Jimmy Connors vs Brad Gilbert | US Open 1987 Quarterfinal

uh,thank you, squeaking you here is tennis shoes, trying to change directions, brett connor's looking on as connors, hits the slice backhand up the line, gilbert on the full run pops it up,jimmy nails that two-handed cross court, there is the longest standing tennis fan, forever i think he sleeps here, there is the right foot he's,having the trouble with it's the one, that he puts his weight on as he serves, that left-handed serve, watch the weight come on it right there, well brad gilbert's been hearing all, about conor's foot and he says hey look,he's in the quarterfinals of the u.s,open he's got to be playing pretty well, out there,it can't be bothering him too much even, jimmy says of his,of his foot i'll i'd play out there on a,peg leg if i had to,this is a us open this only happens once,a year so you go out and you do the best, you can,you try to make it through,a very fine law by gilbert advantage, gilbert, yes, one of the most individual of games and,yet he's a tremendous team, sports fan it's big on davis cup,as well he's represented the country our, country a couple of times, connor's dodging a fourth break point, and connors survives four great points,to hold,uh,uh,there you see what we're referring to,slits two on the side two on the top,30 15. gilbert's got such strong passing, shots down the line off both the, forehand, and the backhand, well the fans love jimmy they really, applauded this last volley effort from, him,it was a great stab and jimmy says,as as we have another look at the lunch, volley winner, connor says of the fans i love playing, here and and the fans have won me a few, titles, they sure do back him 30 all, right one line and now he painted, another,oh yes, there's patty and brett, sitting over on the far side, and doug henderson in the blue hat long, time friendship connors,he's here every year at the us open,oh there's that that forehand down the, line,of gilbert's that can be so tough it's a,good, sweeping shot here watch brad's weight, now he starts back, gets the racket back early big swing but,the follow through was, perfect,oh,you hit a return like that this is,gilbert again having a nice afternoon, good hustle on this point for connors, fifteen kind of chips that, that approach out there that right there, you see the forehand way out in front of,him,uh,good point for connors here gilbert, continues just to float the ball back, jimmy trying to create some pace it's a,good deep ball, closes in hits the two-hander but it's,like gilbert said okay i'm still up two, break points i'm not gonna kill myself,on that point,oh yeah, good volley here from connors 13 stays,in the rally gets the short ball, slices under a little bit now watch, jimmy move to his left, great anticipation there as gilbert got, ready to hit the ball,he moved watch him again sets and then, instantly moves to his left rack it out,in front look where he ends up about a,foot from the net, connors painted the baseline on three, straight shots and winds up breaking, back,to lead 3-2 in the second set, that's good, gilbert sets up very well for this, backhand he slips right here on this, forehand kind of comes up,see the feet sliding now he gets in,position very quickly here racket back, sets, follows through perfect backhand cross, court,he's moving well laterally real well,15 oil, jimmy connor's delicate little volley, there, took the racket back kept it on the, strings he knew he had the winner,oh,ugh, best approach shot gilbert's hit all day,he just, really eased into that shot, takes care of it connor's holding and,he now leads 4-3 in the second gilbert, winning the first by,6-4,uh,one of the best points of the match so,far, okay, now here is the first opening for, connors in quite a while, break point which if he can win he would, then be serving for the set, there he is there's big doug he walks, about 10 feet in front of connors and, everybody gets out of the way that's,right, including me,oh,15 love, big pass, second set point for connors, rarely seen connors run out of gas in,fact if anything he gets tougher,in the fifth, thirty fifteen gilbert again with this, good, passing shot slow ball connors takes it,and comes in,now gilbert will set up again just roll, over the shot,oh gilbert start the third, for one of the rare times gilbert 15,chips that return and closes in,15 oh,again holding at 15.,uh,i talk about a great angle watch the way, connors, not only gets in on this shot but when,he lines up the backhand volley,he just angles it hugely there, advantage corners connors is really, trying to take every single opportunity,to get to the net and make these rallies,a lot shorter, and that's a good play, gilbert was not doing that as much in,the first set all of a sudden he's,realized that the conor's second serve, perhaps dropping just a little short he,was just trying to bore connors to death,in the first set and he did,it worked, connors wants no more of that,um,uh,fans wouldn't mind a little more of that, action 13 love, watch the slice down the line gilbert, tries that good running forehand but, jimmy,

Tennis Baseline Strategy with Coach Brad Gilbert

Tennis Baseline Strategy with Coach Brad Gilbert

I do and I'm Brad Gilbert and welcome to,sports school we are working on winning, baseline winning baseline tennis now is,the modern game of tennis when I was a,kid it was all about hit the ball nice, hit and recover now it's power tennis, and controlled tennis I'd like to think,of the modern tennis player is Andre,Agassi for a baseliner he gave me this, expression the tennis court is like a,match when the ball is hard and deep to,you you play safe and solid when the, ball is short you really take your free, swing the three best baseliners now, problem in the game Andre Agassi Roger,Federer who's the most versatile and, then the ladies maybe Lindsay Davenport, maybe the punt most punishing women's,baseliner I've ever seen and remember, the quicker you move the more options, you got the better chances you got to,win and don't forget that here on sports, school you can use your own remote to,stop pause rewind and fast-forward any,of the training techniques that we are, demonstrating this means you are in,total control you can learn at your own, pace, you, now let's talk about settling in at the, baseline you know andre agassi likes to,hug the baseline rafael nadal is all the,way back here and then you got the guy,in the middle Roger Federer so you could, play from anywhere long as you're,playing aggressively and move it I,always like to think of you know the, court as spots never aim for the line I,always like to give myself so I can move,my opponent four feet by four feet I,don't want to aim too close to the width,or too close to the link if I can get, four by four I know that I'm gonna be,moving my opponent as soon as I hit and,I move my opponent I want to recover and,get back just in case I get a short ball, then I could take a good swing and, finish the point what you don't want to,do was you're removing your opponent as,you hit oh I hit a good one and stare, then you're not getting back to the, middle and then you're vulnerable do a,short ball so remember when you hit a,quality shot hit and recover Roger,Federer is a genius at hitting and, recovery he's almost hitting and, recovering in the same swing so remember, for the club player don't stare and, recover to the next ball and you're on,your way to becoming a power baseliner, once you hit me a couple of shots see,I'm going for about four feet area Rossa, and I can give myself some room you know,to have a chance to stay in the point, when you do about six seven of those, remember don't aim too close to the line, try to get some width in length and, remember soon as you hit a good shot, don't stare it anticipate it's gonna, come back and be ready for the short one,to finish the point, now you've settled in on the baseline, your next goal is to move your opponent, when you can move your opponent off the, home base this is where all sudden, you've got your opponent in trouble, basically what you want to do is aim,cross-court because that's going over, the low part of the net and you give, yourself a margin of error I also like,to think that you want to get the ball, anywhere from three to four feet over, the net so you can get more length in,the court most of us when we try to hit,the ball hard we hit it a little flatter,we hit it low over the net and it,doesn't get very deep in the court and, then sometimes it doesn't get away from, your opponent,it leaves yourself vulnerable I always, think think three times cross court one, time down the line and try to avoid, going that first ball down the line, that's more for the pros for the club, player you think oh solid cross court,it's like a left jab or a right jab in,boxing it's the safe solid shot and you, want to get your opponent moving just, slightly one way so all sudden the next, time you can get them slightly going the, other way hopefully you can induce a,short one here watch give me a couple, and technique is so big on this you want,to have a nice clean swing using that, tee I use the left hand to me I like to,hit the forehand nice clean swing I give,me one backhands if I can hit it good, back in step in so the key on those, shots remember take about a four by four, area don't aim too close to the sideline, not too close to the baseline give, yourself maybe a little check mark on,the court four feet by four feet that's,plenty of room to move a club player to,have the open ball to finish it,you've done all the hard work you've,settled in on the baseline you have, moved your opponent now the easy one the, finisher this is the shot you've set up,everything to winning the point and what, you want to do is go to the ball get the, ball before it drops Pete Sampras the, best I ever saw as soon as he saw the, ball hanging he would sprint forward, good mechanics and finish the shot not, take it for granted a lot of us like to,do it on the forehand side a lot of the, people that have good two-handed,backhands also like to do it with the, back hit but this is one shot I call a,lot of us get the big eyes we just take,it for granted we get up there and we,get sloppy we kind of take a ba

Strategic Serving for Tennis with Coach Brad Gilbert

Strategic Serving for Tennis with Coach Brad Gilbert

how you doing everybody I'm Brad Gilbert, and welcome to sports school we're gonna, work on the sir I feel like it's the, most important shot in the game it's the, only shot where your opponent doesn't,have the chance to stop you if you throw,it up and do something good you're in,great shape and don't forget that here,on sports school you can use your own, remote to stop pause rewind and,fast-forward any of the training, techniques that we are demonstrating, this means you are in total control you,can learn at your own pace, when you're serving in the Duce court, the strategy on serving on this side you, have three options you got the down the, middle serve you got the body serve and,the out wide search the reason why you, want to serve wide is to open up the, court so possibly you get a short ball, the next key after you hit a good short, wide sir don't stand there to admire, your serve because all of us are like Oh,hit a good sir get ready to hit your big, forehead I almost call it it's two parts, you serve and you get ready to hit that, four in serve stick and move, the next serve that you can use is the, body serve you remember Pat Rafter he,was the king of the body serve he liked,to really get you in in a jam position, get you an awkward position where maybe, you can only bump the return back or for,you people at home it like the serving, volley the body is a great place to,serve and the last one maybe the most, important is the down the tee you know, they call it the t-bone or the middle, sir you go right down the middle and, that's the one where you really want to,win the point your kill sir now I like,to go for like that big one every once a,while because I kind of like gets the,old rush of blood the key on the serve, right down the middle don't aim right, for the line and try to get your toss as,far as you can out in the court and this,is one you really want to go for it,because it's low over the net so lowest, part of the net and if you make it you, want to make it with a little pop you, want to make it like you know 20 miles,an hour it's not going to hurt your, opponent so this one here when you, really line it up you want to throw it,out there and you really want to try to,crack it because all said if you hit a,good one you might hit that game-winner,you might hit that ace but remember when, you're going up the middle the lowest, part of the net put a lot of pop into it,and don't aim for the lines we're never, good enough to hit the lines I've been, playing this game 40 years I still can't,hit the line so the strategy to serve, you remember you can go wide to open up,the court you got the body serve to give, your opponent no angle so all sudden,he's in trouble, and then you use the t-bone for the big,one where you gotta try to win the point, those are the strategies on,do side of the court and if you can do,these your serve is going to get a lot, better now we're going to go to the add, side of the court this is for you right, handers at home the tougher side for, your lefties you're at home on the,left-hand side just like in the deuce, court you have three options on the ad,side of the court you got the down the, middle serve you got the body serve and,the toughest one for a right-hander the,out wide SERP now the difference between, this serve on the deuce side of the, court and the ad side the court I feel, like in the deuce side of the court for,a right hander you can hit the serve, much flatter do you feel like on this, side you have to put a lot more slice, absolutely I feel that if I want to,serve consistently at the T here I need, that spin for that extra control show me,a good slice down the middle,oh that's a good serve right there see, like when I go for the slice to on on,this side you might feel the toss just a,little slightly to the right so you can, really see how I'm slicing it it's just, like in the deuce court the same serve, that you're hitting the short out wide, one you need to do a little bit on the,add middle serve you got to put that, little short slice into it I was like to,Bester's I've hit all week all right,Julie oh there's a good body serve you, know a pretty good female that used to,like the middle serve on the ad side, she'd set her forehand up she said every, time I had a good serve in the middle it,was Steffi Graf she'd hit that good hard, serve in the middle she feel like the, person have no angle and then she goes, that's it I'm hitting the forehand,if I'm hitting a forehand I'm in great, shape okay now I'm going to show you the, toughest one for some reason my whole, career I was a sucker for going wide I,always like to hit this one under, pressure, probably guys knew it but I felt like if,I could hit the hard flat one out wide, maybe I could sneak serve and volley, remember on this serve this is the, higher part of the net so you got to get,a little more height when you're going,to the body or you're going down the, middle it's the lower part of the,so remember when you're going wide the,net is six inches higher you need a,little more

How to Attack the Tennis Net

How to Attack the Tennis Net

I do it on Brad Gilbert and welcome to,Sports cool we are working on attacking, the net there's two ways to really look,at it there's an old school and there's,new school a lot of the modern pros, today like Agassi Nadal guys like that, when they see a short ball they're,thinking about finishing the point let's,get to most of you at home the club, players if you're thinking about, finishing the point with the attack shot, you're going to miss at least five out,of ten and if you're missing five out of,ten you're giving away way too many, points in my ear, guys like Vitas Gerulaitis John McEnroe, they would float the approach they would, slice it and when you slice the approach,or not hit it as hard, you give yourself a little more time to,get to the net and the more time that, you have to get to the net the more time, you have to cut off some angles, obviously if you have great skills go,ahead and go for it but if you're like,me and most Club players and you don't,have the overwhelming sending Western, grips and you can't bone crush it with, spin hit the ball with slice or hit the, ball safe and solid and come in and, cover down the line and try to get to,closes and as you can remember you'll,probably have to add a couple of volleys, but that's old-school for you,and don't forget that here on sport, school you can use your own remote to,stop pause rewind and fast-forward any,of the training techniques that we are, demonstrating this means you are in,total control you can learn at your own, pace, you've done your hard work now it's time,to attack the net with the approach ah I,grew up in the 70s and 80s work the, approach at was a nice set up shot and,you come in and do your work with a net,now me as a coach I'm telling you when, you have a short ball especially if,you're a five-o player or pro player you,rip it and you come in but for club, players who not have exceptional racket, head speed and can't get that amazing, spin once again maybe you don't want to,go for so much you don't want to get, that big eyes you want to hit safe and, solid give yourself four feet of margin,of error and get to net because remember,a lot of club players do not pass like, professionals so if you're a club player, give yourself that nice margin of error, and don't take the shot for granted and, remember move your feet on it all right, guys give me a couple oh I hit over back,in I didn't used to be able to do that, see I'm more old school where I would, tend to slice the back in approach but,all the modern players are saying what, the heck is that,I give me a forehead, see I put a little more pace on that, because that's the shot my bigger shot, see when you have a big forehand you, want to go for that forehand but once, again give yourself house see how I hit, that shot I gave myself a nice 4-foot,margin of error I didn't exactly try to,hit a winner the pros will probably try,to hit a winner on that but cub players, stay solid stay comfortable and try to,make that shot nine out of ten times, you're gonna win a heck of a lot of,points, now you've hit the solid approach, there's still more work to be done as,you hit the approach I call this area, here the home base where you do your, split set you want to kind of move, forward and do that little split step as,you watch your opponent that's when you, keep moving forward but you want to,avoid doing a lot of us do at the club, player level we hit that approach and we,literally are running out of control, forgetting about the split step and when, you hit the volley you have no balance, and you're just out of control, you have no base nothing I heard this, when I first turned pro when I was 20,years old all Australians have covered, down the line on their passport that's,why you never see an Aussie get passed, down the line they always hug down the, line because they always feel like it's,easier to stick your racket out and, guard cross-court so remember when you,hit the heavy approach and then I'm,gonna show you split set,and then I want to move forward on the, split step you do that little hop split, step the reason why you want to do that, little hop split it's for your balance, and kind of figure out gauge what your, opponent's gonna do if you literally, sprint in out of control he could either,Lobby it or pass you've given up,your advantage so remember after you hit,the good approach your balance is so key,and cover down the line let's see if we,can do one good one here see he gave me,one hanging so that was pretty easy but, remember the little split step think, about covering down the line force and, then moving forward that's the key to a,good split step, for you club players out there most of,us cannot put away the first volley like, the pro so there's still more work to be,done so after you've done your split, step in you hit your volley you don't,want to stay here you want to try to,move forward so you catch the next one, close to the net so you have a chance to,put away the ball remember the key to is,keeping good technique not getting too, excited

Brad Gilbert checks in with Live @ Wimbledon

yes thank you i've now been joined by,brad gilbert who's coached several, players in the past now working mainly, for espn it would be great just to look, ahead to the men's quarterfinals with, you tomorrow and of course it was known, about djokovic that came through earlier,on alongside kevin anderson first of all, what did you make of the challenge that,he faced against the big south african, well the first week i mean novak was, just rolling and then anderson played, tremendous tennis i still can't believe,he won that second set breaker last, night from 4-0 down, but when they stopped last night you got,the feeling if they would have played it,through that joker would have crushed, him last night but anderson came out, today and really tested him but to me,joker will get better because of that, match well he's now reached his seventh, consecutive quarterfinal andy murray has, done one better than him because he's,reached his eighth consecutive but just,a sign that novak djokovic just playing,as well as he ever has on the grass here,at wimbledon well how about 25,consecutive quarterfinals that he's made, overall, chillich who played the winner of it,what's he thinking he's o12 against, joker and he was 5-1 against anderson,he's thinking come on anderson win this, but,to me i i obviously think that what, happened at the french open, everyone was expecting novak to win it,and you know, how quickly would he be able to put that, behind him and i think that that's where, the coaching now where boris is going to,have to you know do his best coaching, how do we put that past him how do we,focus on re-upping and winning this, tournament well and my hotel really been, interesting actually wouldn't it see his, reactions watching that five-setter,between anderson and djokovic but of,course he came through for his first, taste of grand slam success at the us,open last year made it to the, quarterfinals stage as he has last year, and this year at wimbledon do you think,he can challenge novak more than anyone, tomorrow,um,of the four quarter finals there's no,doubt that the battle of the one-handers,verwinka gasquet is the most open match, the o12 you know, sticks out and and to me chillich you, know didn't start his year until indian, wells he had been you know struggling, physically, and i think getting to the round of 16,helped turn his year around second year,in the royal quarters but the big thing,is tomorrow wednesday i'm a weather guy,i check the weather all the time i go to,all the different sites it will be by,far the windiest day of the tournament, tomorrow we will have wind in the high,20s,so wind is an equalizer, but still if tillage has any chance,he needs to have a great servant day he,needs to channel his gorn even ease of,his hitchcock he needs to be able to,drop 25 30 aces and figure out what, didn't happen in those 12 and what can, happen tomorrow differently well you, mentioned the varinka gasket match the, second of the men's quarter finals, gasket of course never been to this, stage since reaching the semifinals in,2007 many people wouldn't have picked, him to perhaps reach this stage this, year but a fantastic comeback against, nick curios yesterday and he seems to be,playing some great tennis but so tough,to come through against as you say for, rinker now a two-time grand slam, champion and playing with a new, confidence well the stanimal is a,different guy now at 30 years old what's,amazing that up 130 1's 29,and they've only played twice they must, have played a couple hundred tournaments, together but only twice and the biggest, thing for me you know i'm a numbers guy, look at things before the match, yesterday gasquet 17 times in his career, had gotten to the round of 16 15 times,he lost i feel like when gasquet plays, against you know the big three when he,plays against federer when he plays, against nadal and you saw him play joker,at the french i think he has a defeated, attitude, against animal i think he'll have a,better attitude and think he has a,better chance and he'll want to do as,much as he can back in the backhand, forehand affair he's got a sneaky serve,i think of the the four if you're going,to tell me where an upset's going to,come from it's that one because i just,on the bottom half of the draw you can, bank it murray's playing federer friday, second match on you can write them both,in straight sets that's 100 i already, got it written in my program and i,guarantee you it's the second match on,friday no question about it jamie murray,in the semis the doubles andy sam is the, singles i don't think two brothers have, ever been in the semis of two different, events in the open year period they're,semis you've called it i love it from, brad gilbert you mentioned andy murray, and i don't think he would ever have, expected to be facing an unseeded, opponent in the quarter-finals which he,now does in the shape of vasec possibly, who's had an unbelievable championships,of course tasted success here last year, winning the men's doubles titles, alongside jack so

how you doing I'm Brad Gilbert and, welcome to sports school we're gonna, work on my favorite shot to work on the, violets there's two really good ways to,work on the volley, when I was a kid I used to get so many, volleys on the wall believe it or not,the wall won't miss and my coaches, always somebody get down below the net,and punch it get down and punch it the, second is when you have somebody that, can feed you some volleys so you get, down and you really work on your short, technique and punching it those are two, good ways to work on your violet if,you're gonna spend a lot of time up with, the net you're gonna hit plenty of,overheads,I got a couple of drills to make your, shot what it should be it's a tough shot, treat it like it's a tough shot and, you'll make a lot more of them and don't,forget that here on sports school you,can use your own remote to stop pause, rewind and fast-forward any of the, training techniques that we are, demonstrating this means you are in,total control you can learn at your own, pace,a couple drills I like to work with, especially on my forehand volley as I,like to have somebody feed me the ball, really hard on the forehand volley so I,can get down low and punch it and you, need really good technique when the ball,is hit hard to the biggest don't though, for a lot of club players guys come up,to here and they say you know what hit,me some volleys now and they sit there, she's on volleying great isn't this easy, but how often you're gonna get to here I,always say practice where you're going,to volley which is around the service, line if you're standing here you're,going to get lobbed go back to the, service line and you're gonna do a lot, better volley all right you're up Adrian,he's gonna hit a couple hard ones right, there let's see one the hard ball right, here you got to keep the swing simple, and punch it keep moving all right on,those the key on all those balls when, the balls get hard to you you want to,get down as low as you can get the Shelf, down and it's almost like a karate chop, move as soon as you hit don't stare at,it get right back in your stance punch,it and punch out of the stance don't,punch it and stay there and look at your, shot it might come back the other one is,that really softball the floater that, high hanging volley that all of us tend,to get big eyes on and most of us like,to wait for the ball to come to us then, that becomes a much tougher shot the, floater,I call it go get the ball as soon as you,see it you get closer to cutting it off, you're closer to winning the point, alrighty let's look a couple of floaters, okay go get it soon as you see it flows, you get closer to the neck the closer, you get to the net the easier this shot,is very nice a lot of the ladies they, like to take that ball without moving, and it makes it a lot tougher shot much, better on that ball right there if you, don't move, you tend to take a big swing the shot, gets more difficult alright and then, this is a good drill when you move move, them both together one hard one one, floater, see how close I got to the net right, there, good about six of those three each from, the high one three ones getting down, those are the keys to a really good, forehand volley keep your head you don't,need any armor you'll be fine now we're,gonna work on the backhand volley most, club players and kids at home think this,is the much tougher side than the, forehand side I actually think the, opposite it's the much easier side it's,the cleaner swing of the two to hit the,key to the backhand volley is that early, shoulder preparation and stepping in and,it's like a good karate chop you step in,and you go boom but most of us the big, problem for the backhand volley they, start moving in here you ask can you, want to feed me one this is the real, don't where they break the plane at the, wrist they go like this now this is a,clean swing notice how I punched it like,a karate chop stay low and really punch, through it and remember on the backhand, volley you never want to break the plane,of the wrist almost like a windshield, wiper going like this you want to stay, low turn the shoulders and really punch,it and you know a lot of the power comes, from your legs and your butt so remember, stay low punch it and don't break the, plane of your wrist that's the key to a,good backhand volley I'd like to do the, same two drills on the backhand volley,as I did on the forehand volley where, you work on the high floater remember, going to get it and then the hard one, which teaches you the good technique, getting down low and punching it with a,karate chop you know who had the best, backhand volley ever saw John McEnroe,God never missed one unfortunately every, time he played me it was money let's see, what you got Adrian, nice and hard good simple swing moving, your feet that's it keep moving nice, punch, now you guys keep moving the feet that's,it excellent, one more excellent come on yeah you got,a little more all right Julie keep, moving forward the closer you are to,getting the ball the
