BUT AS IT SAYS HERE ON THE BACK,,THERE SAY BLUSH HERE THAT SAYS THIS THE BOOK TRUMP FEARS MOST.,WHY DO YOU THINK, WHY DO YOU THINK WHAT MAKE THIS BOOK,DIFFERENT, MAGGIE HABERMAN. >> I WANTED TO PAINT A DEEPER,PORTRAIT OF TRUMP. I WANTED TO GO BACK AND LOOK AT,THE WORLD THAT MADE HIM, THE SPECIFICS OF HIS CHARACTER.,AND THIS IS A CHARACTER STUDY AND DONALD TRUMP DOES NOT LIKE,PEOPLE TALKING ABOUT HIS CHARACTER.,HE PREFERS TWO VERSIONS OF A PORTRAIT OF HIM, AND ONE IS,ADULATION, AND ONE IS ONE THAT BASICALLY MAKES HIM SOUND LIKE A,STRONG MAN, A VERY CONFIDENT STRONGMAN, THIS IS NEITHER ONE,OF THOSE SO HE DOESN'T LIKE THAT.,>> SO IT IS NOT ADULATION, IS HE NOT A STRONG MAN, I'M SURE IT IS,A COMPLEX CHARACTERIZATION BECAUSE THERE ARE A LOT OF,THREADS BEING PULLED HERE BUT HE SAID AND IT SAYS SO IN THE BOOK,,I BELIEVE, IT SAYS HE POINTED AT YOU ONE POINT AND SAID SHE'S,LIKE MY PSYCHIATRIST WHAT DID YOU THINK WHEN HE SAID THAT,ABOUT YOU. >> THAT IT DIDN'T MEAN VERY MUCH,IF ANYTHING IT WAS A MEANINGLESS LINE MEANT TO FLATTER, HE IS,ALWAYS PLAYING TO WHATEVER AUDIENCE IS IN FRONT OF HIM.,AND THE REALITIES IS THAT HE HAS SAID THAT ABOUT HIS TWITTER,FEED, OTHER INTERVIEWS HE HAS GIVEN.,HE TREATS EVERYONE-- . >> Stephen: A BUCKET OF,CHICKEN, UH-HUH. >> HAVE YOU EVER EATEN WITH HIM,,HAVE YOU EVER BEEN WITH HIM WHEN HE EATS, YOU HAVE SEEN HIM EATEN,IN FRONT OF YOU. >> THIS IS ME SMILING.,>> Stephen: OKAY, LET'S JUST SAY FOR A SECOND, I KNOW YOU ARE,NOT HIS PSYCHIATRIST, AFTER DOING THIS CHARACTER STUDY, A,DEEP ANALYSIS, IF YOU WERE, IF YOU WOULD, DOCTOR WHAT WOULD BE,YOUR DIAGNOSIS? >> I INTENTIONALLY DIDN'T WRITE,A BOOK OF TAKES. HE INSULTED ANGELA MERKEL,,CALLED HER THAT B. DID HE SAY THAT B OR DID HE SAY,B-I-T-C-H. >> THE LATTER.,>> Stephen: THE LATTER. >> AND HE DIDN'T SPELL IT.,>> Stephen: HE DIDN'T SPHEL IT, COULD HE SPELL IT?,OKAY. THE LIST GOES ON.,WHAT DO YOU THINK IN THE BOOK UPSETS HIM THE MOST?,>> THE FLUSHING DOCUMENTS DOWN THE TOILET, WAS ACTUALLY.,>> Stephen: REVEALING THAT. >> I THINK THAT IS WHAT UPSET,HIM THE MOST. HE HAD AN IMMEDIATE AND,PRONOUNCED AND ANGRY REACTION TO THAT REPORTING WHEN I PUT IT OUT,MANY MONTHS AGO. IT WAS REPORTING THAT HE ISSUED,A STATEMENT T WAS A PHONE CALL TO THE WORLD.,AND I THINK HIS EXACT STATEMENT WAS HIS QUESTION WAS WHO WOULD,KNOW THAT, WHICH I THINK WAS ACTUALLY A LITERAL QUESTION THAT,HE WAS ASKING. BUT HE ASKED IT OUT LOUD.,BUT IT MADE HIM QUITE ANGRY. AND THEN HE SPENT SOME TIME,ASKING SOME OF HIS AIDS WHAT DO YOU THINK OF THAT REPORTING.,AND USUALLY THAT'S BECAUSE HE'S TRYING TO FIGURE OUT WHETHER,SOMETHING IS DAMAGING TO HIM OR NOT OR HOW MUCH MORE COULD BE,THERE. >> Stephen: Y'ALL HAVE,PHOTOGRAPHS TOO, THERE ARE PHOTOGRAPHS OF THE STUFF TORN UP,AT THE BOTTOM OF THE TOILET. >> THERE WERE, IN TWO DIFFERENT,TOILETS IN TWO DIFFERENT COUNTRIES, ONE IN THIS ONE AND,ONE OVERSEAS. >> Stephen: WOW.,>> RIGHT. >> Stephen: SO SPREADING IT,OUT, NOT TO CLOG UP ONE PIPE, VERY THOUGHTFUL BECAUSE HE IS,VERY OBSESSED. REMEMBER HOW OBSESSED HE WAS,WITH LOW FLOW TOILETS, NOW WE KNOW WHY.,>> I THINK IT MAY HAVE ANSWERED SOME QUESTIONS, YES.,>> Stephen: CAN YOU TALK ABOUT THE ROLL THE MEDIA PLAYED IN T

New York Times reporter & best-selling author Maggie Haberman discusses her new book on Trump

foreign, the author of the best seller confidence, man the making of Donald Trump and the, breaking of America we're speaking at,the University Club of Chicago with its, stunning views of Chicago on Michigan,Avenue so Maggie welcome to Chicago and,and thanks for doing the show uh your, book,is a Chronicle in the sense of a big, chunk of your life uh Maggie Haberman, has been covering Donald Trump since the,1990s Maggie you're the journalist who, certainly most identified with him,uh,you started out at the New York Times in,2015 after growing up in New York, journalism at the New York Post New York, daily news in Politico and you were part,of your team that went up here with sir,in 2018 for reporting on the, investigations into Donald Trump and his, advisors up so much of your book is,about the tribalism of New York that, defined him and I think in a sense to,find you two so could you explain how, this New York, tribalism impacted Trump and influenced, how you covered him maybe starting back,in the day sure so I,first started covering Donald Trump, intensely in 2011 when he was running, for possibly running for president and, considering it he was you know he was, omnipresent if he worked at a New York, tablet,um he came up in life in 1960s 70s 80s,New York City when everything was, defined by this US versus them, mentality of racial politics of class, politics uh where corruption touched on,various aspects of the construction, industry the real estate industry the, political landscape and the media, landscape uh and all of these forces, along with his own domineering fathers, you know Corner cutting and and approach,to a business,um,shaped who he was and how he looked at,the world and foretold a lot of what, this presidency was going to look like, when Donald Trump was talking about,American Carnage in his inaugural, address you know he is evoking this very, you know crime-addled 1980s New York, that just was not at all what much of,the U.S looked like at that moment when,he was about to assume control over the, federal government,um in terms of me at the tabloids that, same world shaped, how we covered New York it shaped uh a,lot of reactions to Crime it shaped a,lot of uh you know the the fixtures of,the type of stories that showed up in,the tabloids and Trump himself turned, himself into a commodity for the, tabloids to cover particularly the New,York Post you know he had a pretty, transactional relationship with the, gossip pages in particular he was, constantly you know placing stories, about himself as a source close to,Donald Trump,um and so understanding that that was,how he operated helped me understand how,he was going to operate as a candidate,as a president,do you find that then you could transfer, you were able to translate better and, analyze better what Trump was saying, because in a sense you had that secret, language in your head I think that's a,good way of putting it I mean I think, that I I certainly uh understood not, just how he approaches things and his, behaviors but to your point the, behaviors of people around him and, that's so especially with Trump it's key,to understanding any politician or any, business figure but with trump it is,really key because he spent so much time, pitting his staff against one another so,for instance I had been dealing with,Roger Stone since 2002. Roger Stone is,Donald Trump's longest serving uh you, know political advisor on and off but, political advisor with whom he has a,very strange relationship,um but uh of sort of you know love Hage,um but but I started uh encountering,Roger Stone when Roger Stone was running,an independent candidate in the, governor's race in New York that year, you know too and I got a sense of how,Stone operator it and then I started, getting more of a sense of how the world, around Trump operate operate and so it,did it gave me I don't say an edge but,it certainly gave me you know a base of,knowledge to operate from as this whole, new world was blowing up nationally so,one of the things you write about in in,the book is how uh,Trump lies and by the way to the point, when you mentioned that when he was, dealing with the tabs he would call up,and impersonate someone near the end of,the book you have an interview with,Debbie Dingle the congresswoman from,Detroit who tells a story where well you, tell it sure so I it's not an interview, with Debbie Dingle but I do write about, this this moment where uh,her husband has died she takes his seat,in Congress,Trump is helpful in some way with the, funeral and because of that believes, that she'll be indebted to him forever, and so when she makes clear that she is,going to vote for uh in favor of,impeachment and the first impeachment, case against him he goes nuts and he,attacks her at a rally he attacks her, late husband he says you know something, about he's looking he's looking down on,us and he says or maybe he's looking up,and that was a you know clear, implication that he might be in hell, she tweeted her distress over this and, then she gave an intervie

Maggie Haberman: ‘There Is A Bitterness Around [Trump] And A Quickness To Anger’

under the presidential records act, everything should come back, and there is no crime you negotiate, whatever you negotiate is fine it's a,process, but they make it sound like the greatest, crime in America was committed, welcome back the justice department, suspects former president Trump still, has documents that belong to the, government and possibly classified, material beyond what was seized at,Mar-A-Lago sources tell NBC news that, the top doj counterintelligence official, recently communicated that concern to,Trump's legal team the justice, department has signaled in court filings, that there may be documents missing FBI,agents found 48 empty folders marked, classified when they searched Mar-A-Lago,in August author and New York Times, senior political reporter Maggie,Haberman has been covering Trump since, her days at the New York Post in the,1990s her new book confidence man the, making of Donald Trump and the breaking,of America and Maggie is here welcome, back to Meet the Press here is the book,Maggie Haberman congratulations thank, you it's so good to have you so,I've read it cover to cover that's great, fantastic book um and we are going to,delve into it but as we are sitting here,as you've just completed this you're,still reporting on Donald Trump and your, headlines in recent days include the, fact that uh doj officials believe that, they're still classified documents at,Mar-A-Lago and that Mr Trump may have, been trying to cut some type of a deal,do you think that Donald Trump, understands how much legal Jeopardy he's,in right now I actually do I think he,understands how much legal Jeopardy he's,in and then and then I think he,convinces himself that it's not that bad,but the fact that he spent three million, dollars on a retainer for a lawyer Whose, advice he has sometimes not listened to,I should note but the fact that he was, willing to do that I had people who, worked for Trump in the 1990s reach out,to me to say this is the biggest legal, retainer he has ever paid as far as they, knew so I think that speaks to How,concerned he is I think it's a,significant point you make because you, really detail all of the legal battles, that he has had going back to the 1990s,and this moment you're making the point, feels different let me ask you about one,of the passages in in your book that, relates to this current moment it,relates to Herschel Walker who Trump,hand-picked to run for Senate in Georgia, you asked him about what you called a,complicated personal history that, worried Republicans from the bat so this, was a conversation from a year ago in,your book former president Trump says to,you quote I don't think it's a problem, today you ask why is that why do you, think that's changed the president, responds because the world is changing, you right he did acknowledge that it was, changing he didn't acknowledge that it,was changing because he had helped, change it and as you know Maggie a lot,of people have compared this moment to,the Access Hollywood moment from Trump's,candidacy is that a fair assessment do,you think I think it's an understandable,Benchmark that people are looking toward, and I should note that when we had that, conversation Mitch McConnell uh the,Senate minority leader was still not on,board with Walker I think he sort of,threw in the the the the towel, eventually and got behind him,um I don't know that everything is the, same as Donald Trump and I think that's,what we're going to find out there is,Donald Trump I still believe there are, people who can follow his Playbook there, are people who can try to be like him, more often than not they're people who,are celebrities either in the world of,film or television or sports but Trump I,still think may be sui generous in that,he was part of the pop culture fabric, for so many decades and also the nature,of these allegations are not the same as,the access Hollywood tape and and that, was one of a number of controversies, that Trump had survived this feels a,little different but we'll see one of,the things that makes your book so,fascinating to read is that you do go,back to the beginning and you describe a,portrait of a man who has wrestled with, the truth since his very early days and,you have this anecdote when he goes to,the dedication of the Verrazano Bridge, with his father he's a freshman in,college at the time and then years later,he talks to a New York Times Reporter, about it and he gets all sorts of,details wrong the weather things that, were said at that dedication and you, write he revealed himself to be be an,unreliable narrator of his own history, from its early moments his comments went, unchecked for years but for good reason, why would anyone think such details, might be untrue where do you think that, impulse comes from Maggie from the, former president to not tell the truth, about things it's a great question but,it has been with him for a very very, long time I think there are parts of it,that he absorbed this is before Roy Cohn, his famous fixer and lawyer was in his, life I th

foreign, sorry it's a little warm in here we did, crank up the air conditioning but uh,clearly not not soon enough you know um,it's so it's so amazing seeing such a,large audience here and um you all, clearly appreciate how special it is to,have Maggie Haberman with us this, evening I'm Brad Graham by the way I'm,the co-owner of the bookstore along with, with my wife Alyssa Muscatine,um,you know among all the journalists, who've covered Donald Trump over the, years Maggie has done so most, extensively and now has produced a,definitive book about Trump's life and, presidency a confidence man the making,of Donald Trump and the breaking of,America,a native New Yorker Maggie got her start,in political reporting with New York's,two famed tabloids that Daily News in,the post then moved to Politico for a,few years before landing at the New York,Times in 2015 as a campaign, correspondent, during Trump's presidency she was, credited with with countless scoops and,her book is filled with lots of fresh,Revelations but as Joe Klein wrote in in,a review in the times more than the news, nuggets confidence man is notable for,the quality of its observations about,Trump's character and and will, undoubtedly serve as a primary source, about the most vexing president in,American history, and yes there has been, lots of previous believe me we in the, book business are very grateful about, that,um but but Maggie says Maggie's is the, whole package uh it joins the story of,how Trump came to be before he assumed, the presidency with how he operated as,president,it examines the influences that shaped,Trump's personality and character and, then how those traits defined his, presidency,in the prologue Maggie recalls how after,uh covering Trump during the 2016,campaign she received a note from a,colleague,um when Trump won saying this is great, for you she was told she was quite, surprised actually if you can believe it,to see all of you here gathered for her,um but you know uh her her tough, outstanding coverage also has made her a,target of uh Trump's attacks and and, other uh even uglier stuff so please, understand why this evening,we won't be having a signing line at the,end Maggie has pre-signed a lot of other, copies for anybody who's who's,interested afterwards uh up at the, checkout desk Maggie doesn't do many,in-person appearances which makes us,appreciate all the more her presence, here this evening,we're also grateful to have CNN's,Caitlin Collins moderating the event as,White House correspondent for the, network she's had her own many, experiences covering Trump and as a sign,of her rising star in broadcasting it,was announced earlier this month that, she'll soon be co-anchoring a revamped,CNN Morning Show,so ladies and Gentlemen please join me,in welcoming Maggie Haberman and Caitlin,Collins, they weren't kidding about it being a,packed house, wow thank you all for coming you know, this is a bookstore on a Friday night, right,I'm like really impressed, these audience questions that I've been, reading through as well,um thank you all for being here so much, obviously this is really special for me,personally because,um I started covering the White House, when Trump took office any White House, reporter of that time will tell you, point blank Maggie is hands down the, best White House reporter the best Trump, reporter of that era and that is not an,easy feat in a time when it was,all-consuming of your life of Twitter of,everything and so it's an honor for me,to be here moderating this event reading, this book and getting to ask you about,it,thank you so much for doing this uh,really thank you all for coming I feel a,little like I'm at my own funeral but,I'm very grateful to see you all here uh,for it,um well it's gonna be a packed up so,um there have been a lot of trump books, obviously during the Trump years a lot,of Scoops a lot of stories a lot of,things that you read and you're like can, this really be true yours, those talked about what he did while he,was in office and as a candidate yours, talked about why he did it what made you, take that approach,so I I tried to look at both honestly I,tried to look at how the why he did it,informed the what he did and I I took, that approach for a couple of reasons, one is to your point there's a lot of,trump books out there they've they've,been filled with Scoops they have been, things that have left me kicking myself,I wish I had had them,um you know they they informed a lot, about that time in office and he is one,of the most written about people on the, planet,um the the perspective that I could, offer is somebody who came from the same, place he did saw a lot of the same, forces in a city that was really mired,in dysfunction and Corruption touching, almost every aspect of the lives the, life that he was involved with uh well,he came up and I had covered him and, been around him prior to the fact that,he would uh to him becoming a candidate,in 2015.,um and I think that pages of this book, one of the audience question was um that,I loved w

calling the current administration, illegitimate and saying he will be back,in office this summer, new york times maggie haberman writes, quote trump has been telling a number of,people he's in contact with, that he expects he'll get reinstated by,august, new york times reporter maggie haberman, joins us now she's a washington, correspondent for the times and a cnn, political analyst, maggie i have to say when you wrote that,my eyes popped,i was stunned the former president is,telling people he expects to be,reinstated by august what's going on,here,so john what he's doing is echoing, things that are being said by sidney, powell who was his lawyer, although you know she he distanced, himself from her at certain points, over the final months of the, administration but she was helping, advise him,on these efforts to overturn the, election last year this is being said uh,by mike lindell the ceo of mypillow, who has been pushing this for some time,he's echoing what they're saying the, difference between them saying it and, donald trump saying it,is one is the former president one is a,possible future, party nominee even even given all of his, legal troubles,if he ran for president again uh he,would still have a very good shot at the, nomination, and this is something that some of his, supporters will hear, and take seriously when he says it there,is no legal mechanism by which this can, happen, there are people who are telling him, things are possible that are not, possible which is exactly what we saw, happen, after the november 3rd election last, year which was all the lead up to,january 6th,as we know and what we saw in the attack,on the capitol and so,there is a there is a dangerous, component about this conversation that's,going on and i think, one thing that is jarring about our, current news environment john is that, there is a separation, between what uh literally and the this, sort of choose your own adventure of,news has gotten worse progressively over, time, democrats who support joe biden don't,want to hear anything about donald trump, and because donald trump is not on,twitter anymore they think therefore,he doesn't really exist except he does, really exist strongly,in this right-wing ecosystem it is true,he's not on twitter it's true he's not,on facebook,he can't direct followers the same way,he did he's also going to start, appearing publicly again and so,the public really needs to be aware this,is something that he has been saying,to a number of people and the other, thing he's been doing john i should just, note,he has been trying you know as he spent,a long time during 2017,trying to get advisors to say fire jeff, sessions the attorney general because he,didn't want to do it himself,he has been trying to get conservative, writers to publish, you know in a more mainstream way that, this election was quote unquote stolen, from him his repeated false claim about, that,to try to legitimize it to try to get, people to call attention to this,um you know these things may not matter, they also could have consequences, you mentioned sydney powell the, president's former loyal, lawyer maggie that he is echoing what, she is saying this is what she said at a,q and on conference over the weekend, there are cases where elections have, been overturned, but there's never been one at the, presidential level which everybody will, jump to point out that doesn't mean that,it can't be done,it should be that he can simply be,reinstated that a new inauguration data, set, and biden is told to move out of the, white house and,and and president trump should be moved, back in,so of note here sydney powell is at this, moment, being sued for defamation to the tune of,1.3 billion dollars, and you can't make this up because her, legal team is arguing quote,no reasonable person would believe her, lies about the election now that said,a lot of people whether you want to say, they're reasonable or not,do believe it how coordinated is this, considering we're hearing the former, president say it we're hearing it at a,conference like this, look i think that the the idea of it,being a plot i think is overstating the, level of strategy here,um or and again do-ability remember that, this is not something for which there is,a provision in the constitution it is,really important to note this is not how, this works, that having been said in terms of the, ability to ignite supporters of the, former president particularly the q anon, network, particularly people uh in a certain, segment of the, internet it is real and so i you know is,is trump, regurgitating what he's hearing from, lindell and what he's hearing sidney, powell say,and some others say i think that is what, this is he has been told by a number of,advisors, that he has to stop focusing on this it,is part of why he is so,laser focused on these quote unquote, audits uh,in arizona and he's been trying to get, them in other states, because he thinks they're going to,overturn the elections one of the things, that he has said to a couple of people,is and a part of this he h

Maggie Haberman - The Ultimate Guide to Donald J. Trump | The Daily Show

Maggie Haberman - The Ultimate Guide to Donald J. Trump | The Daily Show

Maggie haverman Welcome to The Daily,Show thanks for having me,um you have written a book that many, have called The Ultimate Guide to Donald,J Trump because it feels like you have,an understanding of him that few never, mind Jonas few human beings do and and, what's interesting is every time I've,seen your reporting on him every every, time I've seen him comment on you and,the conversations you have with each, other and the interviews that he grants, you even though he seems to hate you but, then he likes you it seems a little bit, like the like like the relationship,Hannibal had with Clarice, like I can't tell if you if you have a,mutual admiration for each other,Fascination as a journalist explain to,me why he keeps speaking to you and then, afterwards says to you why would you, write the things that he said to you, first of all thank you and thank you for, having me a couple of things look he's a,subject who I cover and I have covered a,number of politicians over the last 26,years I covered Hillary Clinton I,covered Mike Bloomberg I covered Rudy,Giuliani who in many ways was a,proto-trump at least in certain aspects,of his behavior and now is very much, like Trump and and has become is more, similar to him over time Trump needs the, media in a way that's unlike any other, politician I've ever seen he craves, attention and I explore this uh in the, book he just constantly wants to hold, the media's Gaze and he wants to see if,he can sell you on a version of himself, and he wants to get what he would call a,good story literally those would be the, words a good story and then you write, about him accurately and he says that,it's unfair uh you know so there's,that's that's the dynamic you're talking, about but he basically you know he's,obsessed with the New York Times that is,a lot of what this is about you know he,is uniquely focused on the paper and I'm,just the person who has covered him more, often than not it really feels like he,is somebody who is Frozen in time, because everything he's obsessed with, seems to be something that was popular, when he reached some sort of zeitgeist, himself you know so it'll be the New,York Times and then he'll complain about, certain magazines but not others in an,SNL he'll have a he has a certain, pension for but they're not other shows,it's like it's an interesting world that,he exists in that isn't current but but, seems current to him and in the in the, book you talk about how he lives minutes,to minute when the rest of us move, almost from 24 hours to 24 hours but it,doesn't seem like he's played as much by,the things we think he is,as as he actually is like do we what do,we misunderstand about Trump I actually, think you understand really well based,on everything you just said I think, there is a uh there is a preserved and,Amber quality to him you just described, that about how all of his cultural, touchstones are in the 1980s which is,when he was reaching his height he loves,to talk about how many times he's on the, cover of Time Magazine,um you know national news magazines, weeklies are are not in their Heyday, right now and yet he talks about it all,the time the celebrities he talks about, are from the 1980s the sports figures, generally are from the 1980s it's when,he was rising to prominence and I agree, with you that I think there is a degree, which he has just stuck there and he's,also stuck there culturally he's stuck, there in terms of racial politics he is,stuck there in terms of New York City's,machine boss politics from that era and,he exported so much of that onto,Washington and onto the Republican Party, the other thing that I think that people, don't understand and I try to show this, and explore this is his fascination with, violence and how much violent Islands, informs what he thinks of strength and, then strength in terms informs what he,thinks is a strong boss or a strong, leader so you will hear him praise you, know a local machine party boss like the, former Brooklyn Democratic party head as,ruling with an iron fist he'll use the, same words about Xi Jinping the, president of China who's an,authoritarian it's all contextless and, kind of flat and the same and I think, people miss that yes he's playing to,crowds yes he will say whatever he has,to say to survive small increments of,time but ultimately the scenarios that, exist for him kind of stay the same but, what makes him, scarier in my reading of this book is,people often see Donald Trump as,somebody who is setting the trends but,as you read through this book and as you, understand the man you come to realize, that he is oftentimes a victim of the, trends and then he plays to them so,he'll say something to his crowd that he,believes the crowd won't Vibe with it,and so then he'll change what he,believes in to keep going with the crowd, which makes him even scarier because if,you think about authoritarian leaders or,any others out there who go I will with,an iron fist their fist is their fist, but Donald Trump says how would you like,my fist to be and the
