facebook stock price has fallen by over,50,in only seven months what's going on,well let's begin by looking at the day,on which this price decline began the,second of february 2022 when the parent,company of facebook and instagram lost,230 billion dollars of value in less,than 24 hours just to give you an idea,about how much money 230 billion dollars,is the total gdp of new zealand being,the value of every single product or,service produced by the entire country,for the whole year was only 210 billion,which is less than what facebook lost in,a day so what went wrong on this fateful,day in february when meta set the record,for the highest one-day value decline in,stock market history to put it simply,this was the day on which facebook,revealed to the public that both their,site usage and revenue has been,declining shown on screen is a graph,displaying the amount of daily active,facebook users over the last 10 years,for every quarter besides the first,three months of the pandemic growth in,the facebook user base was almost,strangely consistent however if we take,a look at late 2021 for the first time,in the website's history user growth,flattened off substantially when looking,at the graph for monthly facebook users,as opposed to daily facebook users the,data is similar only 0.1 growth from,october to january 0.8 from january to,april and then even a decline of 0.07,percent from april to july surprisingly,or perhaps unsurprisingly instagram,follows a similar trend to facebook,nothing but growth from 2015 until 2021,at which point stagnation hits why well,the first reason behind facebook and,instagram's user growth stagnation is,somewhat of an impressive problem,they're battling with human population,limits and have run out of new countries,to expand into of the 8 billion people,on earth 3 billion log into facebook at,least once a month leaving 5 billion,people that don't use the service,regularly of these 5 billion remaining,1.7 billion living countries such as,china iran and russia where facebook and,instagram have been banned by the,government leaving only 3.3 billion who,aren't using the service according to an,article written by the new york times,another 3 billion do not use the,internet at home or on their phones and,in some of the world's most populated,countries including pakistan bangladesh,and nigeria a majority of people are not,online if you then factor in another 15,of the global population who are under,the age of 10 making them too young to,use social media at all then pile on the,hordes of people who have made a,deliberate effort to boycott social,media altogether facebook and,instagram's problem becomes obvious,they're running out of humans in an,article written by time titled inside,facebook's plan to wire the world it,explains how zuckerberg is working to,literally provide the entire third world,with the internet because it's now the,only way that meta can reach new people,connecting the entire world wouldn't,actually literally be possible unless,everybody in the world were on the,internet so zuckerberg has decided to,make sure everybody is this sounds like,the kind of thing you say you're gonna,do but never actually do but zuckerberg,is doing it he is in chandori today on a,campaign to make sure that actually,literally every single human being on,earth has an internet connection we,really want to get the next billion,people online and if we can play a role,then that's something that i personally,care a lot about is it selfish for,zuckerberg to connect the entire world,to the internet just so he can get more,people onto facebook and instagram or is,it a win-win situation for everyone,that's an ethical conundrum for you to,consider however this might not even be,the main problem as meta isn't only,running out of new people to introduce,the services to but those who are,currently active on the services are,departing in droves somewhat hilariously,facebook has lost 1 or 30 million of its,users to that pesky little thing known,as death and with 12.1 percent of,facebook's user base being over the age,of 55 this number will inevitably,increase as time progresses yet facebook,should probably be less worried about,the boomers and a little more concerned,about the zoomers as facebook's biggest,loss in user count stems from the,younger generation back in 2018 facebook,demographics began to follow a very,interesting trend there was an increase,in users from the older generation,little change from those in their middle,age and a pretty substantial loss in,users from those under the age of 25.,one year later in 2019 another piece of,data was published supporting a similar,trend only to a more severe degree there,was a slight increase from the oldies,barely any change for the middle age,crowd and again a massive 17 decline in,only two years for those using facebook,under the age of 34. after seeing this,data it's no social media giant facebook and its,instagram and whatsapp services have,been hit by widespread outages facebook,says it's aware some people are having,trouble accessing the platforms but,hasn't said what's behind the problem,well let's speak to ian share about this,he's the editor at large at the consumer,tech site cnet and he's joining us,from maryland in the u.s very good to,have you with us,tell us about what this all is about i,mean facebook says some users but this,looks like a global outage how,widespread is it,well,it's hard to tell i will say that when,we're talking about facebook more than,half the world's online population is,using it every month so you know a few,users can be a lot of users but this is,this is a signif look these these,outages happen from time to time right,sometimes they are the result of bad,behavior hacks or something other times,it's someone who pushed the wrong button,and this time it seems like it may have,been not a bad thing it may have been,someone pushed the wrong button or some,computer is misconfigured and that'll,get fixed at some point but this has,been going on for over an hour now which,is long yeah,it is long and look these things tend to,be unusual because facebook in,particular really prides itself on,working really well you know over the,last i'd say five ten years we've seen,google apple facebook amazon all of them,have been relatively stable before that,it was pretty it was pretty normal for,the internet to kind of go in and out,and some websites not to work,you can look up the twitter fail whale,if you remember that period of internet,history so you know this stuff did,happen but it is unusual more so now and,so yeah having it out for an hour is,definitely uh noteworthy,and this is coming in a day after a,whistleblower revealed that the company,facebook prioritized profit over public,good,and we know that political pressure has,been building on the company we're not,speculating of course here whether,there's a link between that and what's,happening today but i'm wondering you,know with all this bad publicity right,now for facebook and this political,pressure can can the company withstand,all this bad pressure and bad publicity,what do they have to do to change things,around,yeah i mean look i think that they are,under a really a lot of pressure from,all over the place right not just,their critics and people like me in,silicon valley but also you've got the,regulators in washington all over the,world and look it's very clear that,facebook needs to really reckon with,what they have done,both in terms of actually allowing bad,behavior to continue happening on their,platform and how they haven't been,honest and forthright with you and me,and everybody else about how bad the,situation is and that that is a really,big problem how bad is the situation,i mean it's very clear that uh that,harassment and uh the spread of,disinformation undermining democracy all,these things have been happening on a,wider scale than facebook has told us,about we don't have access to any data,that actually tells us all we have are,little slivers of information right so,it is a big big problem and the company,has shown internally that they know that,right,that's what the whistleblower of course,revealed uh in um,in reports that we we read about,yesterday you know when you see all this,in,you wonder of course,if you know one company facebook owning,multiple major online platforms is a,good idea what can regulators do about,this,yeah i mean look there's been efforts,inside of washington to talk about,whether or not facebook should be forced,to be broken up you may remember that 20,years ago that conversation was,happening around microsoft and the way,that turned out was that even though,microsoft was found to be a monopoly all,the government did was slap it on the,wrist and allow it to continue being,microsoft so i don't know exactly how,far the us government's going to be,willing to go here but i am curious to,see whether this appetite for reigning,in the tech industry will be any,different from what it was a couple of,decades ago,thank you so much for talking to us,about this ian share from cnet joining,us there from maryland thank you for,your time,thank you

you know to get there and to feel as,confident as I did and to feel as locked,in as I did,um,yeah I will,I will never forget that feeling,of that first call out getting called to,me not being in it,I was more surprised about not being in,it this year than I was last year being,in it and uh,you know that was that was tough on,stage being that you just got to keep it,together and uh you know push it down,and process it after but that was a,you know one of the biggest shocks I'd,ever endured in my life and it was in,front of you know God knows how many,thousands of people so that was a that,was something,three weeks post Olympia as of today in,like T-minus like five hours and I have,been off social media I haven't been,shooting YouTube videos I have been,seeing my family and friends and keeping,to myself because,it shouldn't come as a surprise to any,of y'all by now but uh I did not do what,I was planning on doing at the Olympia,this year,um,this is gonna be the first time I kind,of unpacked that so wanted to share it,with you all who have supported me over,the years as much as you'll have first,before it went anywhere else so um,yeah leading into the Olympia this year,um,you know I feel like we added a lot of,awesome size where it needed to go you,know headed into the show,um,I feel like I made a couple mistakes and,you know there were Collective mistakes,me and Ben being our first prep together,and I say mistake but uh,you know this Olympia has really made me,kind of like focus in on,you know what it means to fail and you,know what you do in the wake of that,failure and uh,you know you can call them mistakes but,uh I've chosen to call them lessons this,year,um,you know we learned some lessons,um it like six seven weeks out and then,we learned some lessons the last five,weeks of uh,the prep this year you know leading into,the peak so you know if we make them,again their mistakes this year they were,lessons,um,and you know speaking of the mindset,that we have you know coming out of that,um,you know I very much so have you know,decided to treat it it was a slingshot,year for me,um I got pulled back so we can shoot,forward this year,um you know in addition to that you know,placing seventh uh sliding from fourth I,am no longer qualified uh for the,Olympia this year so I will actually be,competing in not one but two shows for,sure,um outside of the Olympia this year,regardless if I win the first one which,I am going to do,um,fact of the matter is I got to figure my,Peak out and we have a really good idea,of where we went wrong in those final,five days we have a really good idea of,what we need to do and you know like the,the weeks out you know whether between,starting the prep and you know getting,out ahead moving a little faster and,then,you know really having two good hard,pushes so we're not stuck um you know,having to hammer me those last four,weeks five weeks,so you know all in all,um,you know I'm really confident heading,into this year and you know in addition,to that confidence headed into this year,I am,you know I'm putting that pissed,off man,um you know I uh,you know I put this timer up in my gym,and I worked every day for you know 300,and I think it was 42 days or something,like that from last year's Olympia to,this Olympia and uh,you know I came up short you know plain,and simple I came up short,um of what I wanted to do,but at the end of the day and this is,something that I've always really,preached throughout all my preps is keep,your peace of mind and that was uh you,know at the end of the day something I,did this prep I kept my peace of mind,from the standpoint that I could not,have done anything more if I wanted to,you know did everything that was asked,to me followed the plan to a t,um you know truly truly truly reached a,uh a new level of you know I hate using,the word suffering because it sounds,like we're like doing this hardcore,thing but you know reached a whole new,level of you know what I'm able to,endure and what I'm able to push myself,through this prep whenever I needed to,speed things up so you know armed with,that and armed with the lessons that we,are taking out of this Olympia prep,I'm excited for this year man you know a,lot of people are you know get down on,themselves after doesn't go how,it's supposed to and you know that's,at the end of the day how you respond to,adversity is you know what really makes,you so yeah I will,I will never forget that feeling,of that first call out getting called to,me not being in it and it was in front,of again later so here I am,freaking out instagrams a pretty big,part of my business so I start freaking,out and sorry I google the issue and,then because it hadn't been widespread,yet how to solve it so they told me that,you could try restarting your phone,tried that they said you can close the,app and reopen it did that no success,and then the third thing they said was,you can delete the app and then,redownload it so I did that but in doing,that it kicked me out of my pages so,when I tried to log back in I,experienced I'm doing it right now I'm,trying again an error message I will put,this error message on the screen right,here that is what I've been experiencing,for the past few hours I experienced,this pretty early in the day,these are like I said this vertical,which I links down below was posted,literally less than half an hour ago so,these are issues are still being,experienced now so if your Instagram,Facebook whatsapp is being all wonky,that's why they're experiencing issues,from that and I want to talk more about,from a strategic perspective so we have,become so reliant on Instagram and,Facebook that gotcha shows us the,importance of diversification so people,when they're saying with Twitter's dead,or they're not open to trying different,social media platforms or different,venues to get your name out there and,build your personal brand and your,business's brand this should prove,reason to diversify your presence across,different platforms because things like,this do happen Facebook or Instagram,could literally be gone tomorrow,like right now people are losing their,mind if their sole connection to their,audience is through Instagram and that's,the case with a huge ton of people it's,just become commonly accepted that,Instagram is the place to be but things,like this happen all the time and you,got to think what would you do if,Instagram never came back and I'm sure a,lot of you would be in a pretty bad,situation so that's why leveraging all,these different platforms is very very,important that's why I have my youtube,channel that's why on my podcast you,never want to be solely invested in one,platform so relax this is probably gonna,be remedied you're probably gonna be,alright everything should be fine I,can't guarantee anything but I'll let,you know in a comming video I want to,get this out quickly to you guys try to,ease your mind
