Schools step up security in response to threats on TikTok
developing this morning a number of,school districts across the u.s and here,in northeast florida canceling classes, over a new tick-tock challenge it,promotes threats of violence at schools, actually they're not canceling the, classes here in northeast florida good, morning districts in california texas, minnesota and missouri say they plan to,shut down others including several local, school districts are ramping up security,on campuses the fbi is also involved, across the board officials say that, there is nothing to suggest any of these, threats are credible but they are taking, them seriously news for jacks reporter, ashley harding is joining us live at the, duval county school district, headquarters ashley we want to make it,clear that there are no specific threats, targeting any local schools, that is true jennifer and bruce good, morning to both yes and that is a,message that our local school districts, are sharing as well and they also say, that if anything does change they have, plans in place to act quickly now duval, county schools parents including myself, last night received a voice recording, and also an email they want to make it,clear that the threats on tick tock do,not appear to target any specific, district or school but they also say, this behavior will not be tolerated, posts being widely circulated on social, media have jacksonville area school, districts and police on high alert and, school officials want to send a message, they're taking this very seriously duval, county schools said in part we do not, believe these threats are credible our, police are closely monitoring the, situation and are ready to respond to,anything that might suggest a specific, threat to our schools dcps is joined by,the clay and st john's school districts,in condemning the posts and discussing, consequences someone could face if they, made a threat it doesn't matter if,you're just joking around if you make a,threat against a school or a person this,is a serious crime our local law, enforcement treat it as such,a little is known about the origin of,the threats the camden county georgia, school district's facebook page offered, more insight it reads the tick tock is,thought to have originated from a,midwest state while the threat is not, considered local or credible we have, shared the tick tock rumor with the, camden county sheriff's office and our, other local law enforcement partners, now it's also important to point out for, many students including dcps students, this is the last day before winter break, and we have heard from some parents who, plan to keep their children at home, today the districts however are not, recommending that live this morning, ashley harding channel 4 the local, station, and this is certainly a good time to,point out to you that here in florida, there is an easy way to report threats,or anything suspicious online or through, your phone you can do it online or,through your phone it's called fortify, florida this is what it looks like and,it connects you directly to law, enforcement and school officials it was, launched after the shooting in parkland,so when you search for it online or on,your phone it's broken down basically, into four steps okay so the first this,is what it looks like the first just, simply ask that you type in the school, where you're where that threat may, involve and then as you advance now it's,important to point out you do not have,to give your name you can remain, anonymous as you go through this process, step two of course it says tip details, you fill out as much information as,possible so that the school as well as,law enforcement can investigate then you,can also there's a section here where, you can add a photo or you can also add, video you don't have to but keep in mind,it could be screen shots from facebook, recordings from tick tock that the more, information law enforcement has really,is the better so last, here you can and you can see it's,optional you can enter your name and, contact information if you want but if,not you can leave this section here, blank and then all you have to do is hit,the submit tip and remain anonymous you,can find this link by the way to this, tool on our website right now news for,jacks.com

School Shooting Threats on TikTok Prompt Closures and More Police
School Shooting Threats on TikTok Prompt Closures and More Police
a tick tock trend involving school, shooting threats is prompting closures, across the country and action from law, enforcement but what's behind this, disturbing challenge we're seeing and,how is tick tock's parent company, reacting for more on this story we're,going to turn to bloomberg news reporter, nick carollo nick welcome back to quick, take start by just giving me the lowdown,on these videos what exactly are they, and when did this start happening,so we started to hear some reports, earlier this week of viral videos, cropping up on tick tock and other, social media platforms that were very, vague, messages that were warning of some sort,of school shooting or bombing activity,it generally those kinds of videos, didn't name specific places no schools,no districts, but they usually focused on december,17th and so that gave a lot of um pause,to school officials and law enforcement, officials and we're kind of starting to,see the backlash to that now,so what are those law enforcement, officials doing in response and how do,they kind of suss out the validity of,these claims versus, definitely disturbing but just just a,video that someone is making,so,generally they're looking for, specificity um we have seen some schools, close buildings out of an abundance of,caution other schools have brought in,um you know additional police presence, into their schools um but you know, generally the messages that we're,hearing from local law enforcement, officials and school officials is that, these don't appear to be credible, threats and for that reason they are, generally keeping schools open um,for like i mentioned just given the, ambiguity of a lot of these videos sure, sure and do we know why this sort of,started popping up is it a trend that, you know students are doing or is it,something more disturbing than that,we don't really know that much some, school officials have speculated that, this was a way for students to,try to cut class and it morphed into, something a little bit more sinister um,but really this is you know just the, nature of these videos and how quickly, they can spread on social media makes it,really difficult to say where it,originated or who might have started, these videos yeah of course and i wonder, too if there's any sort of uh legal, ramifications in this for the students, who've made these videos could they, get into any sort of legal trouble,i don't know for sure but i know that, schools have really gone above and, beyond trying to you know suss out where, these are coming from um,it's probably a big question for school, officials and lawmakers yeah and i,should mention in terms of the federal, response uh tick tock said that they are, working with law enforcement to look, into warnings about potential violence,at these schools i am curious what that, tells you about kind of where tic toc, sees their role coming in here and, specifically bike dance the parent, company of tick tock do they see, themselves as kind of,needing to cooperate a little bit more, than say other nameless social media, platforms might if they were in the same, situation, that's a good question you know we have, seen statements so far from tick tock as,well as,some federal law enforcement agencies, like the department of homeland security,as well as the fbi generally they have, been pretty, plain statements they're just urging, anybody with any information to come, forward and that they're,um,so far are not aware of any really, serious credible threats to schools,it's a really good question you know tic,toc is concerned with this kind of,trend that you know allegedly originated,on its platform they want to get to the, source of where these come from and it's,it's a big question not just for tick, tock but for snapchat where some of,these videos have also been seen, sure and also i know that in your, reporting one of your sources talked, about how,it's not just this challenge there's,a history of problematic content on,these platforms what what are you, hearing in your reporting about kind of,the potential normality of things like, this as scary as that might sound yeah i,mean a couple people put out statements, saying that this is not the first time, that a trend has kind of interfered with, school's ability to just educate, students in a safe way there was a trend,i think recently where students were, being challenged to slap their teachers, and it really just i mean that one is,obviously a little bit different from, this but,it does kind of bring into,um question, what is the social media's platform to,like police these kinds of trends when, they do interfere with school activities, yeah and it's also just interesting to,me the timing of this because it's right, before the holidays and we've been, reporting all week on the university, level colleges closing because of covid,so,these schools are just dealing with a,lot right now and you're reporting have, you spoken with any school officials, who've given you any insight as to how, they're thinking through their strategy, for when to,bring studen

Schools on guard after violent threats on TikTok
right now school districts across South,Florida and the country are on high, alert staff parents and law enforcement, say they are concerned about apparent, threats being made on social media and,it's all reportedly a part of a tick, tock trip and as a result you can see, more law enforcement on local campuses, today local 10's land Rojan joining us,live to explain Liam, and I want to be clear the school that,I'm live in front of right now has not, been the target of any specific threat,it is just one of many many schools both,in Miami-Dade and Broward County as you, mentioned no local schools have been, shut down because of these generic, threats that have been put on Tick Tock, but there are schools across the country, that are having to change the way they, operate today whether it be no backpacks,to school shutting their doors or adding, increased security because of what, they're seeing,a generalized threat of violence to,schools posted on the social media app,Tick Tock is prompting increased safety, measures even in school closures across, the country here at home leaders at,Miami-Dade and Broward School Districts, say schools will remain open with added, patrols this email sent to Broward, parents late Friday reads in part quote, while this threat did not originate, locally and is not believed to be,credible there will be increased law, enforcement presence across our schools, district administrators and staff will, also have increased vigilance Miami-Dade,County Public Schools made a similar, statement as well citing additional, police presence and vigilance Tick Tock, addressed the threats saying quote we,handle even rumored threats with utmost, seriousness which is why we're working, with law enforcement to look into, warnings about potential violence at,schools even though we have not found, evidence of such threats originating or,spreading via Tick Tock this comes on,the heels of Thursday's arrest of a 13,year old girl who now faces 10 felony, charges for allegedly posting this, threat to 10 local schools on Instagram, several other threats of violence and, arrests of teens have preceded it just, this year officials urging parents to,get involved in fighting this trend we,really need to practice additional, conversations with the community and, engage parents in joining us in creating,a new narrative for kids and warning, parents that making threats like these, carry serious lifelong consequences, these are felony charges this isn't a,misdemeanor it isn't a citation it's not, even a warning these are felony criminal, charges that will stay with them for the, rest of their life, and on top of those criminal charges, that come to anyone any teen any student, who makes these types of threats this is,extremely disruptive to the school day,to the way School operates to the, education process and the effects come, not only to the students themselves but, also to the teachers the parents of the, kids that are going to school every day,we've spoken to students in the past who,say this is affecting their mental, health of course bringing back painful, memories of school shootings, reporting live in Pinecrest Lee and, local 10 News

U.S. schools ramp up security over TikTok threats, though actual risk unclear
school authorities across the country, have ramped up security measures today, after alleged threats of school violence, began emerging on the social media, platform tick tock yahoo finance tech, editor dan howley joins us now for more, dan break this down for us how did these, threats begin and how are schools, responding, yeah that's right emily it seems like, these threats kind of began rather, nebulously uh it doesn't seem,as though many of the districts that, have uh responded uh saw any direct, threats to themselves but there was one, where a student was seen discussing, school and then holding a gun that ended,up being a bb gun,and we've seen you know responses from, different school districts across the, country as well as uh some of the, leading authorities in those con, counties basically coming out and saying, you know we're going to be taking extra, precautions or in some places have even, canceled school i went on tick-tock and,i looked up school threat, which is a hashtag and i saw some, students who had posted images from, their school with classrooms that were, half empty because school districts had, basically sent out notices to parents, and so they just ended up keeping their, children home so it's disrupting school, for sure for a lot of students some, students though were taking it in stride, and uh two degrees and making jokes, about it uh but you know obviously this, comes after the school shooting that we,had seen in michigan uh and you know, obviously, the spat of school shootings that we've,seen, across the past few years so that means, that these different districts uh,counties and states are going to be,taking uh extra precaution but uh we did,see uh for instance the governor of new, jersey send out a tweet saying that, there were no uh real uh definitive, threats but that they were going to make, sure, that students were protected regardless, dan you know it's really amazing how, many trends come out of tick tock some,of them are fun some of them are cool, some of them are just downright crazy, and this downright dangerous but how, credible are some of these threats, yeah a lot of law enforcement uh that's,responding to this say that the threats, are aren't credible at all that it seems,to be kind of a panic that was set off,and then, because of the social nature of tick, tock uh and teenagers being teenagers uh,people started tweeting uh sorry sending, out tick tocks about it then making, their own responding tick tocks about it,other kids started making tick tocks, about that and so on and so forth and it,continued uh to metastasize and just, spread throughout the country so you, know from what i was seeing there were, tick tocks uh of some kids saying you, know nothing's going to happen tomorrow, just relax this is from yesterday uh,others saying that they were nervous to,go to school and then as i said some, showing kids at school today with, classrooms that were half empty saying, look at what uh you know kind of,ridiculousness this has caused but it,doesn't seem like it's a credible threat,at all,and different school districts have said, that uh and uh law enforcement had said, that but just out of an abundance of,caution they just wanted to warn parents, and are taking different steps uh to,ensure the safety of students and as i,said uh following the school shooting in,michigan uh that makes sense but uh you, know it doesn't seem like this is,actually anything that's going to happen,or has happened i kind of chalk it up to,something of a panic similar uh you know, obviously much darker but similar to,what we saw uh to that tide pod, challenge where everyone's saying oh my,god kids are eating tide pods now but i,don't think very many kids actually ate, todd tide pods, all right yahoo finance tech editor dan, howie thank you so much for that report

FBI Director Christopher Wray | Is #TikTok a threat to national security? #PolicyTalks
thank you thanks David,um I'm Joy Roadie I'm an associate, professor of public policy and the, director of Michigan's science, technology and Society program here I'm,a historian my work focuses on the, relationship between the sciences and,National Security but I wanted to ask,you a question following,um this this line a number of students, have questions about Tick Tock,um and you recently shared with, lawmakers you're concerned that the app,is a serious threat to U.S national, security,um legal and Technology experts seem to,have mixed views on the nature and, especially the imminence of the threat, what do you see as the main threats, posed by Tic Tac and how do you think, those are best addressed at a policy, level, well uh as I think I testified recently,to Congress and we do we the FBI do have,National Security concerns, about the app it's a parent company is,controlled by the Chinese government,uh and it gives them the potential to,leverage the app,in ways that I think should concern us,so what do I mean by that uh you know, one uh it gives them the ability to,control the recommendation algorithm,uh which allows them to manipulate, content and then if they want to to use,it for you know influence operations, which are a lot more uh worrisome in the, hands of the Chinese Communist party, than whether or not you're steering, somebody you know as an influencer to,one product or another,uh it they also have the ability to,collect data, through it uh on users which can be used, for traditional Espionage operations for, example, they also have the ability on it to get, access, they have essentially accessed through, the software to devices so you don't,have millions of devices and that gives, them the ability to engage in different, kinds of malicious cyber activity, through that,um and so all of these things are in the, hands of uh of a government that doesn't,share our values uh and that has a,mission that's very much at odds with, with what's in the best interest of the,United States that that that should, concern us,um,as I mentioned before the Chinese, government, has shown a willingness to steal,Americans data on a scale that dwarfs, any other I mean you look at the Equifax, hack alone they stole the equivalent of,half the population,of the United States you know personal, data so the idea of entrusting, that much data that much ability to,shape content and engage in influence, operations that much access to people's,devices,in effect to that government is,something that concerns us how do we,address it uh you know there's an,interagency process there's something, called the cypheus process which is,stands for the committee for foreign, investment in the United States that's,involved there may be agreements that, may be relevant to this requirements and, things like that you know whether or not, there's something that could adequately, address those concerns is you know a,product of,uh,very much discussion uh you know within, the within the interagency,uh uh but I think it starts with, awareness about the risks, thank you I'll turn it over to Ann,e thank you very much
