Former congresswoman Gabby Giffords and Sen. Mark Kelly talk gun violence prevention l GMA
now with our GMA cover story and as part,of our ongoing ABC series guns in,America I sat down with former, congresswoman Gabby Giffords and her, husband Arizona Senator Mark Kelly, yesterday marked exactly 12 years since,Giffords was shot in the head nearly, killed in a mass shooting and she has, been leading her National gun safety, advocacy group Giffords for 10 years now,I spoke with a couple about their, challenging journey and their vital work, combating gun violence, former astronaut Mark Kelly swearing in,for his first full term as Arizona, senator by his side his wife former, congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords public, service has always been a big part of,not only for Gabby and me for both of us,but also for our family I'm so proud of,him I'm so proud of him, thank you thank you the couple now, reflecting on the life-altering moment, which happened 12 years ago,at a meet and greet event outside Tucson,a gunman killing six and injuring 13,including Gabby who was shot in the head,we cannot forget how both of your lives, changed January,2011. Senator Kelly you have been there,by her side all of this time what don't,we know about the strength and, resilience of your wife she's always, been about like just never giving up,inch by inch, and just she often tells me remain, focused and she was in a coma for, probably about a week or so but Gabby's,recovery has been quite remarkable what, have you learned from the experiences, these past 12 years,to be grateful for friends, and family and to live every day to the, fullest,Aphasia has impaired her ability to,speak but still Gabby makes Incredible, progress in her recovery her outrage, transforming into action after the, devastating events of Sandy Hook which, killed 26 people including 20 young, children, the day that happened we were not in the, same place and I got on the phone with,Gabby enough is enough that's what you, said you know enough is enough and we,made a decision to start an organization,Gabby's organization that she built has,had tremendous, tremendous impact and Gabby, what is your hope, this year, for Giffords save lives save lives save, lives save lives and that is your that,is your Battle Cry yes Gabby's now, celebrating a decade of her organization,Giffords bringing together survivors and,Advocates including Jeanette and Pam two, moms who both tragically lost their sons,to gun violence tell us about Patrick, over his dreams Patrick was an artist, and he was a student at the Ringling,College of Art and Design when he was, killed he was very talented and driven, and just an amazing person and Pam tell, people what they need to know especially, today this special day about your son, this is my oldest son Terrell Bosley and, today is his 35th birthday he was, everything and so instead of me,celebrating his 35th birthday at the, cemetery I'm here with you all and I,appreciate that but it's difficult today, turning their pain into purpose Giffords, dares to dream what a future looks like, without gun violence looking ahead are,you optimistic are you optimistic about, the work that Giffords can continue to,do to make a difference I'm optimistic,it will be a long hard haul but I'm,optimistic if somebody's watching and, wondering what they can do in their own, communities to help what is your advice,be a leader,it's an example,be passionate be courageous be your best, and she certainly is the progress is,just incredible I'm telling you I have, done interviews with her over the years, and to sit down with her and and her, husband just to see the progress that, she has made and she has turned her pain, into purpose and she wants people to,know that Gifford sees signs that this, gun safety movement is making a big, impact over the past 10 years her, organization says that 525 gun safety, laws have been passed at the state level, and we know in June President Biden, signs the law the first major national, gun safety legislation passed by,Congress in nearly 30 years her work is,definitely ongoing but what also struck,me when she was talking to the two moms, and the moms are talking about the sons,Gabby was just stroking their backs you, know just just I mean that just some it,you know can can truly understand uh,what it is that they're going through, and it was after Sandy Hook that they, started their organization because she, said enough is enough that was the, moment and she's really changing, changing the laws out there for the, better thank you for that Robin that was, excellent well hey there GMA fans Robin,Roberts here thanks for checking out our,YouTube, stuff here so go on click the Subscribe, button right over right over here to get, more of Awesome videos and content from,GMA every day anytime we thank you for, watching and we'll see you in the, morning on GMA

How to Buy Black Market Guns From Cops | The Business of Crime
News reporter: 15 people are dead ,after a mass shooting
at a bar in South Africa.,Police said a group of
armed men entered the tavern, and started shooting
at the patrons inside.,Zing: In July 2022, South Africa was
rocked by a spate of bar shootings.,Twenty-two people were killed
at three different bars,in one weekend alone.,In one shooting,
the gunman used AK-47s,,with more than a hundred
empty cartridges found at the scene.,But how did they obtain
such powerful guns?,Some point the finger at what might
be considered an unlikely source:,the police.,South Africa’s rising gun violence,is largely driven by
the trade of illegal guns,on the black market.,Zing: On average, 23 people are shot
and killed in South Africa daily.,Many of the weapons
used are illegal,,stolen from police stations
or private security firms.,More than 500 firearms
were reportedly lost from, the South African Police Services.,One hundred
and fifty-eight firearms,,which were being stored
at the Norwood SAP 13 store, have been stolen.,In January 2022, more than 150 guns
were found to be missing, from a single station
in Johannesburg.,Forensic evidence of
these same weapons, revealed them to be factoring in
at crime scenes across the country.,Police are generally
considered to be,the most corrupt public institution
in just about any country.,The illegal gun trade
in South Africa,,said to be both perpetuated
and pursued by police,,shows the blurred lines between
policing and lawbreaking, that are a reality
all over the world.,This is The Business of Crime.,In this episode,,we’re looking at how corrupt cops
can aid and abet criminals,,continuing the cycle of crime
and keeping themselves in the job.,Zing: To start, it’s important
to understand the conditions, and circumstances that foster
corruption within a police force, and allow it to thrive.,What feeds that
is social dysfunction,,as well as limited
economic opportunity,,and then the exploitation of
all of that by these gangs, and criminal networks.,Bad cops don't come from nowhere.,They’re created
because they’re tolerated.,News reporter: There are allegations
that police cartels and gangs, are working together.,In countries where there are
high rates of killings by police,or high rates of
police corruption in general,,it usually goes alongside
inadequate laws, inequality,,and human rights violations.,News reporter:
The Honduras national police, arresting their former president
at his home, after the US requested
his extradition to the States,to face drug trafficking and weapons charges.,Governments lacking in trust
and transparency—,with politicians
who are themselves corrupt—,often contribute to
a lawless environment.,Typically around, you know,,areas where organized crime
is incredibly active,or those organized crime networks
have really found a way,to infiltrate police structures
in South Africa and Brazil,,where broadly within society,
there are issues,,whether it’s in politics
or in other arenas, where there’s corruption
in and of itself,,that’s where policing institutions
may become corrupted themselves.,In South Africa,
police corruption today,is impossible to divorce from
the country’s history of apartheid.,In poor Black communities
in particular,,cops still aren’t readily trusted.,Ziyanda: Your average
police officer in South Africa,is recruited from a community
that’s low income,,that’s under-resourced,,and they themselves
may not have chosen policing,as their first profession.,What that then does is open up
a lot of doors and windows, and opportunities for organized
crime to approach police officers, and say, “Do you want
to make more money?”,“Do you want to keep
your family safer?”,“You could do so
by colluding with us,either to turn a blind eye
or to make evidence disappear.”,Zing: In 2016, former police colonel
Christiaan Prinsloo,pled guilty to
a laundry list of charges,,including racketeering, and unlawful possession
and sale of firearms.,Every weekend,
there is somebody dying.,We don’t know whether
it’s because of all these guns, that was selling out to gangsters.,With the help of a colleague who
worked in the police munitions hold,,Christiaan Prinsloo
was found to have stolen, more than 2,000 firearms
in police possession over ten years,,generating more than 2 million rand,
or more than $100,000.,Ballistics have linked guns
that he took from evidence, and sold to gangsters,to the murder of hundreds of people,
on the Cape Flats in particular,,and the deaths of over 80 children.,The problem is far from
confined to South Africa.,In Brazil, the lines
are even further blurred,,as police, struggling to
combat organized criminal groups,,instead cooperate with them
to maintain control.,In Rio de Janeiro,
this is actually very common.,Police have a practice of seizing
guns from the drug dealers, and the militias, and selling them back to
the militias and drug dealers,,maybe for a different group,
a rival group.,Zing: Most m

TikTok Users Made A 'National School Gun Violence Day' Trend...
TikTok Users Made A 'National School Gun Violence Day' Trend...
all right hello guys welcome back to,another video so today i just wanted to,come on here and i just wanted to talk, about something that is totally, outrageous and the fact that people, actually thought this would be a good, idea and thought this would be cool and, maybe that they would get clout from it,on tick tock it's absolutely horrendous,so let me explain what's going on here,as if you guys didn't read the title, already there was actually a tick tock, trend that was made it was basically a,national school shooting day like they, were actually gonna make like that as a,thing and they were gonna make it,tomorrow the 17th of december they were, literally going to make a day about, something that is so horrible and it's,actually pretty sad that people on tick, tock have stooped down to this type of,level because this takes it way past, that other national rape day trend where, people basically said they were gonna do,this on a saturday or something, earlier this year and it was really, disgusting that they would try to make, trends like this on tick tock and, actually say they were gonna make a day,out of something so horrible but now we,have it but now it's with threatening, schools all across america and you, probably know how i feel about this, right off the bat because of what, happened last month like i made a video, about my opinions and my feelings on all, that and now that i heard that there's a,national pretty much gun violence day, trend that was made on tick tock i am,not very happy about it because i have,to go back to school tomorrow and a lot,of kids have to go back to school, tomorrow and here in my state it just, seems like the fear never ends it really, never does because we've had so many, copycat threats after that whole tragedy, that happened last month and it's not, even funny like kids after that whole, tragedy were trying to get days off of,school maybe weeks off of school by,making these threats and many schools, actually went into lockdown and many, schools had students they were very, paranoid like if somebody were to knock,on the door to come in like just an,average student someone would go up to,the door and let them in and there would,be like this group of people who was, actually like really paranoid that there, could have been something else behind, that door and i was actually feeling the, same way to be honest like i wasn't,scared but i was paranoid and i still, kind of am and just the fact that, something would go trending like this on,tick-tock does not surprise me but, besides that the trend was actually, removed from the app as a whole like you, cannot find any of these videos anymore, which is actually good and i'm happy, tick tock decided to take those down but,i just have a message to all the people, who were promoting this all over tik tok,and they thought that it would be funny, just to you know say like this on,tick tock and make up these types of,days and events and i mean to be,honest honestly just you like just, the fact that you think it's funny to,make these types of things on tick tock, let alone promote it to a lot of people, through social media like honestly just, get a light stop being a loser,on the internet who's just going around, looking for tick tock clock and other, clout around social medias you notice, when you make things like this though,it's basically committing a federal, crime of terrorism and you can end up in,jail with a felony for a long time like, are we using our asses to think i'm,genuinely asking this because that's,what it seems like like you know how, many kids you made fearful of school, because of something you thought was, funny and you decide to promote it on,social media you probably got a lot of,kids fearing school tomorrow and it's,actually really sad now here's my advice,to the people who are going to school, tomorrow nobody even knows that this is,gonna happen or not but we might as well, prepare for the worst if you're ever in,one of these situations whether you're,in class in a bathroom in the hallways, whatever please for the love of god, protect yourself and do what you have to,do to survive and make sure you always, are aware of your surroundings no matter, where you are no matter how safe you, feel because realistically no matter, where you are at school at home at work,at a concert on a vacation wherever bad, things can happen now my greatest advice,to you if you're caught in the hallway,or in a bathroom if you are ever caught,up in something as horrible as this if,you can please get out of the school and, just flee that is if you can now if,you're stuck in the bathroom and say, like the threat would be outside the, bathroom like please for the love of god, hide in the stall and before you hide in,the stall like grab something that you, could possibly use as a weapon that's,all i can basically suggest to you, because if you're in a bathroom doing, this you're kind of at least if,the threat was in front of the bathroom,or in the bathroom or wherever now, besides that overall if you're ever

Prisoners Are Going Viral on TikTok
Prisoners Are Going Viral on TikTok
welcome,to prison tick tock this is a steak, stove, made out of a melted hot pot so we make, our hot water in the morning for our, coffee, the lives of incarcerated people that, were once hidden are now going viral, thanks to the younger generation, people became so hyped up about them, they get to see what it's like behind, the wall it's like a whole nother world, kevin smith is one of dozens of people, who have posted their prison experiences,on the platform, now we're seeing the daily meals that, was a good trade that i posted, there's trays that are in there that are,so gross like,it'll run away from you before you eat,it the minimal outdoor time, and the how to's for prison life hacks, like heating up hot water,i mean that's literally how we had to,make our water because they don't have, hot water spigots or anything, everything on canteen that they do sell, requires to be cooked so,the only way to cook it is to macgyver,or something and while cell phone, footage from prisons has found its way,on social media before, people share this man these tick tocks, are confronting misconceptions of prison, life i wanted to show people what it was, like inside, like behind the wall and there's not all,bad people in there, due to prisons being hidden and removed, from society mass incarceration in the,u.s is vastly misunderstood, with entertainment perpetuating ideas of,rowdy prison life, and those incarcerated drawn up as,soulless criminals who are all dangerous,to society, anger management controlling the savage, beast, inside you but tiktok is challenging, that, people on the outside are seeing people,on the inside as people, bianca tylek is the founder and, executive director of worth rises a,national criminal justice advocacy, organization, working to end the exploitation of,people that it targets so i always knew, that i wanted to at some point work on,criminal justice issues, she says tick-tock is especially showing, the realities of a younger generation, that is incarcerated which is resonating, with other tiktok users,as people many times we're young as,people who are charismatic,as people who experience joy and pain, and all of the same sentiments that we,do every day and i think that's really, really critical,it's giving people the chance to ask all, sorts of questions about prison life, with one being the most common, how do they have cell phones in the, first place cell phones are contraband,in prisons, lawmakers stress their potential danger,to facilitate crimes, there have been some instances where, contraband cell phones were used to,threaten state senators, blackmail civilians for money as well as,extort other inmates loved ones, yet they still have made their way past, prison walls in the thousands, don't get me wrong there is people that, will use it for bad you know like use it,to make hits on the outside stuff like, that, but if they were so worried about them, then the staff members wouldn't bring, them in,cell phone smuggling has been previously, caught on camera from being stuffed, inside sports balls and thrown over, fences to getting dropped by drones, but one way is by far the most common, the only way, that cell phones really make their way, into facilities,in a mass movement or way is through, staff, officers or kitchen workers or you know, people who deliver stuff, that's how it all comes in and the, punishment for being caught with one can, range from time and solitary confinement,to years added on to sentences,it's definitely risky but i figured if,it did go any type of viral or anything, that it would, probably take a while for them to catch,on and by that time i'd be gone, kevin only started posting about a week, before he was set to be released back in,april, knowing at that point it would be less, likely he'd get caught with the phone, and those we spoke to who are still in,prison asked to be recorded over the, phone for their safety, like j money i go through the extra, steps to make sure that i'm careful on,my end you know what i mean,in six years i got caught with two, phones and then this year they wrote me,up for being on chick chart,in 2018 almost 12 000 cell phones were, seized in mississippi prisons alone, cell phones are so pervasive that, lawmakers cannot stop the onslaught that,is coming in,so they're trying to stop their use in a,different way with the cell phone, jamming reform act, introduced by arkansas senator tom, cotton and south carolina senator, lindsey graham in 2019,the bill would allow state and federal, prisons to use phone jamming technology,to prevent cell phone usage, this technology is currently prohibited,by the fcc,the bill's motivation might not only be,to prevent crimes but also to keep, inhumane prison conditions hidden from, the public, the virality of tick-tock helps us,actually, see the thing that so many are trying to,hide from us,it's stuff that you don't get to see, every day nobody's used to being inside,of a prison cell or,just actually communicating with, prisoners, and that communication and insight has, made tick tocks from inside pris
