hey youtube family mike jones here back,with another video on my channel where,we talk about,all things investing and personal,finance with the genuine hope,that we will be able to inspire someone,to go ahead and get started with their,financial freedom journey,today with that said today we're going,to go ahead and be talking about,something,that's a little um unusual for my,channel but i want to bring awareness to,people,that are not aware of what's going uh,going on currently,and so uh without further ado we're,gonna skip the intro today because i,think it's,extremely important and i don't want,people to get distracted by my,cool intro but with that said let's go,ahead and start screen recording,now just a little background this is um,a blog that i personally follow,because i like the content on here and,um this is by my mini,mymoneywizard.com and so this is called,vemmo scam alert,what do you do if you accidentally get a,thousand dollars from a stranger,and so we'll go ahead and get right into,this right now,a few weeks ago i was sitting around,minding my own business when,cha-ching a thousand dollars fell into,my lap normally i would love the,cha-ching sound,effect that venmo makes but in this case,it might as well,have been an alarm bell on uh the vimble,scam,i had no idea who this person was or why,they would randomly send me a thousand,dollars,they immediately played the sympathy,card quickly sending a follow-up message,that said oops wrong person please,return the money,my first reaction was total empathy,since,i can only imagine the stomach trending,feeling of accidentally sending a,thousand bucks to a completely wrong,person,honestly i'm totally paranoid about,accidentally doing this,each time i send money on venmo if,you're a kind human,your first reaction might be similar to,mine you might,want to spend the poor person their,money back asap,especially during the holiday season,when or,which is when scammers go into overdrive,but be careful that's exactly how this,scam works,how the scam works surprisingly this,scam isn't listed on venmo's common scam,page,so i had to do some digging to find out,what,the heck is going on here eventually i,found this helpful thread on reddit,personal finance,and a follow-up article on the bbb,here's how it works scammers steal,credit cards and connect those cards,to their venmo accounts scammers then,send venmo payments to honest folks like,you and i,but they fund those payments with the,stolen credit cards,if you return the money the scammers,delete the stolen credit card and add,their own bank account in its place,what what happens next is unclear but,it's not good either way,according to the better business bureau,eventually any funds you sent will be,removed from your account,and you lose that money other sources,say the funds,actually get removed from the account of,the credit card victim,are of the credit card thieves victim in,other words the best case scenario,in other words in the best case scenario,you become an accessory to money,laundering,which is a federal crime in a worst case,scenario you lose a thousand dollars,so what do you do about this,unauthorized transaction,thankfully we can protect ourselves,here's how,step one don't send the money back,if you do you lose the money for good or,otherwise,help someone else get their money stolen,step two report,the venmo scammer the best way to deal,with this potential scam,is to have venmo send the money back on,your behalf,this way you're not risking your own,money to do this you have to report,suspicious transactions,by opening an uh a support ticket with,venmo,here's how so you go to the main uh,section,and you go down to get help and then,you would hit the my support tickets,icon and then under my tickets you would,put in the description what's going on,with your account,in the description explain that you did,not request money,in the description explain that you did,not request this money you are worried,that the transaction is fraudulent,and you would like venmo to reverse this,transaction,wait for venmo to take care of it again,don't try to fix this yourself,by letting venmo handle it if the person,is a scammer you have alerted the,authorities,it was if it was an honest mistake venmo,will manually,reverse the transaction on their end so,you don't have to risk your own money,conclusion sorry you didn't get a,thousand dollar venmo reward,for doing nothing for a split second i,had the dreams of a free thousand,dollars,then i realized how ridiculous that,sounded then,i then i immediately felt horrible for,the person,who was probably stressed to heavens,about whether i returned their money,as much as i wanted to ease the person's,worries as fast as possible,this is exactly what scammers are hoping,for they're counting on you to act,quicker than the banks,if you send them the money before a the,original victim,a the original victim realizes their,card is stolen,or b the bank realizes what's going on,then y

i'm stephanie thacker the,founder and ceo,of steadfast bookkeeping company which,is a full service,done for you bookkeeping and tax firm,and i'm here to simplify,all things bookkeeping and tax for your,small business,paying fees for accepting money from,your customers is a bit of a bummer and,i get it i know you worked hard for that,money,selling that product or service whatever,it is and having to give away about,three percent of that,is no fun i know however,when you're collecting payments using,those free versions,of venmo or paypal where there's no fee,involved with taking the payment,it is not helping your business and it's,likely hurting it so let me tell you why,first off there is a higher risk of scam,or fraud,we've seen it with so many of our,clients and you can read about it all,over the internet,at the end of the day there's just not,as much protection in those,no fee personal versions of the app as,there would be,a bookkeeping software or an invoicing,software,where your invoices and your payments,are secured,and protected the second thing is that,you're breaking the rules,and who wants to be a rule breaker not,me,that's right paypal and venmo state that,when you're using,those free no fee services for,businesses,you're actually breaking the rules they,have different versions they have,business versions and personal versions,if you read into that you'll see that,for those free,no fee versions where you're just,sending money back and forth on the apps,they want that to be kept to friends and,family who are paying maybe for,you know their half of dinner or paying,um for something like that and not,an actual business service so,i don't know about you but i don't have,time to mess around with that and be,caught for something so silly the third,thing is that it's,nearly impossible to do bookkeeping when,you're using,those free personal versions of the app,and the reason i say that is that,especially if you're using a bookkeeper,if you have a bookkeeper in-house or,you're out sourcing to a firm or an,individual,they might see a thousand dollar payment,come in they see a thousand dollar,deposit coming from your bank and all it,says,is venmo and even if we were to log into,venmo and look at those,details unless the person has included a,really good description,we don't know what that money was for,it's especially difficult if you're,selling products maybe for,15 20 25 here and there,it's really hard to know what the money,is for,even if it's you and you're if you're,only doing your bookkeeping say once a,month,are you really going to remember every,payment that came in and exactly what it,was for,no so it makes it really difficult to do,bookkeeping that way at the end of the,day you or your bookkeeper are probably,wasting time,trying to track down and remember what,that money was for,and that time could have just been spent,and paying the three percent fees and,you would have been better off that way,anyways,so what do i recommend instead well i,always recommend,using a software maybe you're using,something like quickbooks online that,is not only your bookkeeping and,accounting software but you can also,send invoices straight from quickbooks,and accept payments and guess what they,even have an option,where you can accept ach payments where,someone puts in their routing and,checking number,and those fees are far less than the,credit cards,even with a credit card processing fee,it's typically somewhere between two and,a half,and three percent you can also use,something like dubsado,or honeybook or something like that if,you're a service based business,or if you're a product based business,try using something like,square where you can input the specific,products that you're selling and their,price,that way when you go to collect payment,from somebody you have,detail on what you sold now you might be,thinking,yeah great i'm going to use that but,then i have to pay that,3 fee or whatever it is well guess what,i've got,good news that 3 is actually a deduction,for your business,it's an expense that will come right out,of your end-of-year profit,so there's no need to fear the three,percent like i said in the beginning i,get it you work hard for the products,and services that you sell,and it kind of stinks to have to give,that three percent away,but you should really look at it as a,convenience to doing business,i mean remember when you had to accept,checks or cash and then remember to go,and take it to the bank and record it,manually and all of those things who,wants to do that that's,definitely not efficient bookkeeping so,it's way convenient and efficient to,accept these payments online be able to,see the detail,and record it in your accounting,software,another thing is that you can easily,build that three percent
