instagram is playing catch up that's,right the company is rolling back,several changes after the release of its,latest update instagram faced a backlash,for rolling out an update to make the,app more similar to tick-tock users,expressed frustrations with the app's,shift from focusing on pictures to video,content this comes as instagram's parent,company meta announced its first ever,drop in revenue cbs news tech reporter,dan patterson joins us now for more on,this,dan good to see you good to see you,that is one of the largest companies in,the world how are they trying to keep up,with tick tock well for years we've been,accustomed to algorithmically sorted,content right so you follow or you,friend somebody or an account and you,don't see updates in real time you can,that's a setting but often you see the,content from those accounts you've,followed or friended in in order that,facebook or other social networks thing,is most engaging but again this is,content that you have opted into that,you friended or followed now they are,mimicking a feature of tick tock which,is algorithmic algorithmically,organized or sorted content this is,stuff that comes from elsewhere that the,algorithm thinks you might like it might,fit your interest but you have not opted,into this is a pretty big change for,these networks that if you'll recall,kind of based their entire social graph,on your friends your family and people,that you care about so that's why i've,been getting a lot on travel a lot on,food a lot on things that you know i,hadn't like you know hashtag in the past,so after the changes to the app were,announced the head of instagram,backtracked on the updates but then mark,zuckerberg said they would stay in some,form,why is there so much dysfunction with,instagram well we see that facebook and,instagram the apps facebook and,instagram are being used kind of as,tools now to fend off this competition,for years these were kind of pure play,apps we saw facebook the blue app they,call it as a social network where you,follow your friends and family your,interests uh instagram was a pure play,photo app for a long time it was,pictures cool stuff that you might want,to follow influencers dogs uh i like,dogs,so you would see a lot of stuff that you,were interested in but once again,pictures or friends and family posts,now they are using these apps to fend,off competition because that competition,is pretty fierce this tactic worked,fairly successfully facebook used,instagram actually they bought instagram,because they were kind of uh lagging on,their own mobile apps 10 years ago in,2000 april 2012 facebook bought,instagram to help boost their photos,but they've used instagram and facebook,to fend off like uh snapchat and other,competitors now they are trying to use,it once again as a tool to fend off,competition,swirld makes my head spin a little bit,dan should people expect more changes,from facebook and instagram this year,yeah we should expect those changes to,kind of follow that pattern sadly these,are no longer peer play applications,these are designed to be businesses,right they are designed for revenue and,when revenue is at stake look we're,seeing tech and all other companies kind,of tighten their belts and facebook is,no exception they need to generate,revenue which means they need more ads,which means they need to fend off,competition which means they need to,algorithmically sort content to make,sure that you stay on the cl site,viewing and tapping on those ads let's,look at let's face it mark it's a,marketplace now i mean you can buy,clothes you can buy products you can buy,appliances i mean everything's on,instagram these days dan patterson uh we,want to thank you we want to thank you,for all,that you brought to the stream this is,your last day and we just we're going to,miss you so much i'll miss you guys too,it's great to see you thank you very,much good luck thanks

meta has big plans for creators as it,looks for ways to continue to expand,especially in the metaverse mark,zuckerberg has announced new ways for,creators to make money including through,nfts reels and even from paid online,events and subscriptions on top of,trying to lure more creators to better,compete with tick-tock meta is also,shifting its algorithm since the,invention of facebook's news feed the,company has been focused on delivering,content that it knows users want to see,however after more than a decade it's,becoming clear some users need a little,more to stay engaged the success of tick,tock has unearthed a new kind of algo,magic giving people content they didn't,even know they wanted to see this is why,creators with little followings have,been able to gain massive traction on,tick tock but less so on metas platforms,now mark zuckerberg wants to change all,that for more on all this i'm joined by,bloomberg's tech editor,sarah fryer so talk to us about what,meta aka facebook is doing here and if,it's going to work,it's really a big bet to focus on,showing people content from people they,don't already follow that they haven't,already expressed interest in in the,hopes of helping those people build a,following as creators but it's really,risky um because it just flies in the,face of,all of the curation you've done of your,food you've decided who you want to,follow who you're friends with etc,meta is deciding that it thinks it has,something to show you that might be,better and it might or might not work so,it's a big moment of experimentation,they're really betting the company on,this because if they can't make money um,from this pivot then they won't be able,to really fund the metaverse and they,won't have the creator relationships,that they need to take into the,metaverse eventually,how are creators looking at the,differences between a tick tock and a,facebook or an instagram,well creators have their audiences on um,on instagram that they where they really,have this like back and forth,relationship and there's a it's easier,to connect in some ways on instagram,than it is on ticktop but tick talk is,is really offering people an opportunity,for more followings and is considered,the easier place to become famous,overnight uh compared to instagram which,is already kind of established and and,facebook is simply not top of mind for,young people anymore and that's another,thing that the company really needs to,change so they're leaning on instagram,and they're also leaning on changes to,facebook itself that are going to help,draw in young people and make them more,entertainment destinations than simple,social networks um that's all trying to,compete with tick tock however you know,this this is what they really need to do,to stay relevant and if it doesn't work,um then they're going to have,have um,potentially alienated some people who,have depended on the platforms working,the way they already do
