and this is how the app is,going to work,so you could scroll up right now i'm on,one and i could scroll up to see the,next person and the next person and so,on so right here that's the very first,page once you're logged in you can,instantly start watching everybody's,videos and there are so so many videos,on tiktok this is one of the most random,apps i've ever been on you open up the,app on your phone and then it will take,you to a 15 second video and that 15,second video will just loop if you swipe,up it will take you to the next one so,on and so on and so on and it's a bit of,a lotto when it comes to what you'll,land on when you swipe up because it,really could be anything now the more,time you spend on the app the more you,will tap into the algorithm so it will,start to show you videos that are,related to stuff that you've liked and,engaged with but apart from that it,really is just a,smorgasbord of weird,creative amazing bizarre videos i've,ever come across okay now let's talk,trends so look there are definitely,trends on tick tock and just to name a,few there is the adele trend,there's another one where you use a,finger gun,now lip syncing is a huge part of tiktok,it's what a lot of people use it for,whether that's lip syncing to a song or,lip syncing to a quote from a film,and there are also some really creative,people on there there are artists there,are people that dance it's just a really,random app full of really random things,so as a consumer there's plenty of,content for you to sit there and watch,but as a creator what can we do what,kind of videos can we upload to tik tok,now they make it incredibly easy to,shoot edit and upload a video all within,that app there's a huge archive of music,to choose from and there are different,video effects you can add to your,footage but what's it like to use this,app as a video creator well i thought,i'd find out now once i set up an,account i thought i'd upload my first,video now i put no thought into this,just to be really clear i literally,uploaded the first video that i found on,my phone you definitely shouldn't be,here,health and safety regulations,and within a week that video had over 50,000 views which was just,insane to me just as an example let's,compare tick tock to youtube okay i,upload a 15 second video on my phone and,it gets 50 000 views look at the views,on this video as an experiment okay but,it's nowhere near 50 000 views right,getting that amount of views is actually,really difficult i mean i've set up a,light i've set up a camera on a tripod,i've got a microphone i'm going to have,to edit this footage and not load it but,with tick tock i upload a video 15,seconds long which is just hanging,around on my phone and i get 50 000,views so with the first video getting so,many views i thought i'd experiment and,upload some more so in the last week,i've uploaded six videos and as you can,see they've had varying degrees of,success so my first video as i mentioned,did pretty well it got 59 000 views i,then uploaded two more videos videos,that you would have seen on this channel,before i used these as facebook profile,videos they didn't do very well one only,got 567 views the other one got 147 i,then uploaded another video that also,did terribly 128 views i then uploaded,another one that did pretty well that,got over 8 000 views but then i created,a video specifically for tick tock the,rest of these videos were just videos,that i had sat on my phone and that,video i used one of the trending,hashtags it was the finger gun and that,got over 23 000 views by being on tick,tock for just one week i managed to get,over 93 000 views which is just mental,so look i've got to say i'm really,impressed with tic toc i guess to sum it,up you could say minimal effort maximum,results if you're looking to get eyes on,your content and to grow a following,quickly then honestly tiktok could be,one of the easiest and quickest ways pre-made.,And I recorded, I'm like, okay, press these buttons.,And we'll make it look like you just made it in two minutes.,I need a producer tag,Okay, what do you want it to be?,Ayo mama on the beat.,Within hours the video was racking up millions of views.,So, Jake made a few more videos featuring his mom,,but with one small tweak.,My brother had the idea, he was like,,yo, what if we like put a TikTok like in front of the phone and we filmed it...,Hey mom.,Have you ever heard this song before?,The format was simple but clever:,Jake would mashup songs on TikTok that were already going million.,It's starting at a million.,At the time, Jake didn’t even have a manager.,But he knew he needed one fast.,We have these fifteen seconds, we have labels calling us...,What do we do?,That was actually when I got on the phone with my now manager,and he was like “Call me, right now!”,He was like, "Hey, can you finish this song in 24 hours?",Clearing the “Hoody Baby” sample ended up taking a few days.,By the time we got it out, it was at 5 million videos.,It ended up going to 15 million.,If you compound all the views of all the 15 million videos,,it's like over 9 Billion views.,This is just the beginning of Jake’s story.,But what makes it so interesting isn't how dramatic it is,,but how often stories just like his occurred in 2020.,Over the last few months I’ve been working with The Pudding,to put experiences like Jake’s into perspective.,We dug into the data and stories behind dozens of emerging artists’ TikTok hits.,To figure out what internet fame actually means for new music artists.,It turns out, this is way more than a story about algorithms or going viral.,It’s a story about the longstanding tug-of-war between,artists, platforms, and music industry giants.,You might be surprised who’s winning.,If I were to review this project, I'd probably never do it again.,That is Matt Daniels, a journalist at The Pudding,where he digs into culture stories through data.,In the Fall of 2021, we started a project that turned into what Matt describes as...,One of the hardest data projects I've ever worked on.,It seemed simple on paper:,create a data set of Indie and DIY artist that went viral on TikTok in 2020,and determine if that virality was enough to change the outlook of their career.,Because it really was their first major, major exposure,to a huge fan base on the internet.,But, there were a few big problems right from the start.,The biggest was there wasn’t a useful data set,of the most popular songs on TikTok from 2020.,We banged our head against the wall,trying to figure out “how do we reconstruct charts from TikTok?".,It turns out, there’s a lot of playlists on Spotify that compile viral TikTok hits.,And there’s also this tool called Chartmetric.,Which among other things captures historical data of those playlists,and tracks what songs have been added and subtracted to them and when.,So, we got to work.,And pulled all of the songs from as many playlists as we could find,that were added between January and December 2020.,Then we ranked the songs by their popularity on TikTok,,filtering out any that got fewer than 100,000 posts.,Which brought us down to about 1500 songs that went viral in 2020.,The biggest challenge I would say is once we had our arms,wrapped around these 1500 songs,making the decision of, is this an established artist,that had a TikTok hit,or is this the artist's big break?,And a big break is a very subjective decision.,A lot of the artists in this list were obviously very established.,Cardi B going viral on TikTok is not particularly impressive,versus somebody who has never released a song before.,So we went back to Chartmetric to dig into more data points,behind these songs and the artists that made them.,Including their Spotify monthly listeners, the number of times they've been playlisted,,the number of tracks they've released.,Which made it a lot easier to decide: did this so,there's four category of videos we're,gonna break down first one is videos,getting between zero to twenty thousand,views second is video is getting between,20 to 100 000 views then a hundred,thousand two million and last but not,least at a million plus now why are we,looking at August 50s because August 5th,is when I uploaded a video criticizing,the one organization the one name you,cannot criticize on Tick Tock viewership,dropped 10 200 x you'll see 100x when I,show it to you and daily followership,used to be 50 000 to 75 followers on The,Tick Tock for three months straight,every month to down to three to five,thousand followers on a monthly basis so,when you look at the first round June 7,to August 5th here's what happened,videos between zero to twenty thousand,views were 99. videos between 20 to 100,000 views for 111 102 million 45 videos,got over a hundred thousand two million,views and nine videos got over a million,views now keep in mind this is when the,account was smaller I only had forty,thousand followers or eighty thousand,followers a hundred thousand followers,so I'm getting a million plus views on,videos on a very small account that I,just started because I didn't really,trust Tick Tock yet then boom on August,5th I upload a video criticizing China,this is what the video looked like,here's what the video was I put this,video up
