The TikTok Hand Sign That Saved A Teenager's Life

i'm sure you've all lost hours and hours,to scrolling through tiktok right i know,i have and perhaps some of it is a waste,of time but honestly with over 1 billion, users it can't all be that bad right, well in october 2021 a 61 year old man, kidnapped an american teenager and took, her across state lines and it would, probably take a miracle for her to,escape right luckily she liked to scroll, through social media too but how on,earth could tick-tock be any help in,that terrifying situation well try to,stop scrolling for a minute and listen,up because you're about to find out, leaving a bad home situation has always, been really dangerous but with the, lockdowns hitting in 2020 it became so,much harder like if you can't even leave, the house to make a phone call what the, heck do you do to get away or even, safely call someone for help i wouldn't,have thought turning to tick-tock would,be an answer but it can be so surprising,to see what else is on those videos no,not that i mean tick-tock has some, really great advice to use remember when, selecting your username and password you, never want to give out any personal, information, and then there's other good advice like, surviving the kind of crimes that we,cover on this channel all the time in,one case we covered i remember really, well a teenager called kara robinson, chamberlain got captured by a serial, killer she had to be really resourceful, and kept herself totally aware of her, surroundings and that's how she was able,to make her lucky escape in that video,we covered how she became a total tick, tock star and even went viral when she, talked about how she survived and then, she went even more viral with some, really great advice about how to get, away if it's zip ties basically pulling,it tight and um like kind of pushing, your arms apart really and i mean, there's always someone who might try and, grab a person who looks vulnerable this, means you have to act really fast make a,lot of noise and never let them take you,to a second location for example look at,this boy from utah last year a sketchy, person in a van stalked him offering him, candy for two whole blocks not far from, where he lived he ran really fast but, when he finally made it home his front, door was locked so he tried to drive the, creeps away, panic i picked up rocks and i started i,was holding him like this and i was, gonna throw him but luckily the boy was, able to get to a neighbor's house and, call the cops on those freaks yeah that,is so scary but in this case we're,covering now a teenager from north, carolina was taken by someone she and,her family already knew her parents, quickly declared her missing but after, two days nobody had seen or heard any, trace of her it must have been awful for, them but nobody had any idea where she,was who she was with or what was being, done to her,you know the worst cases we cover show, just how often the victims and survivors, already know or knew the person who, hurts them and here the teenager and her, kidnapper had known each other well all, thanks to being a part of a camping, community which she went too often with, her family because of her age and the, situation i don't think her name is,being released yet but i've learned that, this north carolina teenager had, willingly gone with her kidnapper at,first because you know he was a friend,no stranger danger there right but it,quickly got really scary for her he,actually threatened to harm her pet dog,if she tried to escape i'm guessing that, this happened at around the point where, the teenager wanted to get the heck out,of this guy's car look nobody hurts a,puppy on my watch so she really didn't,have a lot of choice but to do,everything that he wanted also this is a,smart thing to do once they've got you a,lot like kara robinson did she was, probably playing along to see if she, could you know lull him into a false, security and at least she wasn't locked,in a plastic box or tied up somewhere, else she still had some options all she,had to do was wait and then she could, make her move but he was probably a lot, bigger than she was so i bet by now, you're totally wondering just how was,tick-tock involved in this case, well about a year ago there was a viral, tick tock from the canadian women's,foundation and it was really useful it,showed the emergency hand signal to use, when you're not able to speak out loud,or if you don't want to leave a digital, trace of your message so like if the, abuser is within hearing range the hand, signal is a really great way to make a,friend aware that you need their help, have a look at this example in this, apparently very normal video a lady is,asking for her banana bread recipe, keeping it light you know i know your, mom is a great baker so i should be good, but then the whole meaning of this, friendly chat changes with the signal i,think that the woman's friend reacts, really well here she doesn't give, anything away about the true situation, but she obviously sees what's happening,so she can call the cops or at least, find a way

What’s Behind the TikTok Hand Signal for Domestic Violence | Need To Know

What’s Behind the TikTok Hand Signal for Domestic Violence | Need To Know

our generation has resorted to tick-tock,hand signals to save us from domestic, violence as our own officials blatantly, promote violence against women leaders, like aoc,i'm yunji kim and this is mtv news need,to know,on monday a 16 year old girl from north, carolina was rescued from an older man,who was holding her captive all thanks,to a distressed hand signal made popular,on tick tock after being held captive, for two days and taken across state, borders she was noticed by a driver in,kentucky as she waved the signal out the, window the driver recognized the gesture, meant to indicate domestic abuse and, called the cops who rescued the girl the,man is being charged with unlawful, imprisonment and child pornography the, signal was first developed by the, canadian women's foundation and media, agency juniper park tbwa at the, beginning of the pandemic as a way for, domestic violence victims to silently, show they need help on a video call it's,a discreet movement that involves, tucking the thumb into the open palm and, closing the other four fingers over it,tick-tock creators then started to use,the foundation's instructional footage, and the gesture went viral as isolation, has exacerbated domestic abuse there are,two other known cases and likely more, where women were saved from violent, situations thanks to the gesture, including one involving a popular, youtuber but as andrea gunraj vice, president of public engagement at the, canadian women's foundation told, buzzfeed the signal itself is not the, action the action is all of us being, aware of gender-based violence and being,non-judgmental responders we have to be,ready to respond in this case social, media was used to help save a young girl, but in our nation's capital twitter and, instagram are under scrutiny for, perpetuating violence against women this, week republican representative paul, gosar tweeted an anime video edited to,depict him violently killing, fellow representative alexandria,ocasio-cortez and attacking president, biden with a sword the depiction of the, killing of aoc a young woman of color is,by all means a misogynistic threat not a,silly cartoon as his office is claiming, especially during a time when gop, leaders are inciting violence in their, base including the january 6,insurrection where some attackers were, specifically seeking out women democrats, like aoc and nancy pelosi despite airing, this threat that was viewed over 3,million times congressman gosar is still,on the job after claiming it was just a,joke twitter and instagram allowed his, violent imagery to stay up but when, kathy griffin a comedian posted a 2017,photo of herself holding a bloody, rendering of donald trump's head she, said twitter locked her out of her, account and yesterday she further, claimed that she was fully investigated,by two federal agencies the secret, service and the u.s attorney's office, put on the no-fly list and the interpol, list lost all work to her cancelled due,to threats of violence there is a clear,gender-based double standard when it,comes to violent images and, accountability, this isn't the first time aoc has been, targeted under a gop administration, border patrol officers posted doctored, photos of aoc getting violently raped, and they remained employed, half of our nation's leaders are, perpetuating a culture that devalues, women's lives many young people are, calling for gosart to be fired and, representative ayanna presley tweeted, heinous attacks like these leveled at my,sister aoc perpetuate and normalize, violence against women a reality far too, common for a woman of color speaker, pelosi this white supremacist must be,expelled immediately it's no wonder that, young people need to turn to tick-tock,to help each other survive domestic, violence when our own officials are, promoting it and targeting the young, women leaders trying to protect us,it's a subculture aiming to preserve our, basic safety and should not exist in a,perfect world because we deserve better, than secret hand signals and cartoon, threats made at our expense,i'm yunji kim and that's what you need,to know, you

"TikTok" Hand Signal Saves Teen & Other Secret Signals

"TikTok" Hand Signal Saves Teen & Other Secret Signals

happy wednesday welcome back to the lord, and arts channel i'm john lorden thank, you so much for spending some time with,us here today, you know, several times over the past few years,i've heard of secret codes and it's,usually part of some, viral video or it spreads around on some, platform sometimes it's on facebook, and i always question is it,really reliable is it something that can,be helpful,in the real world or is this someone, that is,in just another way you know ticking up,views or accounts or likes, but this week,we had one of those codes pay off in a,big way and i think it's time that we,start talking a little bit more about, the other possible codes that are out, there just to make sure that everyone is,aware of these and especially with what, happened this past week i think, the public consciousness about this type,of notification, this secret way to ask for help, might be more important and even become,a more useful tool going forward if,there's some way that we can help, promote that i definitely want to be a,part of that so let's go ahead and look,at this story together hear about the, success story but then we're also going,to talk about some other codes, not just uh here in the u.s actually the,uk has been kind of on this for a while, let's go ahead and start with, the success story which, there's still some implications around, this story that make me very concerned, for a young teenage girl but thankfully, she's safe and hopefully getting all the, resources she needs to deal with, whatever really happened around this, story you're going to see the details, are not exactly deep but there's a very, and there's there's implied, information that what she went through, was probably pretty traumatic, here at wfla.com missing girl rescued, after using tick-tock hand gestures to,signal for help, now,i just want to kind of point out because, you know anytime you could put tick tock,in the title of an article it seems like, that's a very popular thing to do,is this hand gesture really developed by,tick tock no it's been developed by,someone else is it made popular by being, spread on tick tock it seems like that's,a bit of a more accurate statement but,of course for a headline they can't get,all that in,laurel county kentucky, the laurel county sheriff's office said, that a driver on i-75 called 9-1-1 after, noticing a 16-year-old girl in a silver, toyota in front of her making gestures, known on tick-tock to signal for help in,domestic violence situations, while making the call the watchful, driver gave updates on the car's,location and said it was being driven by,a man later identified as james herbert, brick 61 years old of cherokee north, carolina the sheriff's office said, detectives stopped brick as he left the, interstate on exit 41. the investigators, learned that the girl was reported, missing tuesday out of asheville north, carolina the teenager told authorities, she went with brick who took her to ohio,to stay with his relatives when brick's,relatives learned the teenager was, underage and missing brick left ohio and, began traveling south deputies said,so,there's a few things i want to touch on,that we can kind of infer from how this,is phrased first of all,the watchful driver um it's one thing to,notice what you think might be a hand, signal uh it's another thing to stay on,that to call 9-1-1 this is someone that, was, very concerned very aware and actually, acted in the moment in a way that was, significant i mean it led directly to,this girl getting out of this situation,i wish that we had that driver's name, because i would love to tell you this is,the person that's responsible for being, this amazing i i,i have,in my experience i,i run into a lot of people that might, see something like that might be a,little curious about it but maybe, wouldn't exactly, you know go as far as staying on the, tail of the vehicle calling 9-1-1 i mean, really seeing it through, that takes an extra special type of,person so i really wish i had their name, but unfortunately we don't,now the other thing here and i think, this is another, kind of important aspect to touch on i,believe we're talking about i think it's,a 16 year old, and, the way that this last paragraph is,written, there's a possibility and we don't know, all the details of course,um there's a possibility that initially, she actually went off with this person, with james brick, now i imagine there's a good chance this, could be a grooming situation um,something along those lines, and i think it's just really important, that we take a moment for,any potential teenagers that are out, there or parents to maybe have a,conversation with your teenagers about, this aspect,if they're in a situation like this even,if they thought they were making a,decision to go off with this guy to,out of state you know to essentially run, away with this person, they absolutely have the right to change, their mind and outside of that the fact, that they're underage, that decision like i just i get worried, that someone a teenager that, finds themse

THIS HAND SIGNAL SAVED HER LIFE! (TIKTOK)

THIS HAND SIGNAL SAVED HER LIFE! (TIKTOK)

A teen girl was kidnapped and used a hand signal that went viral and tik-tok to alert a driver  ,that she was in danger. ,Welcome to Survivor Archives,Okay so as a mom to teenage girls,  ,this is my worst nightmare and acts as an important cautionary tale. If you are not  ,already aware of the signal that potentially saved a teenage girl's life, please be sure to  ,keep watching and share this video. You never know when something like this can happen to your child. ,For parents who don't use tik tok or have not allowed your child to have an account yet, like me,  ,I am sharing this story to ensure we have more survival stories rather than murder mysteries. ,A 16 year old girl was kidnapped from Asheville, North Carolina, her parents had reported her  ,missing on Tuesday the 2nd of November 2021. So the details surrounding how this kidnapping occurred  ,are not clear. What we do know though is that the man who kidnapped her was 61 year old  ,James Herbert Brick and he allegedly was an acquaintance of the family. He initially took the  ,teenage girl to Ohio, where he had some relatives but when his relatives discovered she was a minor  ,and was reported missing, he swooped her up and quickly left. On Thursday the 4th of November 2021,  ,two days later, the 16 year old girl was riding in the passenger seat of a silver Toyota when a man  ,named David Isaacs passed her on the interstate in Kentucky. He saw her signalling the infamous  ,hand gesture through the window, however did not recognise what this meant, which is  ,why it is so important to share this story. David Isaacs reported that she was mouthing  ,He believed he even saw her lip-sync call 9-1-1 and reported that it looked like she had  ,been crying. He then called 911 and 61 year old James Herbert Brick was arrested that same day  ,and charged with unlawful imprisonment, possession of content showing sexual activity  ,by a minor and kidnapping. The 16 year old teenager survived and made it back to her family. ,This girl will undoubtedly experience significant trauma from this harrowing experience but she is safe  ,because she chose to be brave. ,Okay so the hand signal she used needs to be understood  ,and interpreted worldwide. It originated from the Canadian Women's Foundation which is a domestic  ,violence charity, after the rise in domestic violence during lockdowns as a way to communicate  ,that you need help via video conference. It's a simple gesture of palm to the camera, ,tuck the thumb in and trap thumb. If you see this via video or in person please be sure to call  ,the authorities in your country. Understanding these simple signals can save a life.  ,Thanks for watching. If you would like to hear more ,survival stories please ensure to like, comment, subscribe  ,and hit that notification bell and if you're on facebook please like, comment and follow my page.

Group behind TikTok hand signal relieved after missing girl rescued | The World

we were obviously very relieved when we,heard that somebody had recognized the, signal that she was making and had, responded um and it was obviously in,this context she was in immediate danger, and it made sense to respond by calling,911 calling the police um and,so we were just very very relieved and,we're so happy that she's better and, she's out and she's safe and, where she needs to be right now yes, because she'd been taken by someone, known to her nevertheless against her, will,so give us a sense of how you came up,with this idea and how widespread it had, become known, well signal for help was launched in,april 2020 by canadian women's,foundation um as the risk of,gender-based violence was really, increasing because of the pandemic, and at the same time use of video calls, had increased so the reason behind it,was really to um be able to use, something without leaving a digital, trace uh which is often important in,cases of gender-based violence where, people um really need uh to be safe and, they're often closely monitored, and they still need to ask for the help, they need so that's the context in which,we launched it,um,and since then it's been shared millions,of times on social media my um i have, teenagers at home and they told me that, they knew the signal before they knew, that it was done by the you know the, group that their mum worked for and, worked with um so,i think it's really about the power of,the viral video on tiktok that's what,we're seeing here and we've done a,little bit of research according to what,we know one in three people in canada, know about the signal for help or have, seen it being used um and so it's had an,incredible impact here um where we,developed it but equally we know that,it's known and used in the states we,know that it's been featured in news, stories in brazil and we know that an,influencer in turkey has talked about it,so we've certainly heard echoes since it,was launched that it's very very popular,so,to your point it must have got a lot of,traction on social media because a 16,year old girl is not really your target, audience and she had heard about it yeah, exactly and i think that's the thing, that's been shared tik tok instagram um,all kinds of social media platforms, where i certainly don't spend much time,um it's been extremely um well known and, used in many different cases and i think,um the fact that it's got this sort of,uh um,snowball effect is is a really strong, indication to us that it's needed but, also that um,you know we want we're happy about the, fact that it's bringing down barriers, for talking about domestic violence and, asking for help because those two things, are often stigmatized and we think it,really is important that people, understand this signal means reach out,to me and the signal is something that's,that encourages people to follow up with, each other uh which is critical for, young people but it's also critical at a,time that we're in a pandemic and we,need to know that people are watching, out for us yeah and remarkable as you, point out she was noticed driving in,this car making this hand signal in the, hope that someone would help her,of course we should warn people that, they need to proceed with caution, because when women are victims of,violence the situation can be quite, dangerous, absolutely and and that's why i think um,it's important to to point out that it's,not always the case that you can respond, safely and that you have to pick your, times when you can respond safely and, that you are being led by the needs of,the person who's doing the,the signal so on our website you can go,and see canadianwomen.org,it gives advice on how to reach out but, what's most important is that we are, equipped to respond to the risk of abuse, whether the signal is used or not so we,have to know the signs we have to know, how to be safe and how to be,approachable so that we can respond in a,non-judgmental way um and of course it's,not just about i mean we're we all, should be equipped but it's not just, about individuals it's also about the,community-based services that are, critical supports in every single, community and that help, every survivor work through their their, journey after they've,gotten out of abusive circumstances and, that's so important to to,underline that there are community, services that do this help every single, day are you in touch with other, community services globally to try and, spread this around even further, yes so through, the women's funding network in the us we,um,expanded the reach uh to,every single women's organization like, ours the women funding um organizations,in the us and it's certainly gone, further than that to other,um funders like ours uh we are, interested to see if it how it's picked,up by different women's services like, women's shelters or sex assault sales, centers um because they also have their, tools and this is just one tool of many,so it's not to replace anything that's,already being done that's successful, that communities and organizations hav
