hey guys today we're taking a look at,Instagram and social media in general,and the ways in which you can tailor,your content to achieve a more immersive,experience for your followers,it's 2019 and it's very easy to see that,a lot of social media is being consumed,as it has become an essential part of,our lives it's no secret that majority,of this media is consumed on our,smartphones because that is simply the,most convenient way your smartphone is,always with you wherever you go today,we're going to be taking a look at,Instagram in particular because well IG,is one of the biggest social media,networks out there and arguably one of,the best Instagram is unique in that it,is a purely visual sharing experience,that is entirely focused on just photos,and videos and as smartphones get taller,and taller it seems as those social,networks like Instagram are now pushing,for a very different viewing experience,from what we've grown accustomed to in,the last 20 or so years with white,screen content and video so what are the,best aspect ratios for Instagram I,personally never even worried about this,up until recently when I went through,some of my old posts and just outright,realize that some of the images and,videos just don't look immersive and I,catchy enough and to be honest this has,nothing to do with the content itself,but how it is presented to the audience,most of my old posts just weren't taking,advantage of all the space available on,the display if you take a look at some,of the biggest influences on the,platform you will notice that they've,all started tailoring their content so,that it suits Instagram the main two,reasons you want to crop and have your,images in the right aspect ratio is 2:1,use all the space available on the cell,phone display effectively and to by,doing that getting rid of any other,distractions that will be otherwise,viewable at the same time as your,content so in other words you want to,use all the space on the screen so that,the audience is fully immersed in your,content and only your content at any one,given time using the right aspect ratio,also means that your viewers aren't,forced to rotate their screens to,landscape just so they can view your,content for images this is very,straightforward and easy to do I suggest,starting to experiment with vertical,compositions whenever you're taking,photos and for landscape photos be,prepared to crop into a more squared,aspect ratio as opposed to a,horizontally rectangular one a very,basic rule that you want to follow is to,not post anything that is wider than it,is,all because you believin a lot of space,on the display the three main aspect,ratios that I've come to realize work,best on an 18 by 9 display which is,basically what every smartphone has now,are a perfect 1x1 square 2 by 3 and 4 by,5 now it's important to point out that,for any regular post Instagram will,always allow a tallest crop of up to 4,by 5 for any content whether it's videos,or stills the 1x1 square goes all the,way back to classic Instagram it gives,you equal space in both vertical and,horizontal directions and allows you to,get the most horizontal area out of the,3 4 by 5 gives you a slight bit more,vertical area and I think this is the,sweet spot that a lot of popular,Instagram is used because it's just tall,enough to utilize that display area but,also not quite as old-school as a square,aspect ratio which was ideal for the,smaller origin smartphone displays I,like to buy 3 a lot because it gives you,a good immersive experience on an 18 by,9 display basically filling up majority,of the screen now I have seen quite a,few creators doing 9 by 16 which is just,a widescreen video flip to its side and,personally I do not really like this,aspect ratio because it looks pretty,awkward it's so tall that you basically,feel like you're peeping through a,slightly open door there's a lot of,horizontal area lost here it's also very,hard to compose for such a shot because,even if you shoot vertically with a,portrait orientation you quickly realize,that you will have to cut out a lot of,the size of the image this doesn't quite,do it for me looks very strange and it's,hard to imagine any Content that can,take advantage of this except really,tall and slender object now it is,important to note that for still images,Instagram will max out at 4 by 5 so no,matter how tall your aspect ratio is,Instagram will automatically crop to 4,by 5 so 4 images 4 by 5 is the bread and,butter for IG and that's the crop you,should always have in mind when shooting,1 by 1 is also ok but not the best with,the introduction of IG TV videos can now,be posted in a variety of aspect ratios,including the super tall 9 by 16 and 2,by 3 mentioned earlier 9 by 16 will in,many cases fill up your screen or leave,very little free space however for me,this is not an aspect ratio I want to,use it works best for content that has,been shot vertically like if you're,shooting straight off your smartphone,but for videos that have

little,perplexed to that question because i,don't really do anything out of the,ordinary i don't really do anything,weird or special or unique there's no,secret sauce that pm uses to get sharp,shots so officially this is peter,mckinnon's hot tips for exporting photos,and videos to the hot trash that is,instagram one of the first things i do,is i always size the photo in lightroom,four by five now this is a lot easier if,you're shooting vertical already you,just go up to the drop down and select,4x5 and it's done for you but recently,in talking with friends brimhall,actually in one of those videos was,saying always shoot horizontal because,that aspect ratio is far more useful,than just ending up with a library full,of verticals and if you want to crop it,into a vertical you still can do that,you're going to go up here to the crop,tool and now you've got a 4x5 out of,your horizontal because you can always,use a horizontal for prints and framing,and desktop backgrounds or whatever,banners website whereas when you have a,vertical shot you want to make a,thumbnail you want to make something for,youtube or social media you just can't,you're stuck with the vertical so either,do both or if you had to choose,horizontal then make it vertical after,now i'm shooting raw already so that's,your first tip is shoot raw when i'm,done shooting and i'm down my edits,literally i click export i select,nothing i keep it on jpeg 100,dimensions are full size i don't click,any more drop downs at all i just hit,export and i save it to my desktop this,is where,maybe people might lose quality from,that point i airdrop it to my phone i,use mac so that is one of the greatest,features apple's ever made so if you,have a file on your desktop you just,right click select share airdrop and,then your phone's gonna pop up you click,your phone and it's instantly on your,camera roll from there i put it on,instagram like anyone else would now,that is literally all i am doing to get,the quality of photos that i have on my,account on instagram that is it that's,the whole process now before we go any,further let me just address the elephant,in the room because i know what's up there YouTube fam do you post,your videos to Instagram well if you do,did you know that you can post them at,different ratios as opposed to just the,square or sixteen by nine all that and,more covered in this video if this is,your first time here my name is Xavier,Mercedes and I like video editing things,so if you're into that kind of stuff go,ahead and hit that subscribe button,let's go ahead and get to the video the,first one that everybody is familiar,with is one by one,1080p by 1080p or if you shot it in 720p,or be 720p buy 720p or if you shot it in,4k 2160p by 2160p that's what everybody,knows the other aspect ratio that you,can use is sixteen by nine this is what,everybody's used to editing in and if,you can't fit what you need to in your,video into the square then sixteen by,nine works there's only a slight problem,with sixteen by nine when you're,scrolling through your feed sixteen by,nine only takes up a small amount of,real estate so there's a give-and-take,there in my experience I use sixteen by,nine for Instagram only when I don't,have time to find the framing for a,square post and if you're coming up with,content daily or you're under a big time,crunch sixteen by nine definitely works,when posting a video to Instagram that,isn't the aspect ratio of one by one all,you have to do is at the little corner,square and that will frame your video to,size and then you can post it this next,aspect ratio is perfect for vertical,video it's four by five or ten eighty by,thirteen fifty the best thing about this,aspect ratio is that it takes up the,most real estate in the Instagram feed,so if somebody's scrolling through,they're definitely going to see it,another good pro about this aspect ratio,is if the video was shot in a vertical,mode and it's just a talking head it's,great to use that extra space at the,bottom for subtitles or you could just,load your square video into the four by,five and use that last portion down at,the bottom just put your subtitles in,speaking of subtitles or captions would,you like to step up your Instagram game,by adding them to your videos check out,my video right here and I'll show you,how the last aspect ratio I've never,seen in Justin doing research for this,video I didn't even know that it was a,ratio bonus ratio is one point nine one,by one it is eighteen hundred by nine,forty five pixels why you would do a,video like this I don't know it's,skinnier than sixteen by nine,and it's so thin on the Instagram feed,but you can use it let's go ahead and,switch over to Instagram stories the,aspect ratio there is four vertical,video and it's nine by 16 which is not,1920 by 1080 but flip it around its 1080,by 1920 or if you shooting in 720p its,720 by 1280 or if you're shooting in 4k,it would be something like 20 160 by 38,40 now the really cool thing that,Instagram has done recently is that you,can hit the frame to size button on your,Instagram stories now you can have,something in sixteen by nine and then,actually have it just like shrink into,that vertical 9 by 16 which is really,cool or you could have a one by one or,any of those types of ratios just,fitting into your Instagram story let's,talk about all the other formatting,things so the length of your videos on a,Instagram post can be 60 seconds and,then on an Instagram story it can be a,total of 15 seconds as for the video,codec that I use its h.264 all the way,and for the file size that you're,looking to fit inside there doesn't seem,to be a max but one rule that I somewhat,like to follow is the gmail size limit,rule which is 25 megabytes when you're,sending a email through Gmail why is,this because whenever you're interacting,with a client or you have to send a,video file to yourself it's just easier,if you can attach that video and you,don't have to use something like Dropbox,or I don't know send it through an,iMessage or whatever you can just attach,it to your email within Gmail and then,send that so you can have a 60 second,video I just like to manipulate my,target bitrate to fit within the 25,megabits as for exporting your videos,and giving them to your phone what I,like to do is use airdrop,this doesn't degrade the quality of your,video file at all when getting it on to,your phone and then you can just post it,straight to Instagram from there so,there you guys have it,there's my quick and dirty explanation,of aspect ratios in formats and all,those other things within Instagram for,video to help you guys out and crush,that Instagram game if you liked this,video go ahead and throw it alike leave,me a comment down below on what you guys,are doing an Instagram maybe you leave,me your Instagram name and I can give,you a follow if you,they want to follow me I'm at junior,Mercedes on Instagram and hey if it was,really that helpful for you can you just,give me give me give me that sub,give me some subs please subs this is,xavier Mercedes and I'll see you guys on,the next one you can check out my most,recent video right

hi everybody fantastic see you all again,in this video what I want to do is talk,all about Instagram and how you can,upload your photos to Instagram and get,amazing results okay on with the five,tips is 5 simple steps or one the first,one is the most important and it's a bit,of a shocker really so it is all about,resizing your image to get the best,quality when you upload it to Instagram,so I do all my resizing and exporting in,Lightroom and what I do is I post my,image is usually a aspect ratio of 5 by,4 which is the tallest high you can get,on your feed on Instagram and I like,taking the most spaces a can where,somebody's scrolling through because,it's more like that they're gonna see my,photo so I it's a 5 by 4 aspect ratio,even if I've got a landscape shot like,this one here I'll crop it to 5 by 4 now,the maximum size that Instagram shows is,1080 by 1350 which is that 5 by 4 aspect,ratio but you don't want to upload it at,that resolution what you want to do is,upload it much bigger because if you,think about it when you upload it to,Instagram Instagram does two things it,resizes it as if it has to and it,compresses it so obviously with if you,upload something that's 1080 by 1350,which is what instagram recommends then,all it does is just compress that so,just makes it a smaller image file but,it doesn't change the dimensions if you,load something bigger which is what I'm,recommending you do then what it does is,it takes that image isn't it resizes it,and compress it at the same time I've,done loads of tests on this of all these,images you can see the results here and,guarantee you that it makes a big,difference if you load it a higher,resolution to begin with,what I recommend what I think works best,is actually the biggest wreckage,resolution that you can export at bought,you don't see a measurable difference,anything above 3000 pixels on the,longest edge and I'll explain how I,export it,sighs in the next tip but that's what,you need to do okay so let's go in and,have a look at the computer and I'll,show you how I export it from Lightroom,at that size so the first thing that you,need to do is go into export your your,image from lightroom the reason I'd like,doing it from Lightroom is I just have,more control over everything I watch it,picked a color space yet I'm still,dealing with the raw image and I'm only,making a decision now of what I'm going,to do with that raw image so you can see,I've got some presets here I'm not going,to go into detail of how I set up those,presets is that there's a video I did,hear about that but I've got shows my,Instagram one and basically that creates,something that's ideal for Instagram so,what it does is it exports it as JPEG s,RGB which is a cool especially want to,export it out for displaying things on,the web I'm limiting the file size to,three megabytes which is fine and then,I'm resizing it to three thousand five,hundred by three thousand five hundred,pixels,I said three thousand you want it three,thousand five hundred and then I used to,sharpen for screen,okay so I've exported it what's the next,step and that's getting it on my phone,so I can edit it again and then upload,it to Instagram so what I usually do is,because I Apple products is airdrop or,if I'm using the Google pixel I'll use,Android file transfer and once I've got,it on my phone then I edit it in,something called Snapseed which is a,really good editing tool and the reason,that edits it on my phone just did that,final edit on my phone is that the idea,that I've done in Lightroom is usually,the edit that I like for any printed,images and I know that's going to be,slightly different than what people,going to view on that screen so i open,it up in Snapseed and then what i do is,i play around with maybe the color and,summer just to try and give it a bit,more punch this gives me an idea of the,size it's gonna look like sometimes I,just zoom in a little bit like that so I,can see exactly what it's going to look,like when it's on Instagram and then I,think okay has that got enough punch to,it because obviously the printed image,is going to be much bigger than this but,on Instagram it's quite small so I then,go and do some editing so Snapseed is,great I mean again I'm not going to go,into this tool too much,things that I do quite a lot is I just,going to select certain areas so in this,case I'm just going to select this bit,here I'm going to increase the,brightness and increase the contrast so,just want to give that a bit more punch,and I'm going to reduce the structure,and then I might just try and give the,grasses a little bit more punch as well,so I'm just going to select the grasses,increase the brightness and contrast and,saturation and structure and then if I'm,happy with that then I will then go and,export it so I'll just go export and,save a copy usually and that saves a,copy of that file on my phone which I,can then upload to Instagram okay so,let's go to Instagram so going to,Instagram I click upload

so something big could be happening,instagram have just announced that they,are about to test a different way of,displaying images on the platform so in,a video which i'll show you in a second,adam aziri says that they are going to,test,tall images specifically nine by sixteen,so that is the same size that reels are,now or a standard video,if you turn it on its side vertical if,you will now this video raises quite a,few questions from me as a photographer,and i know that you're gonna be,wondering a few things as photographers,some exciting things and some worrying,but before i get into it let's just take,a look at that video,one step on that path we're starting to,experiment with this week which is a,test where both photos and videos take,up more of your screen we know the,future of video and the future of photos,are mobile first they are 9x16 they are,immersive and so what you'll see is us,testing out taller photos and taller,videos in your feed now in this video he,says something very odd he says the,future of video in the future of photos,on mobile first first of all i disagree,with that but then he continues by,saying the future of video in the future,of photos are 9 by 16 which from a,photography standpoint is a very strange,thing to say i don't really know anybody,that intentionally crops their photos to,a 9x16 unless it's being used on a tv,screen turned on its side or something,similar to that so to say that the,future of photos is 9x16 so vertical,is very strange i think i've probably,taken that out of context because to me,a photo is from a camera whereas he's,probably talking about it as in the,photo on instagram which could just be a,snap from a phone but he's saying from,his point of view the future of photos,is 9x16,it's reasonable to assume,that this new aspect ratio that they're,talking about could be forced or at,least that the ui will be optimized for,9x16,now sidenote right now many,photographers shoot portrait like this,and they optimize it by cropping four by,five that is the biggest vertical crop,that you can have on instagram,this is something that many,photographers do now because that is the,biggest photo you can possibly have on,instagram so if there is an aspect ratio,which gives you that people will most,likely do that so this leads me to think,what happens when you upload a landscape,photo does this mean that we are,essentially killing off the landscape,posts if the future is nine by 16 so,vertical that is now you don't see many,of them but people do still post,landscape for good reason because,sometimes that is the best way for you,to crop your photo from a creative point,of view now i'd be very interested to,see whether the ui of reels carries over,to photos because that's what he's kind,of implying and that will really change,the way that actual photographers post,their images now assuming all of that is,true the next question for me is what,does this mean for the grid i think i,know what this means but right now if,you post a 4x5 so the biggest portrait,image you can you can post now that is,slightly bigger than the square which,means when you crop them square for the,grid they don't really suffer too much,but cropping a 9 by 16 to a square will,pretty much in most cases ruin the image,because people will compose the shot for,9x16 maybe they'll have a portrait of,someone at the top they will crop it,into the square and completely ruin the,photo on the grid,which probably won't matter because of,what i think is coming i think it's very,possible that we will see that the reels,grid,also known as the tick tock grid will,probably become the main grid if they're,unifying photos and videos into this,9x16 so everything is going to be the,same size it makes sense for the grid,and the thumbnail to also be that size,so you see everything just like you do,on tiktok so what does this mean for the,home screen you know we have solid,evidence here in the video he says we're,moving instagram to a place where video,is a bigger part of the home experience,you see right now in terms of user,experience reels have been crafted to,fit the old feed they're secondary from,a user experience point of view now i,think by saying that video is going to,become a bigger part of the home,experience means that the home,experience is going to be designed,around reels or videos,and photos are being changed to fit that,new design and that again adds weight to,my thoughts that maybe they're going to,force the 9x16,now just quickly on what i'm saying are,they going to force it,stories,are not forced you can have any kind of,shape of image in stories but most,people fill the space and that's what,i'm talking about when they say force,from a user experience point of view it,makes you want to post photos in a,certain way another interesting thing,that he said is that they are more,immersive you know they're going for a,more immersive experience i think so what are the best video dimensions,for instagram because it's a bit of a,minefield out there and there's lots to,choose from so in this video i'm going,to walk you through all the different,options very confusing,there's a lot to choose from you've got,your main feed instagram stories igtv,what video dimension works best where,well in this video we're going to be,covering all the dimensions across the,entire platform so that you can choose,the dimension that works best for you,and start creating better content,okay so let's start off with your main,feed on instagram what dimensions can,you upload when it comes to video well a,really popular one is 16 9 or 1920 by,1080. okay so let's just talk a little,bit more about this 16 9 widescreen,ratio and why it's so popular now the,reason that a lot of videos are in this,dimension the same as the dimension that,you're watching here in this video is,that generally this is how your camera,will shoot whether you're filming on a,mobile phone or a more professional,camera this 16 9 wide screen ratio is,generally how you will record your,footage so the natural tendency is to,shoot in that dimension and then upload,in that dimension now another reason,that this dimension is so popular is,that it allows you to tell a better,story get more information across,because you've got,lots of screen to play with now there is,a downside when it comes to shooting and,uploading this 16 9 ratio to instagram,and the big downside is that when it,comes to screen size and how much of the,screen that video is going to fill up in,comparison to other video dimensions,that instagram have to offer you're,going to be filling up the least amount,of your screen so when people are,scrolling through their feed your video,isn't going to look as big in comparison,to other videos so how else can we,increase,our video size on the main feed of,instagram well another really good,dimension is square or one by one or,1080 by 1080. now for a number of years,the square format was the only video,dimension that instagram offered so,everybody's video was square but now we,do have different options now let's just,talk about one of the downsides to this,square format and this is a problem that,i come across almost on a weekly basis,when it comes to editing footage and,that is that,normally footage as i've mentioned is,shot in the 16 9 wide screen ratio but,then people are looking to upload their,video in a square format on instagram,and the big problem with this of course,is that when you take a 16 9 dimension,video and upload it square ultimately,you're chopping off either side of that,image so you're losing a lot of,information,equally if you've shot that video with,that 16 9 dimension in mind you would,have framed all of your shots,with that dimension in mind so then when,you upload it into that square dimension,all of your framing all of your,composition has been ruined and,sometimes this isn't a problem maybe,you've got a talking head video just,like this one here in which case losing,the left and right hand side of that,video isn't a big deal but if you've,gone out and you've shot some kind of,cinematic sequence in a nice widescreen,ratio and then you upload it in a square,dimension you're going to be chopping,off either side of that video and you're,framing your composition it's all going,to be off and it's just not going to,look right so you may have to re-edit,your videos and upload them in this,square format but by far the best way of,doing this if you can is to shoot with,your end dimension in mind so look if,you know that you're going to be,uploading a square video to instagram,then try and shoot using that square,format if you've got grids on your,camera enable them this will help you to,frame and compose your shot better and,this will ultimately mean you're not,going to be sacrificing the left and,right hand side of your image when it,comes to uploading this video to,instagram but how can we make our videos,even bigger on instagram how can we fill,up the most amount of screen possible,well fast becoming my favorite video,dimension on instagram is four by five,this is going to fill up the most amount,of screen possible when it comes to your,video many of the big creators are using,this dimension for exactly that reason,it makes your videos stand out but what,are the downsides to uploading in this,four by five ratio well again look if,you've shot your footage in 16 9,widescreen but you're now trying to,upload a 4x5 video you're going to be,chopping off the left and right hand,side of that video so always try to make,sure if you can to shoot with your final,dimension in mind and look if you need,any tips on framing and hello everyone and welcome to this video,today i'm going to be showing you how to,post,full-size images on your instagram,account,so there is absolutely nothing more,frustrating than,going to post an instagram photo and it,getting completely cut off and,cropped here in a square there is the,regular way,of just sort of zooming out and hoping,that your picture fits in this,larger format but i'm going to show you,the exact dimensions you need in order,to post on,instagram plus i'm going to show you a,workaround,so that you can post a full size image,on your instagram account,don't forget to give me a thumbs up,below if this video is helpful for you,and please don't forget to subscribe so,that you never miss a new video from us,so let's take this picture here for,example it is,a longer photo of this girl here looking,out onto the beach,and you can see that it doesn't quite,fit in this square,layout a lot of your photos will look,really cool,in a square version but sometimes you,really want to post that full size,image the first thing to always try is,pressing these arrows here,on the side now that's going to line,this up as centered as it possibly can,leaving you these random looking borders,on the side,that won't actually be posted when you,post if we follow this through here,we can go next next and share and you'll,see that once this has been posted,it is the full long length of this photo,without those borders on the side,so you can always press those arrows,either side but what happens if your,photo is actually,longer than this layout well let's jump,across to our photo library,and now that we're here in my photo,library if we were to go into this photo,here,we can pre-crop it so that it is exactly,laid out the right way,for an instagram post now at the time of,posting this video,instagram only let photos be posted that,are at a four to five ratio,or an eight to ten if you are using an,ios device same ratio it's just laid out,a little bit differently,you can go up and press edit on a photo,and across the bottom here you can press,crop now it's going to automatically,kind of crop it freehandedly if you just,do any old,any old corner and you just pull that in,but if you want to make sure that it's,the right dimensions,up the top here these uh squares inside,of each other are going to give you,the exact dimensions down here so if you,scroll across,you'll see that there's the square one,by default and you can move your image,around,inside of that square but if you want to,go something a little bit longer,eight by ten remember is the same as,four to five which is the maximum amount,that instagram will allow without,borders,and that lets us choose exactly which,parts of this photo,will fit inside this 4x5 so that we,are okay with our cropping you can press,done and then now this has been cropped,exactly for,instagram so if we were to post this we,wouldn't get anything missing from the,top or bottom,if your image is even taller than that,and see this one here is far far taller,than,a four by five if i go to edit and i,press crop,up to those boxes at the top and i hit,eight by ten you can see that we're,actually missing a fair bit of this,image there's gray up the top,and more of the cat down the bottom so,we either miss some of the gray empty,space,or we missed the bottom of this cat,picture if we were to zoom out here,it sort of just keeps snapping back to,that four by five layout,the workaround for this is by using a,third-party app and i'm going to show,you the one i have been using,it's this one here called square fit,when you go into square fit,it's going to ask if you want to upgrade,to a premium account but you do get,access to this,for a couple of days so i'm going to,quit that,and add a new picture and go to my,library and bring in that tall cat that,we were just,using together now the benefit of this,app,and there are there are a few other apps,that also do this so if this one is not,accessible to you,have a look at some sort of clipping app,that will help you resize,for instagram at the bottom here i can,choose whether i want this to be a,square,if i wanted to have borders around the,outside fully so that we get the entire,image,or if i only want the borders on the,left and right,you can choose the color of the border,behind it so that it can either suit,your instagram layout here some people,prefer to have some colors if you use,dark mode black might be the way to go,or if you're using light mode like me,you can absolutely go and choose white,and that will blend straight,back into your photos and you will be,able to,post that so i've saved that to my,camera roll,back over i go to instagram,now when i go to post this i get the,full size of my cat,and i can press next next and share of,course you will add some titles to this,some captions and hashtags but now we,get the full,size of our cat there included the,borders for us,so that we don't have to lose any of our,image,you
