Facebook, Instagram and WhatsApp down in global outage
social media giant facebook and its, instagram and whatsapp services have, been hit by widespread outages facebook, says it's aware some people are having, trouble accessing the platforms but, hasn't said what's behind the problem, well let's speak to ian share about this,he's the editor at large at the consumer, tech site cnet and he's joining us,from maryland in the u.s very good to,have you with us,tell us about what this all is about i,mean facebook says some users but this, looks like a global outage how, widespread is it,well,it's hard to tell i will say that when,we're talking about facebook more than, half the world's online population is,using it every month so you know a few, users can be a lot of users but this is,this is a signif look these these, outages happen from time to time right, sometimes they are the result of bad, behavior hacks or something other times,it's someone who pushed the wrong button, and this time it seems like it may have, been not a bad thing it may have been, someone pushed the wrong button or some, computer is misconfigured and that'll,get fixed at some point but this has, been going on for over an hour now which,is long yeah,it is long and look these things tend to,be unusual because facebook in,particular really prides itself on,working really well you know over the, last i'd say five ten years we've seen, google apple facebook amazon all of them, have been relatively stable before that,it was pretty it was pretty normal for,the internet to kind of go in and out,and some websites not to work, you can look up the twitter fail whale,if you remember that period of internet, history so you know this stuff did, happen but it is unusual more so now and,so yeah having it out for an hour is,definitely uh noteworthy, and this is coming in a day after a,whistleblower revealed that the company, facebook prioritized profit over public, good, and we know that political pressure has, been building on the company we're not, speculating of course here whether, there's a link between that and what's,happening today but i'm wondering you, know with all this bad publicity right, now for facebook and this political, pressure can can the company withstand, all this bad pressure and bad publicity, what do they have to do to change things, around, yeah i mean look i think that they are, under a really a lot of pressure from, all over the place right not just, their critics and people like me in,silicon valley but also you've got the, regulators in washington all over the, world and look it's very clear that, facebook needs to really reckon with, what they have done, both in terms of actually allowing bad, behavior to continue happening on their, platform and how they haven't been, honest and forthright with you and me,and everybody else about how bad the, situation is and that that is a really, big problem how bad is the situation,i mean it's very clear that uh that, harassment and uh the spread of,disinformation undermining democracy all, these things have been happening on a,wider scale than facebook has told us,about we don't have access to any data, that actually tells us all we have are, little slivers of information right so,it is a big big problem and the company, has shown internally that they know that, right, that's what the whistleblower of course, revealed uh in um,in reports that we we read about, yesterday you know when you see all this,in,you wonder of course,if you know one company facebook owning, multiple major online platforms is a,good idea what can regulators do about, this, yeah i mean look there's been efforts, inside of washington to talk about, whether or not facebook should be forced,to be broken up you may remember that 20,years ago that conversation was, happening around microsoft and the way, that turned out was that even though, microsoft was found to be a monopoly all,the government did was slap it on the, wrist and allow it to continue being, microsoft so i don't know exactly how,far the us government's going to be,willing to go here but i am curious to,see whether this appetite for reigning,in the tech industry will be any, different from what it was a couple of,decades ago, thank you so much for talking to us,about this ian share from cnet joining,us there from maryland thank you for, your time, thank you
Let's move on to the first section of instagram facebook and whatsapp down
Why Instagram, Facebook and Whatsapp went down 2019!!! (Explained)
Why Instagram, Facebook and Whatsapp went down 2019!!! (Explained)
what's up guys welcome back to the, channel a ton of you are new here so to,whoever you are welcome to Team phl, thanks for subscribing be sure to stick, around and if you're new to this video,be sure to click Subscribe and join the, community continue to bring you social, media videos business videos vlogs and, tons of other great content that you're,not gonna want to miss so be sure to,subscribe right now alright let's do it,so as promised for a bunch of you I,replied to I applied to every color in,that video and that's my first video, that kind of went like obviously 20,000,views in a day isn't there's nowhere, near viral but for me that's viral so,I'm gonna make some videos coming up on,what that experience was like and I've,got some pretty funny comments both good, and bad and it was pretty cool, experience I liked it a lot so hopefully,I get some more those videos hopefully,we can get some more traction on this, channel and get it growing but I will, make some videos coming up on that what, that experience was like but today's,video this one right now is one that I,promised you it's an update explaining, why Facebook Instagram and whatsapp went, down and the release from the company to,say what their explanation was so I got, this information I got an article here,by tech from TechCrunch that's going to,help to try to give you some reasoning, for why everything went down and while,we were blocked out so let's get into us,talk about it let's go do it just, alright so we were all scrambling, yesterday all kicked out everybody, thought their account was banned or we,had been blocked or kicked out whatever,we were all panicking scrambling all, people who use Instagram especially, people for business and some people use, whatsapp and in these different, platforms just for communication tools,so everybody had their unique reasons, but we've become pretty rely on these, platforms so we were all freaking out,for different reasons so Facebook has, released official statement saying that, the issue was because of a server, configuration change so if you're like,me and don't have any clue what that, means I looked it up so I will put the, definition of that right here so you can, read it I'll read along with you server, network configuration, include enabling protocols modifying the, port or pipe used by a protocol, configuring encryption configuring the,SQL server browser service exposing or,hiding the SQL Server database engine on,the network and registering the server, principal name so that's I don't think, anything that's really a definition but, that was the closest thing I could find,on the Internet, when I looked up what that means so from,a very ignorant understanding to that I,would say it kind of means like they are, changing some things up and through, changing things and their server, internally it caused a an issue and that, resulted in us all being kicked out, that's being cut off from the platforms, and it is confirmed in that article that,it was an internal issue not an external, issue so a lot of people were thinking, that it could have been a hack or,somebody outside an external threat, creating the issue but that's not the, case it's an internal issue just, something that went wrong that took, longer than expected to remedy it's,actually the longest ever recorded, outage across the platform by a pretty, substantial margin they produced 7.5,million problem reports because of the, problem across the platform so it is,dramatically bigger than anything, previous so this was definitely not a,small scale issue and chances are you, were affected so that's the official, statement,I'll put again what what Facebook, exactly said right here so uh I hope it,right here and I'll read it out for you, yesterday as a result of a server, configuration change many people had, trouble accessing our apps and services,we've now resolved the issue and our, systems are recovering we're very sorry, for the inconvenience and appreciate, everyone's patience so there you have it,that's Facebook statement and that's,what what they're sticking to so who, knows what how that happened I don't I,would love to if someone has more, knowledge for these servers and whatnot,I would love to hear in the comments, section down below let us all know what, these words mean and why this issue took, place I can only imagine how many things, are going on in Facebook with all of,this data and all these things going on,on the fly that it's very possible for, something to slip up and create a major, problem and I think that's what happened, here so at least it was an internal, threat not an,one meaning that they can deal with it,in house and our data is not anyone's,grasp they can't get after it so that's,good anyways so it's good at least it's,an internal issue that our data is not,at risk right being taken by anyone, besides Facebook and they already know, everything about us so whatever but like,I said previous this should be a wake-up,call that truly these platforms can be,gone in an instant we lost them, yesterd

Global outage as Facebook, Instagram and WhatsApp go offline - BBC News
Global outage as Facebook, Instagram and WhatsApp go offline - BBC News
hundreds of millions of people around, the world using some of the most popular, social media sites Facebook Instagram, and WhatsApp have been forced offline in,a major Global blackout it's one of the, longest outages already lasting several, hours and Facebook's share price has, plummeted by nearly five percent it's,not known what's caused the problems or,when they'll be fixed our consumer, affairs correspondent Coletta Smith has,the full story,it's a Trilogy of companies with one, owner and this afternoon it was the same, message about them all Facebook is down,Instagram isn't working and WhatsApp,went down too the fact that all three, companies have been impacted suggest, that it's something right at the heart,of that social media giant that's gone, horribly wrong Facebook has servers, everywhere all over the world to ensure, that the service it delivers is,uh you know of course optimized and is,is a good service to the users so the, fact that it's Global suggests that it's,not a problem with its server system,it could well be a problem at the heart,of,the technological engine that runs all, those servers many within the tech, industry think it's a problem with the, domain name system that's effectively, the internet's address book and, something has been wiped at Facebook so,when you click an app or type the name, users aren't being sent anywhere yeah,it's been a bit of a nightmare that's,trying to find each other yeah let's go,back to text,so glad it's out and I think the world, would be a much better place if it,doesn't come back on it's been really, annoying obviously like I haven't been, able to contact my mom because she lives,in India and we're not like texting and, calling,WhatsApp is rapidly replacing texts and, regular calling particularly in the, developing world is a much cheaper way,to communicate and millions of small, companies here and around the globe, depend on Facebook to conduct their, entire business today's outage is huge,in scale but similar events have, happened before in July problems with, the domain name system meant that Airbnb,HSBC Bank and Playstation were among a,raft of sites to go down for hours but, today with the biggest social media, players down other platforms like Tick,Tock and Twitter are seizing their, moments in the Limelight Coletta Smith,BBC News, let's get more from North America, business correspondent Michelle Fleury, who's in Boston Michelle and this outage, has gone on for quite a few hours now it,well and truly has broken the internet, yeah I mean we think this outage has, gone on for what around five hours at,this point now look they happen from, some from time to time but typically, these problems are fixed very quickly so,announced it just long is highly unusual, and there are going to be many, frustrated people tonight in part, because billions of people use these,Services Facebook has nearly two billion, daily users Instagram I think has nearly,a billion the damage to the company was, reflected in the share price which, closed down nearly five percent but even,at the start of the day it was already, lower because Facebook has been hit by a,series of damning reports from a,whistleblower accusing the company of,prioritizing profits over misinformation, and the health and safety of teams now, that whistleblower Francis Haugen is due,to appear before lawmakers on Tuesday to,testify about Facebook's impact on teens,we've already heard one Senator compare,Facebook to Big tobacco in the way that, they draw in teenagers and cause them, harm so a bad week already for this, company, okay Michelle thank you Michelle Fleury, they're live in Boston

Facebook, Instagram and WhatsApp Down Again?? Here's Why!
Facebook, Instagram and WhatsApp Down Again?? Here's Why!
how is it going everybody you're,watching then about tag so facebook, whatsapp and instagram we're down again, and today,i'm gonna explain you why so we have, probably seen, read or even experienced this today, facebook messages, instagram and whatsapp were down they, were just not, working alongside with other facebook, services, this happened for about 45 minutes to an,hour,it depended a bit on where in the world, you were, and we had issues with connection so on,whatsapp mainly,we just couldn't connect we got the, image with the connecting, icon on top um sometimes you couldn't,send messages so you would send a,message and you would have the little, clock icon, and the messages wouldn't be sent and on,instagram we had we had weird issues, with,a 5xx server error, pretty weird right or the feed just, wouldn't work same thing with facebook, messages,we just got a message saying no network,or something, making a lot of people think that we had, connection issues with our smartphones, but it wasn't the case a lot of people, were just thinking, the internet was down the wi-fi the 4g,or something like that, but it wasn't the case facebook services, were down, once again the funny thing is that, whatsapp has been facing a weird, issue for about a week now of not, getting blue uh,if you use whatsapp you know what i mean, where you send a message and as soon as,that other person sees that messages, you get a blue tick and same thing with,an audio message as you would send an,audio message, and as soon as soon as that other person, listens to that messages, plays that audio message it would get, blue as well,we are not getting that blue indication,a lot of people are not getting that for, around a week and even now that the, issue is supposedly fixed,we're still not getting that blue, indication, but after all what actually happened, well, facebook didn't actually disclose the, whole thing, they just said it was a technical issue, and,it was fixed they used twitter to,communicate because their services were, offline,so they used twitter and they, communicated and they said it was fixed,it was done everything is fine but the, thing is this is not the first time this, has happened, actually it's been happening more and, more, often uh if you remember we had that, same, issue a few months ago and it was off it,was, completely offline it was completely, down like even, maine facebook was down for a few hours,it was about 45 minutes,so it was worse than that and back in,2019,less than two years ago we had the, biggest facebook outage, and it took more than a day for facebook,to actually, solve this problem so again, why what's actually going on so as you, know facebook, owns those other platforms those other, services and applications, facebook is the owner of whatsapp, instagram, and many other smaller companies as well, and as facebook has bigger and bigger, and those are the words from mark, zuckerberg himself,he says that the system is so massive, now, the platform is so massive now that even, small, changes can actually create, unpredictable, and big effects and this is probably, what's going on here,so those small changes can actually, bring down the entire, network so what happened now when a few, months ago,and two years ago are generally one, single thing, they run tests and those tests actually, knock down the network that's what, happens, most of the time so there are internal, tests there are internal changes, and testing and improvements but the, system is just so,huge that those effects can actually, escalate,to a huge big deal even if there are, small changes or just tests or things, like that, you got to think of like the domino, pieces like you knock over one,and then it creates a huge effect a huge, thing, and you may remember and you may think, okay but facebook has been around for, years for so many years and we've never, had so many outages like we're having, now, happening so and so often affecting so,many people and that's exactly why,as facebook gets bigger and bigger and, bigger and more and more complex,it just seems like they can't handle, this like they can't handle the, complexity,of this thing of this monopoly that, they're creating, and this is another very important thing, that i want to talk about in this video, and is the fact that monopolies have a,ton,of risks monopolies are extremely, dangerous, when we rely on one company to do pretty, much all of our communication, with whatsapp and instagram direct, messages, and facebook messages and also to do,pretty much all of our, entertainment as well when you're,talking about social media with, instagram and facebook,we get to a very very complicated spot, where we are relying a ton of our, online interaction on just one single, platform, and here i'm talking about communication, and entertainment, but think about businesses think about, people who depend who rely,on instagram because there are digital, influencers or maybe because they have, businesses and they use facebook ads,so when we just rely a lot of our online, life,on just one single platform i don't kn

Why Did Facebook, WhatsApp & Instagram Disappear From the Internet? | The Quint
bits of users worldwide were affected, when facebook instagram and whatsapp, were unavailable for six hours in what,is being dubbed as the biggest outrage,in internet history with down detector a,site that monitors reports of outages, across the internet logging over 10.6,million problem reports from all over, the globe, the global outrage knocked out every, corner of mark zuckerberg's tech empire, which meant that a significant portion,of 3.5 billion people who use facebook, services worldwide could not communicate, with friends and family, and businesses that use these services, were unable to reach their customers, while such outages are not uncommon the, duration and the scale of the outage, makes it significant, according to reports employees at,various facebook sites and offices were, unable to access internal communication, systems and tools to analyze the problem, and many were even locked out of the, offices as the access card stopped, working, the company says that the configuration, change to its routers caused the outage, without going much into the detail, facebook's explanation said this, disruption to traffic network had a,cascading effect on the way our data, centers communicate bringing our, services to a halt but what does this, mean the problem started around 9 pm ist, when millions worldwide was suddenly, unable to access any of facebook, services, according to experts the configuration, change to its routers likely caused a,major dns failure, dna stands for domain name system and it,is like an address book for the internet,it converts human readable language such,as www.facebook.com,to computer readable numeric ip,addresses, when the dns error occurred it made, every site on facebook's domain, unavailable, this also explains why services like, whatsapp and instagram were down, the all three services were essentially, off the internet as no one could locate, their online addresses or look them up,experts believe that the dns errors were,in turn caused when the water gateway, protocol routes were pulled from the, internet, border gateway protocol or bgb is the, system that the internet uses to connect, networks or ip addresses in the best and, quickest way possible,it is often referred to as the post, office of the internet,so the missing bgp rules combined with, the dns errors meant that facebook and,its services were effectively, unavailable to people how did it impact, people according to statista india has,the largest user base for facebook and,its platform with over 41 crore users, whatsapp which has 53 crore users in the, country has recently started taking,in-app payments a system used by some, businesses would depend entirely on the,app to connect with their customers, people don't really use facebook to,communicate or do business but also, depend on the website to login into, other devices and third-party,applications or websites, users on twitter complained about not, being able to log into their personal, household devices and other websites due,to the outage, the outlet at facebook was the biggest, relate, bigger than the last major outage in,2019 when a similar issue took the site, offline for over 24 hours, facebook ceo mark zuckerberg posted an,apology on monday night and said that, the company's services were back online, with facebook and its services down, social media users jumped to twitter to,share memes and posts about the outage, whatsapp's rival signal said on twitter, that it had gained millions of users on,monday, the outage resulted in a six billion, dollar personal loss for mark zuckerberg, and a close to five percent fall in the, company's talks, the outage revealed the huge role that, facebook plays in the infrastructure of,the internet and shows how crippling, such outages can be for its users

Facebook, WhatsApp and Instagram back after outage - BBC News
Facebook, WhatsApp and Instagram back after outage - BBC News
billions of users of facebook whatsapp, and instagram have finally had their, services restored after a global outage, which showcased just how dependent we,are on a company that is under intense, scrutiny the outage lasted for almost, six hours it was blamed on an internal, technical issue that not only affected, facebook services but reportedly also, employees work passes an email as well, mark zuckerberg apologized for the, disruption he said that his teams were, working as fast as possible to debug and, restore the platforms but the share, price closed down almost five percent in,new york the impact has been severe more,than,3.5 billion people around the world use,the three biggest social platforms owned,by facebook including many companies, that rely on them for advertising and, sales facebook you'll know is also used,to sign in to many other apps and, services so that caused this domino, effect when people could not log into, shopping websites or sign into their, smart tvs please speak to cyber security, expert scott holm who joins us now scott, just explain it to us simply what, happened,so we use something called bgp on the, internet the border gateway protocol, which is the map of the internet and big, companies like facebook will publish a,bgp route which tells us how to get to,them and yesterday afternoon here in the,uk,they stopped publishing those routes so,quite literally our devices did not know, how to connect to facebook at that time,is there any possibility here of foul, play scott,it's a possibility but from all of the, evidence that i've seen tracking this, incident so far i've not seen anything, that indicates foul play this looks like,a mistake that came from within facebook, themselves so inevitably, you know the question of cyber security, attacks comes up but i'm reasonably, confident that this may have just been,an accident, there were huge implications though for,the fact that the services were down for,so long are you surprised that it took,so long to fix or critical of the fact, that it took so long to fix, yeah it was very surprising you know, typically an outage like this might last, minutes or tens of minutes but not hours,i believe it appears again looking from, the outside that facebook actually had,to have staff go to the servers to fix, them because they couldn't even connect,to their own systems to fix them, remotely just like you and i couldn't,access facebook from the outside and we,think that's why this has taken them so,long to resolve and of course it shows, once again scott our dependence on this, particular platform for billions of,people, absolutely yeah businesses that use, facebook messenger signing with facebook,on other websites was broken and the, domino effect of so many people, repeatedly trying to access the service, places demand on internet providers as,well so we did see a very wide ranging, impact from this event so how damaging,do you think it will be ultimately then, for facebook scott i heard some people, from africa today saying you know it was, annoying for them but they can't imagine, using another service, yeah i think, for me the most direct impact was, whatsapp which i'm sure many of the, people use to communicate so frequently,i don't think this will have any impact,on an ongoing basis for facebook we saw, that share price impacted by this of,course businesses and users affected, during the outage everything seems to be,back online and working now though and,i'm hoping that there's no lasting, technical impact from this, scott thank you so much for joining us

hello and welcome my name is prasanjit, singh and today we are going to discuss, about the six hour long outage that, facebook had yesterday in fact this was, the, biggest outage since 2008 that facebook, camp has seen, and, facebook went down whatsapp went down, instagram went down and, other dependent websites also went down,i even heard that oculus was down so it,was a huge huge outage and, people have been speculating about the, reason behind this outage and those who, work for cloud or security or devops, site reliability everyone has been, thinking like what what was wrong and, most of them, have been, doing guessworks like it could be dns or,bgp because,if the outage is this long, then that could probably be the reason, and from, sources within facebook we have come to,know that,it was because of a,misconfiguration in the bgp, route so let's take a deep dive and, understand what bgp is and how it could, have caused an outage on something as,massive as facebook,so at a very basic level bgp stands for, border gateway protocol and it is one of,the systems that the internet uses to,get your traffic where it needs to go,and as quickly as possible, because there are tons of different, internet service providers backbone, routers and servers responsible for, your data making it to,say a website in this case facebook, there is a tons of different, routes your packets could end up taking, now bgp's job is to show them the way,and make sure it's the best route,so,let me explain it uh more in a more, generic fashion we know what dns is dns,is the address resolver so say you want,to go to facebook.com dns tells you well, this name facebook.com resolves to this, particular ip address so now you know, the address of the destination but you, know do not know how to reach there so,for example you're driving your car and,you know you have to drive to say, heathrow airport so you know the address, you know the destination but you need, google or apple maps to reach there so,you need to know which road to take, which is the shortest path and,how would you reach there in the least, time and which is the most effective way,to reach it reach your destination bgp,you can imagine it as a bunch of people, making and updating maps, that show you how to get to your, destination website,so in this case how to get to facebook, when it comes to bgp the internet is,broken into, big networks known as autonomous systems,or as,you can sort of imagine them as island, nations, they are networks that are controlled by,a single entity which could be internet, service provider like, comcast a company like facebook, like big companies can have their own, autonomous systems as well and,ass can be also, governed by major universities or even, governments so it would be extremely, difficult to build bridges connecting to,every island to all others so bgp is,responsible for telling you which, islands or autonomous systems you have,to go through to get to your destination,so,all these autonomous systems are, interlinked together using, this bgp protocol and that generates the,map of your, route, leading to your destination website so,that is how internet works actually, since the internet is always changing, these maps are dynamic so they have to,be updated and you don't want your, internet service provider to lead you to,an old road that is no longer, existent or no longer leads you to your, destination website,so,it's a massive undertaking you can say,to,map and remap and remap the internet all,the time so autonomous systems share the, maps with each other and then they come,up with the, latest data and the latest maps they, occasionally talk to their island, neighbors to see and copy any updates, they have made to their maps and update, their own databases as well so,using maps as a framework it is easy to,imagine how it would be,working so,it is also easy to imagine how things, could go wrong when updating the map, back to when the consumers, first got access to gps they were, always jokes about driving over a cliff,or walking, straight into a river and so on so,similarly things go wrong here, with bgp,map updates as,well so,that was a simplified version of what, bgp is,and, you can just imagine it as a map leading,to a destination and, there are, various island nations who maintain, their own maps of their own places and, they, use this protocol bgp to share the maps, together and they update their global, map using, this mechanism now, when it comes to a website things become,a bit trickier because website addresses, keep changing paths keep changing and so,the maps also keep changing, well now coming back to our problem what, happened with facebook facebook in fact, has its own uh bgp system, being a big big company it has its own, autonomous systems,so,that allows the company to make fast, incremental updates, and,so whenever there are any changes in,addresses or routes, facebook itself can updates its bgp data, and,so that gets propagated very quickly uh,within its own, data center, now cyber security reporter brian krebs, claims that
