Schools on guard after violent threats on TikTok

Schools on guard after violent threats on TikTok

right now school districts across South,Florida and the country are on high, alert staff parents and law enforcement, say they are concerned about apparent, threats being made on social media and,it's all reportedly a part of a tick, tock trip and as a result you can see, more law enforcement on local campuses, today local 10's land Rojan joining us,live to explain Liam, and I want to be clear the school that,I'm live in front of right now has not, been the target of any specific threat,it is just one of many many schools both,in Miami-Dade and Broward County as you, mentioned no local schools have been, shut down because of these generic, threats that have been put on Tick Tock, but there are schools across the country, that are having to change the way they, operate today whether it be no backpacks,to school shutting their doors or adding, increased security because of what, they're seeing,a generalized threat of violence to,schools posted on the social media app,Tick Tock is prompting increased safety, measures even in school closures across, the country here at home leaders at,Miami-Dade and Broward School Districts, say schools will remain open with added, patrols this email sent to Broward, parents late Friday reads in part quote, while this threat did not originate, locally and is not believed to be,credible there will be increased law, enforcement presence across our schools, district administrators and staff will, also have increased vigilance Miami-Dade,County Public Schools made a similar, statement as well citing additional, police presence and vigilance Tick Tock, addressed the threats saying quote we,handle even rumored threats with utmost, seriousness which is why we're working, with law enforcement to look into, warnings about potential violence at,schools even though we have not found, evidence of such threats originating or,spreading via Tick Tock this comes on,the heels of Thursday's arrest of a 13,year old girl who now faces 10 felony, charges for allegedly posting this, threat to 10 local schools on Instagram, several other threats of violence and, arrests of teens have preceded it just, this year officials urging parents to,get involved in fighting this trend we,really need to practice additional, conversations with the community and, engage parents in joining us in creating,a new narrative for kids and warning, parents that making threats like these, carry serious lifelong consequences, these are felony charges this isn't a,misdemeanor it isn't a citation it's not, even a warning these are felony criminal, charges that will stay with them for the, rest of their life, and on top of those criminal charges, that come to anyone any teen any student, who makes these types of threats this is,extremely disruptive to the school day,to the way School operates to the, education process and the effects come, not only to the students themselves but, also to the teachers the parents of the, kids that are going to school every day,we've spoken to students in the past who,say this is affecting their mental, health of course bringing back painful, memories of school shootings, reporting live in Pinecrest Lee and, local 10 News

Viral 'devious licks' TikTok challenge encourages kids to steal from school

Viral 'devious licks' TikTok challenge encourages kids to steal from school

JUDY WOODRUFF: It was just last month that a theme  went viral on the social media platform TikTok,  ,leading to widespread damage  in schools across the country.,Known as the Devious Licks challenge,  it has encouraged students to record  ,a video of themselves stealing  or vandalizing school property,  ,everything from bathroom soap dispensers  and exit signs to fire extinguishers, and  ,amounting to untold thousands of dollars' worth  of damage, and then posting the video on TikTok.,Our Student Reporting Labs network asked  young people And school staff about this trend  ,and the effects on school communities.,ANDREA SALAZAR LOPEZ, Student: The first time  I saw the Devious Lick challenge was on my  ,For You page. This kid was running through  the halls with this principal's car door.  ,I was like, what's happening? What's going on?  What are people trying to prove with doing this?,ALEX HELTON, Teacher: My classroom had pretty  much been destroyed. There was like posters  ,tore off the wall. The kids had taken books that  I'd personally bought. And they took the books  ,and they, like, took them, took a paper cutter,  and, like, cut the covers and pages of the books.,MOHAMMED MUSAED, Student: A couple kids decided  it would be funny to steal A fire hydrant.,MASON PANTEL, Student: At my school,  ,people are stealing the most obscure  things, like exit signs, stall doors.,DAKOTA HENDREN, Student: Well, at my school, I  know that some people have taken soap dispensers,  ,and paper towel dispensers. And, really recently,  ,I heard that someone tried  to take a water fountain.,ELIZABETH JEFFERSON, Student: I have to  bring hand sanitizer because the second-floor  ,soap for the girls' restroom is gone.,KENNEDY SCOTT, Student: Our school has  decided to close the bathrooms down  ,and only open one bathroom for each gender,  so that they can monitor the bathroom.,JOHNATHAN RIGGINS, Student: I like a  fun time, but this is pretty insane.,ALEX HELTON: To be completely  honest, from the teacher perspective,  ,that just kill's a person's spirit,  to see that level of disrespect.,LUCAS YOO, Student: I kind of  wanted to participate in it,  ,but at the same time, I know the consequences that  come with it. And taking things from my school  ,would probably not be the best idea,  because there's a lot of punishments.,CLARISSA MACK, Security Guard: Students that are  participating in Devious Licks, they are receiving  ,suspensions all the way up to expulsions.,QUINN BLACKWELL, Student: No matter the trend,  no matter if it's vandalism or theft or doing  ,a dance, I think kids will do what they  can to get their five seconds of fame.,TYANNA NELSON, Student: One person's  going to do something and they get  ,viral from it or something, so then somebody  else is going to want to follow along.,MAN: It'll die off within a couple weeks, but the  impact and the destruction, it's going to last.,JOSEPH RODRIGUEZ, Technology  Coordinator: Once you start liking stuff,  ,you guys hear the term algorithm  thrown out a lot, but, basically,  ,it just feeds you more of what you're  already interested in and what you like.,So, essentially, it's just going to keep going  and keep happening because kids are going to  ,see more of it and think, oh, this is going  to make it good. This is all I'm seeing now.,ANDREA SALAZAR LOPEZ: Schools already have  a small budget to begin with to be spending  ,money on fixing damages. If this is the  way we want to protest the school system,  ,it's making it really hard for  people to take us seriously.,JUDY WOODRUFF: Taking a trend too far, and it's  good to see so many students recognize that.,Meantime, a U.S. Senate committee will hold  a hearing tomorrow on TikTok and other social  ,media apps, such as Instagram and Snapchat,  where lawmakers will examine the pressures and  ,risks for children, teens and young adults,  who are increasingly using these apps.

CCSD Trustees to address ongoing school violence during special meeting

violence in clark county schools leaders, set to address concerns over an uptick,in fights three trustees requested that, meeting happen tomorrow kim passoth live,or it's going to take place at ccsd's,building on flamingo, yeah so one week ago tonight we were, here as students went before the school, board and shared their stories of,violence and bullying in their school, pleading with the district to take, action those students high schoolers all,the way down to elementary school kids, tonight we hear from a mom of a second, grader who says that her student was, stabbed in class just yesterday, nobody called 9-1-1 nobody called me,when she was stabbed it was like, fate i went in to pick them up early, and she was in the middle of the office, bleeding from her leg mom ashley, braverman says she is stunned it has, come to this,in her daughter's second grade classroom,at mark fine elementary a wood pencil, stabbed into her daughter's thigh the, lead breaking off inside looked at me,and said mommy he stabbed me and i,didn't even have to ask i knew what, happened and i immediately dialed 9-1-1,braverman says her eight-year-old,daughter has been one classmate's target, all school year within the first week of,school she was coming home and letting,my husband and i know that there was a,boy, you know picking on her in class at,first she didn't think it was a big deal, maybe the boy had a schoolyard crush but, that quickly changed as the year, continued on the bullying progressed, into emotional abuse, and then physical assaults where she, would come home with scratches on her,arm marks on her face, this mom claims she never got reports, from the school on what happened my,husband and i every time it happened we,would make a report we would either call, the school or we would go in and talk to,the front office or speak to the teacher, and they would assure us that something, would be done that they would take care,of it she believes the stabbing could, easily have been prevented, they have done nothing nothing has been, done she's supposed to be protected the, school told her the aggressor has been, moved to another class, still her daughter is nervous about, seeing him on the playground they gave,me a student safety plan which at this, point means nothing to me because her, safety has already been jeopardized she, believes moving the bully to another, classroom is putting a band-aid on the, problem and worries he will find a new, target that won't seek help from their, parents i wonder, how many other parents aren't getting, information on their children how many, other parents don't know that their kid,is being hurt or bullied or targeted, and we did reach out to the district for,a statement about what happened here and,to find out what happened to the other, student that is involved here they sent,us this statement saying quote ccsd, investigates every reported case of,bullying and takes appropriate action we,are unable to discuss individual student, disciplinary matters due to privacy laws, however in general students can face, administrative disciplinary action at,school or be referred to law enforcement, for possible criminal prosecution, depending on the severity of the matter, reporting live tonight kim passoth fox 5,news local las vegas, tomorrow's special board meeting, starting at 8 a.m we're gonna have live, coverage on our air tomorrow morning, make sure to download our free fox 5 app,so you can be the first to know about, the breaking news and stream our, newscasts live

Parents, students and law enforcement on high alert after TikTok videos threatening school violence

Parents, students and law enforcement on high alert after TikTok videos threatening school violence

tonight a vague, viral tick-tock trend is warning of,school shootings and it's causing a lot,of concern as you can imagine nationwide, those posts point to acts of violence, that were supposed to happen today it's,scary you know police say that at this, point there is no evidence that the, threats are credible but law enforcement,in shelby county they did step up,patrols today at schools as their, investigation into these threats, continue i mean you have to you have no,choice fox 13's mandy rock is live in,memphis for us mandy some of these, videos have been shared thousands of,times you found out, yeah that's right they have and it just, takes a quick search to find hundreds of,those videos on tick tock warning of,acts of violence in schools today, although there are no direct threats to,schools in the mid-south both the, memphis police department and the shelby, county sheriff's office said they're,taking extra precautions,we need to,ask our children you know what do they, what do they think what's going through, their head as a mother of six kiana, mcgahey is familiar with threats of,violence against schools, that's part of the reason she decided to,keep her kids at home this year when, they first got in school i saw the, shooting with the, student and you know after they seen it,too they was kind of scared but i don't,want to go to school so,i decided to teach them at home now, warnings of school shootings are going, viral on tick-tock look up december 17,2021 here's an example of a video, warning of violence supposed to take, place on december 17th,the warnings are vague with no specific, location but they've been shared and, seen thousands of times well the, majority we're seeing is based, from social media sources, and we treat every one of them, just like it's a valid threat lieutenant, david ballard with the shelby county, sheriff's office said he's not aware of,any specific or direct threats against, schools in shelby county but officers, were sent to patrol schools across the, area friday as a precaution,as law enforcement investigates where, the threats came from lieutenant ballard, urges people to engage with their, children and check their social media, just like we say if you see something, say something if you hear something say, something, because you know under tca there is a,provision that if you do know of a,school threat or threats of violence you, have a duty to to report that to the, school and the law enforcement that, covers that school, and i also heard back from scs about the, threats today they sent me this, statement it reads we are aware of,threatening social media posts, circulating across the country while no,specific school has been named local law, enforcement and scs security are, investigating the post as extra, precaution more officers are on scs, school campuses to ensure the safety of,all students and staff live in memphis, mandy rock fox 13 news, thank you so much mandy you know schools, across the country are responding to,these threats that have been posted on,tick tock at least six states are, strengthening security measures at their, schools after the posts were made about, possible school violence we're talking, about shootings and bomb threats the, threats followed the oxford township, michigan school shooting from last month, where four students were killed

Triad schools proactive against TikTok school trend | Four 2 Five

Triad schools proactive against TikTok school trend | Four 2 Five

friday and aren't they all fine uh this,is eric children with stacy spivey and, lauren coleman hey y'all, yeah we have made it guys yes,it's a friday before christmas eve one, week out i still need to prepare for, christmas, girl, well thank you all for watching the four,to five right here on news two fire, stick roku and the news 2 app as well, and we're also on facebook so join the, conversation our big story today schools, around the triad and the nation, are stepping up security for social, media threats that appear to have gone, viral on tick tock no specific threat, has been made to any one school but it,appears the trend is to call some kind,of threat into these schools right now,no school district or law enforcement, office believes the threats are credible, all of our districts are being proactive, though and letting parents know they're,aware of this trend but it is still safe,to send kids to school one district,winston-salem forsyth county schools, announced yesterday their district will, join other schools across the state and,a new anonymous reporting system called, say something district officials say the, program helps train staff and students, about the red flags to look out for and, someone who could pose a threat to,themselves or others the system allows, people to report concerns to school, leaders and law enforcement anonymously, through a crisis center monitored 24 7.,people can report threats through the, school's mobile app website or the, hotline that hotline number is,1-844-572-9669,the district's decision to participate,in this program was not because of the, tick tock trend threats happening other, triad school districts also participate,in this program like yadkin and surry, county schools,i mean i think in this, age of social media and when we hear, something like this you just it's one of,those things where you got to pay, attention you know you've got to really, take things seriously whether you know,if there's an actual threat or not i,think it just adds on another layer of,anxiety you know we're in the pandemic, with covid kids have had to change the,way they learn and now this and as a,parent i would think you put your kid in,school for them to be in a safe place, but now you're hearing about all these, different threats on social media it's,just another concern to worry about i,just don't understand like how is this, trendy to want to do something like this,at school,i don't get where that's coming from you, know i feel like it was it a few months, ago where this the kids it was a trend, from tick tock to go and like destroy, the bathrooms that yeah yeah they're,really feces everywhere yeah it was just, disgusting and like what that's that's,not cool it should not be cool it needs,to stop and it's like why does, everything have to be so violent if you, want something to trend why not to be a,cool dancer, why does it have to be anything that, puts anyone in danger there's nothing, there's nothing fun about that and it's,criminal activity like you can get in a,lot of trouble for this i said i think,of,you know everybody knows that person, that loves to be the bearer of news, whether it's good or bad you know the,one that always like will call you like,i know some people have relatives like,oh no it's amp so and so it's always, going to call me i think those are the, people that share these things and send,it off because they want to be the one,to show that whether it's good or bad in,this case it could be horrible i think,it goes back to what we were saying, yesterday on the 45 i think parents just, really have to get more involved in what, their children are doing on social media, and just really monitor that because, this is really just starting to get out,of hand, really is,big job for parents, well we do talk about it a lot these, students needing an outlet or a place to,feel like they belong for many it's,sports this is something those with the,winston-salem open noticed and chose to,invest 25 thousand dollars into middle, school sports, the winston-salem open serving good news, this holiday season i was very shocked, the tournament's largest donation in,history,25-thousand dollars going to,winston-salem forsyth county schools, middle school athletics we're providing, the foundation for these kids to be,successful in that space tournament, director jeff ryan credits chairman dawn, flo for wanting to focus on middle, school sports he says it's not tied to a,particular sport but just to help kids,be active young folks are at a critical, age and athletics can really provide a,meaningful outlet for them assistant, athletic director for winston-salem,forsyth county schools alexis mccoy says, this is crucial 16 middle schools in the, district have sports like baseball, softball basketball volleyball and, cheerleading so this money will directly, benefit those programs i think with this, donation it's going to help us reach out,to more kids that might be struggling, who need, athletics more than athletics needs them,a win for this community choosing to,in

Prisoners Are Going Viral on TikTok

Prisoners Are Going Viral on TikTok

welcome,to prison tick tock this is a steak, stove, made out of a melted hot pot so we make, our hot water in the morning for our, coffee, the lives of incarcerated people that, were once hidden are now going viral, thanks to the younger generation, people became so hyped up about them, they get to see what it's like behind, the wall it's like a whole nother world, kevin smith is one of dozens of people, who have posted their prison experiences,on the platform, now we're seeing the daily meals that, was a good trade that i posted, there's trays that are in there that are,so gross like,it'll run away from you before you eat,it the minimal outdoor time, and the how to's for prison life hacks, like heating up hot water,i mean that's literally how we had to,make our water because they don't have, hot water spigots or anything, everything on canteen that they do sell, requires to be cooked so,the only way to cook it is to macgyver,or something and while cell phone, footage from prisons has found its way,on social media before, people share this man these tick tocks, are confronting misconceptions of prison, life i wanted to show people what it was, like inside, like behind the wall and there's not all,bad people in there, due to prisons being hidden and removed, from society mass incarceration in the,u.s is vastly misunderstood, with entertainment perpetuating ideas of,rowdy prison life, and those incarcerated drawn up as,soulless criminals who are all dangerous,to society, anger management controlling the savage, beast, inside you but tiktok is challenging, that, people on the outside are seeing people,on the inside as people, bianca tylek is the founder and, executive director of worth rises a,national criminal justice advocacy, organization, working to end the exploitation of,people that it targets so i always knew, that i wanted to at some point work on,criminal justice issues, she says tick-tock is especially showing, the realities of a younger generation, that is incarcerated which is resonating, with other tiktok users,as people many times we're young as,people who are charismatic,as people who experience joy and pain, and all of the same sentiments that we,do every day and i think that's really, really critical,it's giving people the chance to ask all, sorts of questions about prison life, with one being the most common, how do they have cell phones in the, first place cell phones are contraband,in prisons, lawmakers stress their potential danger,to facilitate crimes, there have been some instances where, contraband cell phones were used to,threaten state senators, blackmail civilians for money as well as,extort other inmates loved ones, yet they still have made their way past, prison walls in the thousands, don't get me wrong there is people that, will use it for bad you know like use it,to make hits on the outside stuff like, that, but if they were so worried about them, then the staff members wouldn't bring, them in,cell phone smuggling has been previously, caught on camera from being stuffed, inside sports balls and thrown over, fences to getting dropped by drones, but one way is by far the most common, the only way, that cell phones really make their way, into facilities,in a mass movement or way is through, staff, officers or kitchen workers or you know, people who deliver stuff, that's how it all comes in and the, punishment for being caught with one can, range from time and solitary confinement,to years added on to sentences,it's definitely risky but i figured if,it did go any type of viral or anything, that it would, probably take a while for them to catch,on and by that time i'd be gone, kevin only started posting about a week, before he was set to be released back in,april, knowing at that point it would be less, likely he'd get caught with the phone, and those we spoke to who are still in,prison asked to be recorded over the, phone for their safety, like j money i go through the extra, steps to make sure that i'm careful on,my end you know what i mean,in six years i got caught with two, phones and then this year they wrote me,up for being on chick chart,in 2018 almost 12 000 cell phones were, seized in mississippi prisons alone, cell phones are so pervasive that, lawmakers cannot stop the onslaught that,is coming in,so they're trying to stop their use in a,different way with the cell phone, jamming reform act, introduced by arkansas senator tom, cotton and south carolina senator, lindsey graham in 2019,the bill would allow state and federal, prisons to use phone jamming technology,to prevent cell phone usage, this technology is currently prohibited,by the fcc,the bill's motivation might not only be,to prevent crimes but also to keep, inhumane prison conditions hidden from, the public, the virality of tick-tock helps us,actually, see the thing that so many are trying to,hide from us,it's stuff that you don't get to see, every day nobody's used to being inside,of a prison cell or,just actually communicating with, prisoners, and that communication and insight has, made tick tocks from inside pris
