but but you're right,brett that,you know the tweet about for those of,you who have been asking i'm not going,to go to the inauguration on the 20th,would seem to be innocent,on the surface but twitter was saying,when you look at the reaction to it and,the conversation that it's fomenting on,on twitter uh it they're perceiving it,as being,dangerous talk i'm not sure that that's,the interpretation,that you would draw from it but but,again they're taking all of this as a,whole,uh they've long had a problem with,president trump and what he puts on,twitter and it looks like that problem,has now come to a head,in a way that twitter which is a private,company can take unilateral action here,yeah and i think this is going to be a,major story not just from what happened,this week but,going forward about what it means about,the in a tweet the journalists had,been involved in doxing his location and,placed his family in danger musk later,tweeted the suspensions would last for,seven days in other tweets he claimed,the journalists posted his exact,real-time location which he called,assassination coordinates no good and a,violation of Twitter's terms of services,NBC News was unable to verify the,allegation that his real-time location,was in fact posted online it's the same,justification he used on Wednesday for,suspending the account that used,publicly available information to post,the movements of musk's private jet all,of this goes against the promise musk,made to run the site as a free speech,absolutist which has led to the,reinstatement of hundreds of accounts,associated with Q Anon and other,far-right groups many of those accounts,promote conspiracy theories and hate,speech so Joe these are accounts he,claims doxed him this again the the,flight stuff is publicly available but,he shut down the accounts for at least a,week here,yeah and and and these people weren't,doxing him there were there were some,people that that had large followings on,Twitter who would write a negative,column about him on Mashable and then,they'd get get you know suspended or,would tweet something negative about him,and then get their accounts suspended,caddy K you know again it's it's he's,going to ban people who are saying,things about him that may be critical,yeah I mean I don't know whether being,told that you're the richest man in the,world day in day out somehow warps back to that big story developing,tonight Twitter suspending the accounts,of several journalists who cover the,platform and its new owner Elon Musk the,suspensions all happening abruptly in,the last couple of hours with us for,more Alex Stamos he's the former Chief,security officer at both Facebook and,Yahoo he's now a partner at the Krebs,Stamos group Alex we are lucky that you,are on with us tonight this seems really,scary okay these are reporters who,covered Elon Musk who have covered the,changes on Twitter since he took over,now he's claiming these suspensions are,taking place because these reporters put,him at risk potentially posting his,locations but there's not even evidence,any of them did that,that's right he's now suspending,reporters who have linked to people who,have posted the location of private,airplanes that are tracked by a open,network of people across the United,States,um including musk's private jet uh and,uh not the the people who run the,accounts themselves but just journalists,who have reported on that factor now,being banned you know as a chief,security officer I've had to work on,executive protection and it's true CEOs,of big companies have legitimate,security concerns they get lots of death,threats they always worry about their,kids but there's absolutely no evidence,that the accounts that we're posting the,movements of his jet and especially,these journalists did anything to put,his family at risk in fact the example,he brought up was a a run-in with,somebody in Los Angeles where people,figured out the exact location of that,video and it was absolutely nowhere near,an airport it had nothing to do with,this so this is pretty clearly just a,cover for him to start to make really,capricious decisions decisions about the,journalists he wants to be able to to,leave and to kind of throw an elbow at,all of media because you know as you,know the modern media is really kind of,addicted to Twitter both for getting,clicks and a lot of journalists spend a,lot of time there getting stories,finding sources and such and by,demonstrating that he can take them down,at any moment I think he's looking to to,intimidate the people who have given him,negative coverage given that this is,Elon musk's mindset at this moment How,concerned should we be earlier this week,they basically got rid of their trust,and Safety Council something you know a,whole lot about,right so you know for the last couple of,weeks musk has brought in uh independent,journalists uh to give them access to,documents about how Twitter made,controversial decisions in its past uh,including taking down the account of,President Trump after the January 6th,riots,he made a really big deal that the idea,that the the internal deliberations of,the company where lots of Executives,debated back and forth back and forth,should we do this what's the Free Speech,rights here what do our rules say that,that was a scandal and now you can see,what is the alternative to having a,bunch of smart people argue about a,difficult decision is that one guy can,just make the call in the middle of the,night and ban a bunch of people um and,this is what we're going to see in the,future of Twitter is that he has done,the opposite of what effectively every,other social media network has done,which is social media companies have,tried to create councils committees,external oversight boards mechanisms,that take these decisions out of the,hands of the CEO because in the end,those CEOs don't want this level of,responsibility where musk has done he,has spent 44 billion dollars to make,himself the most important decider of,who speaks in the planet and he's,advertised that out to the world,including to America's adversaries,countries like China that have,manipulated Twitter in the past and who,have lots of Leverage over him so I I,think there's the specific decision here,which I think he made a mistake,um and it really demonstrates the risk,to U.S journalists and people who might,disagree with Mustang on Twitter but I,think in the long run he's also putting,himself in a really difficult position,of trying to adjudicate speech when he,has economic interests all around around,the world including in autocratic States,like the People's Republic of China,enormous economic interests that's a,really important banned and when I posted that,tweet never in my wildest dreams that I,think I would,um,get in trouble for it or be banished for,it but you know I think we're seeing,that it's Elon musk's playground and if,he wants to kick people out of it that's,his prerogative yeah I mean and and he's,now got a poll up as to whether you,should get your account back in seven,days or straight away I think the poll,is going in your favor at the moment,um but it has a chilling effect doesn't,it uh in terms of what people are going,to say about Elon Musk and all his,businesses now,oh absolutely I mean I think that's part,of the goal and you know it's very,likely part of his goal to create that,chilling effect where you know beyond,linking to this Facebook page the one,commonality that myself and the other,journalists who are banned yesterday,have is that we've all been critical of,Elon Musk and the way that he is running,Twitter and so now you know as I'm,pondering possibly getting back on,Twitter,um I'd be lying to you if I didn't say,that that will be kind of in the back of,my mind,um that hey if you post this thing,critical of Elon Musk you might be,banned well there are right-wing,commentators and Elon Musk fans saying,well where were you when they banned,Donald Trump you know um is freedom of,speech only applicable to liberals,yeah well I think the important thing to,keep in mind is that violations of,freedom of speech here in the U.S just,have to do with government interference,in speech it really has nothing to do,with the operations of private,businesses so I would never portray,myself as being a victim of any sort of,free speech infringement I mean I will,point out the hypocrisy of Elon Musk,saying just weeks ago that his,commitment to freedom of speech as he,understands it extends to this Elon jet,account and you know clearly he has,changed his mind because his actions,directly contradict what he said on,Twitter publicly just a few weeks ago,but um you know I think obviously the,difference with Donald Trump was that he,was determined to violate the terms of,service because he had used the platform,to incite an Insurrection here in the,U.S and to try and overthrow an election,he clearly fears for his safety and the,safety of his family and and you did,link to an account that got around his,attempts to have privacy for the,location of his Jets,and and did reveal where it was,I don't think so because you know it's,just the effect of life that reporting,on the whereabouts of private jets is,something that has been just a part of,media reporting here for many many years,I mean you

a really interesting dynamic at,play right now,well along those same lines dan,twitter's decision to ban the president,has reignited calls from some lawmakers,to repeal section 230,which protects social media companies,from being sued over content that its,users post,would a change to that regulation,prevent what we saw take place at the,capitol on wednesday,yeah woodland this is also really,fascinating so,uh if you changed altered or repealed,section 230 you kind of flip,uh what happened on its head now social,media firms,at least according to section 230 are,not,required to moderate every single post,on their site,look this was designed in an era before,the internet but according to the eff,the electronic frontier foundation this,is really a cornerstone,of the web as we have it now and again,according to the eff they say that,it allows social media firms to allow,their users to publish posts,and selectively edit the ones that they,think uh they,should be taken down now if you were to,get rid of section 230 it would,get rid of those uh freedoms and would,require,internet firms to moderate every single,post so it's,just not likely that we would see sites,like facebook twitter or other social,media,at all and as problematic as these sites,can be,i think it would be a very different,world if we didn't have the ability to,publish to,facebook twitter and other social media,sites,so interesting that president trump was,really pushing for the repeal of section,230 just as a can the literature,on this you couldn't even write all,right dan what impact will this ban,have on actually limiting mr trump's,influence,do you expect that to see him move to,alternative platforms like parlor or gab,which have,less strict rules and tell us a little,bit more about what's happening to those,platforms now,yeah so this will have a significant,impact on,the president's ability to amplify and,speak directly,instantly with his followers but it will,also have a,huge impact on something that we haven't,really talked a lot about and that's his,ability,to consume information of course twitter,is not just a publishing platform,it's a consumption platform and it's,algorithmic,so even though the president may have,only followed a few dozen accounts,um he was able to consume thousands of,posts,through lists and other content shared,by his followers,so not only did twitter limit the,president's ability to publish they also,altered his ability to receive,conspiracy theories,q and on and other uh kind of violent,extremist content,that is interesting now the second part,of your question that is interesting,yeah the president couldn't could move,to sites like,parlor or gab or other social networks,that use air quotes,uh free speech that which really they,just don't moderate content,um but that would be a challenge first,of all he wouldn't have the same,following look these sites are small for,a reason they don't have the scale,uh or or um technology that facebook or,twitter have those facebook and twitter,aren't just large sites,they're large sites that have invested,very deeply in their own technology,platforms,you can't just replicate that overnight,so yeah again the president could jump,to these other networks but these other,networks,aren't facebook for a reason,well we know that social media had an,oversized influence
